This game hits it a little close for me, since I have alopecia totalis, which is complete baldness all over your body...even your eyelashes. Well....I guess I'll be taking over the world now. I feel that Gordon Freeman borrowed this game off of Kleiner back when he worked at Black Mesa, and he's describing the game to fellow coworkers on his lunch shift.
It makes perfect sense for the Freeman’s mind canon, as Kleiner is bald but is also implied to be kind of a psycho, even more crazy than Gordon himself. Playing an RTS game where the objective to genocide the hairies would surely fit into Kleiner’s M.O.

You could arguably say a lot of strategy games are warlord simulators. That's why I love strategy games so much! The feeling of me sitting on a throne or in a chair commanding armies of people, robots, etc. into working or fighting is a very appealing feeling.
I don't think "Cute characters going brutal/to war" is that unusual Ross, especially not in old school gaming. Cannon Fodder, Worms, Tiny Troops, even Settlers can go on there, and this is just from the top of my head. A lot of devs had these anti-mascot kind of games, made as some sort of "counter culture" to all the Marios, Sonics and Megamans, etc. Even the Baldies here seems to me like that, (rather than a commentary on bald people.) I guess this is why it's so obscure. You can't really get too famous with a game that seems to be a big in-joke. Nevertheless, great video as usual.

I dont remember his name but during one of the Normandy landings (there were 5 beaches, i think it was Sword or Juno) and a Scottish bagpiper charged into the battle playing his bagpipe with the rest of his men just blasting away on the instrument as bullets and shells rained down around him. When the fighting was over some captured German soldiers said they didn't shoot him because they thought he'd gone insane. Turns out he wasnt insane, only Scottish.
Played this back as a kid and loved how cute and quirky all the animations and violence is. Detailed, experimental and fun to just mess around and learn how everything works. Perfect 90's computer gaming charm.

Them removing the jumping on the bed animation for the breeding is definitely odd. It's probably for some trivial reason, but it humors me to think something like this happened... *Kids jumping on bed* Parent: "Why the hell are you jumping on the bed Jimmy and Suzy!?!" I think it's just a little too close to euphemism. I think if someone said to me that babies are made by jumping up and down on the bed... Most episodes of Freeman's Mind and Game Dungeon he does seem to average at 200k views, with some being as high as 400k or even 700k, a good dozen are up in 900k, with a few past 1 million views. Considering the 340k subscribers he's got now in April of 2024, I'd say that he has a pretty loyal fanbase with good viewing retention, and some reach beyond just his core fans. He may not be THE fastest growing channel, but it's been doing quite well for quite a long time, and I believe that a big part of that is that he has a very quality over quantity approach, there's long times between new episodes, but he makes the wait worth it. He's one of the ideal types of video content creators IMO.

This is quite the find on the internet! I never thought I'd see this game again after almost 30 years! I did most of the graphics for the game on my trusty old Amiga A1200 back in '94! Thank you for the epic review! Hehehe
It's amazing that a game which has been ported to so many different systems would have so little documentation on the internet about its ending. You'd think if it's not popular enough for anybody to know how it ends, or even whether a really straightforward cheat works, it shouldn't have been popular enough for a console release, but hey go figure.

Loved the game as a kid, dunno which version i had but turning all start baldies into soldiers and flying them over allowed me to win the whole campaign. After that i only played the first couple levels where the ai fights but not cheats. Last green levels and first desert levels. Trapping everything and torturing the enemy with all the traps, dunno if it was said but putting traps around houses blocks their upgrade till the trap is cleared.
2:50. It's not too crazy. DOS and Windows had completely different ways to do timing. So what I think happened here is that the Windows port was RUSHED (hence no cinematics either-- the claymation video renderer likely using tons of per-pixel/ low-level memory transfers which would have ran LIKE PISS in the oldschool windows GDI mode - pre-DirectX) so the added difficulty of a relatively new system with relatively few books at the time (so inexperience in Windows game programming on the team), plus a rush to target the platform, meant they hit Windows 95 more as an after-thought and started to cut features to meet the deadline.
I got to the second secret level. I think it involves dumping foxes into the water and getting the swordfish or whatever they are. The skunks also have a special fish.
I know this is an old video, but I recently found your channel and started watching your content. I remember playing the demo of Baldies 20 or so years ago, and I frankly didn't remember much of it _except_ the fact that you could hold one of the F-keys to keep spawning new guys from your cursor. So the information you found might not be all wrong, but it might only apply to the demo. I'm afraid I can't remember if it was the DOS or Windows version, but I believe it was the DOS one.
Interesting. 1999s Rollcage also had demo exclusive cheats on the F keys. Now I wonder if there were more. Certainly some material, if you wanna make fun of game journalists. :)

Ross, I am absolutely positive that I played a version that allowed you to spawn thousands of baldies. It would keep going the longer you held down the button. It was on one of the shareware/demo compilation discs if I recall so it's likely to have been left out in the full version.

I really liked this episode, as someone from NA it was nice to have someone explain this very EU game to me. Also that is quite the contrast in port difference. Also some amusing quips about the nature of hair. XD
I love this series because I can zone out for a while and when I come back Ross is theorizing about how much hair he'll have based on his lineage and what he should do in a worse-case scenario while game footage plays in the back trying so hard to be the main subject again.
1:45 reminds me of C&C Red Alert. The DOS version showed a video of weapons being assembled during installation, that was missing in the Windows version.

I remember the first time I played Team Fortress 2, I found a "PG-13" server. They didn't let us cuss or say anything 'too' profane. Meanwhile we're playing TF2, blasting each other into little red chunks.
Them removing the jumping on the bed animation for the breeding is definitely odd. It's probably for some trivial reason, but it humors me to think something like this happened...

I think it's just a little too close to euphemism. I think if someone said to me that babies are made by jumping up and down on the bed... I would blush, either being happy that a hot guy was talking about sex around me showing that his interested. The amount of times I've seen students toss their garbage in the park at lunch or seen McDonald's in the streets backs this up. Let's not forget the discarded gum that's so old, it can easily be mistaken for lichen growing on the sidewalk. This is in the same European country where Baldies was made too. Football smegheads are the worst for littering here, which is but one reason that Aberdeen's Old Town district and Glasgow are crime ridden shitholes.

@@BlimberryBoi Is he doing that bad? Most episodes of Freeman's Mind and Game Dungeon he does seem to average at 200k views, with some being as high as 400k or even 700k, a good dozen are up in 900k, with a few past 1 million views.
Considering the 340k subscribers he's got now in April of 2024, I'd say that he has a pretty loyal fanbase with good viewing retention, and some reach beyond just his core fans.
He may not be THE fastest growing channel, but it's been doing quite well for quite a long time, and I believe that a big part of that is that he has a very quality over quantity approach, there's long times between new episodes, but he makes the wait worth it. He's one of the ideal types of video content creators IMO.

It's amazing that a game which has been ported to so many different systems would have so little documentation on the internet about its ending. You'd think if it's not popular enough for anybody to know how it ends, or even whether a really straightforward cheat works, it shouldn't have been popular enough for a console release, but hey go figure.

Loved the game as a kid, dunno which version i had but turning all start baldies into soldiers and flying them over allowed me to win the whole campaign.
After that i only played the first couple levels where the ai fights but not cheats. Last green levels and first desert levels.
Trapping everything and torturing the enemy with all the traps, dunno if it was said but putting traps around houses blocks their upgrade till the trap is cleared.

for what it's worth, something about this episode felt more "game dungeon-ey" than the last two episodes.

2:50. It's not too crazy. DOS and Windows had completely different ways to do timing. So what I think happened here is that the Windows port was RUSHED (hence no cinematics either-- the claymation video renderer likely using tons of per-pixel/ low-level memory transfers which would have ran LIKE PISS in the oldschool windows GDI mode - pre-DirectX) so the added difficulty of a relatively new system with relatively few books at the time (so inexperience in Windows game programming on the team), plus a rush to target the platform, meant they hit Windows 95 more as an after-thought and started to cut features to meet the deadline.
I was also confused by the demo in 1995 and I'm back but I am going to relive it through this video

I know this is an old video, but I recently found your channel and started watching your content. I remember playing the demo of Baldies 20 or so years ago, and I frankly didn't remember much of it _except_ the fact that you could hold one of the F-keys to keep spawning new guys from your cursor. So the information you found might not be all wrong, but it might only apply to the demo. I'm afraid I can't remember if it was the DOS or Windows version, but I believe it was the DOS one.
Interesting. 1999s Rollcage also had demo exclusive cheats on the F keys. Now I wonder if there were more.

Ross, I am absolutely positive that I played a version that allowed you to spawn thousands of baldies. It would keep going the longer you held down the button. It was on one of the shareware/demo compilation discs if I recall so it's likely to have been left out in the full version.

I really liked this episode, as someone from NA it was nice to have someone explain this very EU game to me. Also that is quite the contrast in port difference. Also some amusing quips about the nature of hair. XD
Just when I was deciding what to watch while having my dinner, nice timing Ross.
I love this series because I can zone out for a while and when I come back Ross is theorizing about how much hair he'll have based on his lineage and what he should do in a worse-case scenario while game footage plays in the back trying so hard to be the main subject again.
1:45 reminds me of C&C Red Alert. The DOS version showed a video of weapons being assembled during installation, that was missing in the Windows version.
A tactical nuke. I did run through the installer a fair bit times just to see it. It was the tits. Also the game kicked ass, so that's a nice bonus.

Thanks so much for covering this game! I played it an awful lot as a kid but could never get very far. Now I realise that the inventions are a bit of a distraction in the early game. As you said there is little to no information about this game, so it's nice to see someone finally beat it!
