I bought this on a whim, remembering that someone I worked with said it was great. Now 1) it is excellent 2) one of the greatest ever made? With all of the Miyazaki films made since this film came out, I would say it is the best of the “Ironman” type of action films. Art wise, beautiful.

    About characterization.
These films aren't really designed to be stand-alones, the audiences back then were familiar with the manga running Shonen Sunday or the TV anime, whichever.

I quite often watch it in the fall, good fall movie. I've always loved the sights and sounds as the military moves into the city...and then the snow starts to fall. Goto is probably my favourite character in anime and I actually like the English dub as subdued as it is even though I watched all of the tv episodes in Japanese.

Pet labor to the movie is my favorite of the entire Patlabor franchise. I own the collectors edition DVDs of the two movies. I do want to eventually upgrade to the Blu-ray, but I still plan on keeping my DVDs.

To fully enjoy this movie, you have to do a lot of homework. I think the following TH-cam video is the shortest path to do that: th-cam.com/video/ybLKmO5Kq5A/w-d-xo.html.
As for the third act, it might help to know that the target of the helicopter attack are communication/broadcast antennas and bridges -- something that connects people. Also the landfills where the final battle takes place are euphemistically referred to as 夢の島 (Dream Islands) to avoid looking at the fact that they are made up of the garbage that life in Tokyo has produced -- a fun fact that further reinforces the director's take on the peace in the Cold War.

I saw this movie in a theater that was a minute's walk from where the airship crashed in the movie. When I came out of the theater, I remember that the city looked completely different.
