I could listen to James Lavelle talking about anything and everything that interests him... for hours! He's an encyclopaedic bundle of enthusiasm. His music has taught me so much about everyone else's music for 25 years now, and I owe him a lot.
You can thank DJ Shadow for that. Levelle had very little involvement in that album. All the songs are written and produced entirely by DJ Shadow. Lavelle was more like the creative director and consultant, being that he was the founder of the label for that album, Mo'Wax. He also hired all the guests and features on the album.
"James Lavelle was one of these guys who was a nerd but managed to turn it into cool. I think of him as a breakbeat version of Quentin Tarantino. A guy who built a whole aesthetic around nerd knowledge, the kind of guy who has a huge collection of Star Wars memorabilia and vintage sneakers. The Mo’ Wax records were very stylized and well-packaged." - Simon Reynolds
I love the production and storytelling of this video. I knew of Lavelle mostly from UNKLE, but how vividly he describes both music and film is equally lovely.
James Lavelle was a hero of mine in the 90s as a teen. I meet him once at Bar Rhumba when Shadow was spinning soul 45s. He was the coolest. 20 years or so on, Lavelle remains a true gent with a real head for knowledge and sound that's so evident in this video. What a G.
He seemed really relaxed and able to talk , reference shadow with respect and pride, totally cool with it all and happy with where he is at the moment, sure, he had it all , but he paid the price and reinvented himself.man from mo wax!!
A telling (see also; warts’n’all) doco was released about James a while back called ‘The Man From MoWax’. Seek it out. Well worth your time. Fascinating geeza.
Its incredible. I've been listening Unkle (and Dj Shadow) all my adult life and I think it's the type of music that never ages. His tracks and records sound as great today as they did during release. Somehow I never got interested in James private life. And now here it is, first interview i see and he mentions his favourite movie (in my Top 3), Watchmen (i own original printing) and od course Dj Shadow. How amazing is that?
I could talk about tons of things James has done for culture but I just want to thank him for releasing dr octagon on mo wax for the English market !!!! The triple vinyl packaging and artwork is pure beauty!!!!
James Lavelle is one of the greats. Genius is an understatement. Listen to Unklesounds: Edit music for a film, or Do androids dream of electric beats. Call me back when your mind gets un-blown.
James Lavelle may never get the praise he truly deserves. The most underrated ear in music, art collector, track selekta as a DJ, and head of UNKLE, pure underground bliss.
Ending with Endtroducing. Perfect. You rock James. I Miss Mo'Wax! So glad I have original pressings of Endtroduing and Preemptive Strike. Which I bought from Amoeba Berkeley I might add.
It was this TH-cam video that made wanna watch Heat (1995) although i wouldn't see the movie yet until several months later after this video uploaded, and i loved the movie.
Very underrated artist, I've been listening to War Stories a ton at work lately, aged very well from 2007 and of course Psyence Fiction and "Heaven" with Gavin are awesome too!
James lavelle doesn’t get the respect he deserves, great dvd by the way.I remember when my wife Rebecca left me,I wasn’t happy.Good work amoeba.Stay strong.
cameron mc vey (ncherry's husband) co-wrote and produced a lot of her music as well as some early massive attack AND the sugababes' overload which I think is a really really great track
Yes thief is a great film. Another I'd mention is collateral. I'm still waiting on Mann to put out another epic. Supposedly they're working on a heat sequel/prequel.
I'm guessing many of those picks are also based somewhere in his mind about how he could dice them into his music. Minds like his are always thinking creatively and big picture. It's fascinating to watch what's probably going through his mind as he speaks.

same here.
same here, you said it all
The UNKLE album _Psyence Fiction_ is bloody brilliant. I miss Mo' Wax Records something fierce.
Cal Wiggums: So many killer good trax on that album -- especially the instrumentals or non-vocal sound-collages!
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown That secret track on the CD with the VU sample is cool. Press play & hold down index
still cannot wait for the boxset reissue of psyence fiction

@@informationnotfound The Elba show Hijack features a song off that as its theme.

Chills every time I hear the opening beats of Entroducing... Absolutely one of the best albums ever released, and a desert island disc, no doubt.
Wow, this legend opens up with "Heat" right off the bat. Of course.
Greatest film ever made. Bar none.
Thanks for THX1138 very cool film ...
Unkle 'Psyence Fiction' is hands down one of the greatest albums of all time, Period ( and it's in my personal Top 5 favs )
What are the other four?
I’d put the Road Part 1 up there too 😎
I'm in the middle of an UNKLE retrospective and came across this.
Lavelle is so eloquent about his influences and loves. Brilliant episode.
I love the production and storytelling of this video. I knew of Lavelle mostly from UNKLE, but how vividly he describes both music and film is equally lovely.
I love how he goes into all the different tangents with respect to Neneh Cherry.
My favorite episode.
His comments on Watchmen were spot on.
MINE TOO MAN

James Lavelle, is just legend man. I love his work, he always brings quality and a uniqueness to his work.

hey i listened to it round 10 years ago. it REALLY changed my music perseption
James Lavelle may never get the praise he truly deserves. The most underrated ear in music, art collector, track selekta as a DJ, and head of UNKLE, pure underground bliss.
What a great interview and expertly edited. 👏👏
God Bless to James Lavelle everytime...

Heat Rules
Midnight in a Perfect World is my favorite song ever.
It was this TH-cam video that made wanna watch Heat (1995) although i wouldn't see the movie yet until several months later after this video uploaded, and i loved the movie.
Finally someone worth watching again, it's been a while. Thanks Amoeba.
Dude could be a film reviewer
Not sure when that piece was recorded ....Basquiat - Rage To Riches on DVD can be bought in England . Also its been on TV a few times on the BBC .
Amazing and very different choices. I love Unkle
great pics. some of Lavelle's productions are personally important to my life.
Finalmente ENDTRODUCING... 😍😍😍😍😍
De La Soul 😍😍😍😍
The Road Part 1 is one of the most brilliant albums of our time
Loved Jamesy since the Rabbit in your Headlights days... absolutely brilliant mind on that boy.
After tomorrow he will play here in Budapest… can’t wait
Just hearing him say shit like “ me and shadow where just driving down the road” is crazy to me cheers James you the man!
UNKLE "Never, Never, Land" - a masterpiece
Thank you for this one, Amoeba!
Solid all the way through. Choice cuts and no ego stance. Love!!!
Great minds think alike. Heat is a masterpiece!!!!! Michael Mann is the man!
Unkle stirs my soul and ❤
R.I.P. Gavin Clark
Very underrated artist, I've been listening to War Stories a ton at work lately, aged very well from 2007 and of course Psyence Fiction and "Heaven" with Gavin are awesome too!

Some Okie Dude Three of my favorite things
@@brownyuio Same here chief.
One of the best videos yet!
Another great one.
English folks romanticize Los Angeles through Michael Mann films...that Psyence Fiction record was fire back in the day.
That maze is sweet.. Thanks
Bless you and fair play
I'm lucky to see him performed live
I think he's a nice guy. Could you do an episode with Jim Jarmusch?
That would be excellent
woah - legend, THX1138 is one of my fave films. Not that many people love it - nice 👍👍
Midnight in a perfect world got me into techno and brown paper bag got me into drum & bass
Great episode.
More people should see this
Yes! I am in love with DJ Shadow!!💛
Your War Stories album. I mean..How the f.. If I had to listen to only 3 albums for the rest of my life, it would be one of them. Pure genius.
I love James
Oh my god, he's really cool. His influencies come from everything
Spot on about the times we live in.
I pretty much just bought every one of these albums that I didn’t already have.
He just blew my mind. I never knew "Buffalo Stance" was a redo or that her Neneh Cherry's husband put out a record.
cameron mc vey (ncherry's husband) co-wrote and produced a lot of her music as well as some early massive attack AND the sugababes' overload which I think is a really really great track
awesome, each record has a story for him.
Yep. Killed it.
I want James Lavelle to tell me stories of music❤️
Dante Spinotti was the director of photography on "Heat" -- but agree that it is Michael Mann's finest film, just head of "Thief."
Yes thief is a great film. Another I'd mention is collateral. I'm still waiting on Mann to put out another epic. Supposedly they're working on a heat sequel/prequel.
legend
hes soooo coooool
Tremendous choices 👍
What a legend. I'd sacrifice a nut to see an episode with Shadow or Run The Jewels.
You are not alone.
A need one hour of this. why 10 min?
Love it !
Such an underrated musician
WHY ISN'T SOMEONE ASKING ME IF I BUY VINYL
Do you buy vinyl? *DO DO DO DOO DO DO TEE DO DEE*
HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY DON'T ASK ME!?!?!?
Especially in that super douchey effeminate hipster voice.
because vinyl sucks
Derek January..what's in your bag?
DJ SHADOW & JAMES LAVELLE.... DRUMS OF DEATH Y'ALL.....
Yay finally James !
War Stories is exceptional.
*mo' wax forevah!*
God I love Unkle
Maybe my favorite episode of WIMB.
Excellent!
BEST YET.
What’s the song at 0:40
Moby - God moving over the face of the waters
Looking for the rain is the last song right?
What movie is shown when he is talking about technicolor?
Singin' In The Rain
@@gulleyjimson Much appreciated :)
Well I guess I'll watch Heat tonight. Been a while.
Chris Grady “the action is the juice”
great taste; honest choice.
Not a huge fan of most his music picks, but most of the movies are top-notch picks! :D
Heat is one of my very favorite movies ever.
I'm guessing many of those picks are also based somewhere in his mind about how he could dice them into his music. Minds like his are always thinking creatively and big picture. It's fascinating to watch what's probably going through his mind as he speaks.
Song in the beginning?!
James please allow US dollars for The Road: Part II / LOST HIGHWAY Vinyl when the album comes since I'm from the US
We have it on order at Amoeba! It's out 4/12 in the States. You can get the LP from us online if you don't live near one of our stores.
Oh thank the Lord thank you so much you guys are gods
Tin Tin, Moebius, Storm, XIII, Asterix, Blake and Mortimer, Alex, Luc Orient etc.
