    Re the red and black suits. The original Spider-Man costume was black and red, blue highlights were used to high-light black in old comics. It’s why Superman has ‘blue’ hair. So the blue on the suit isn’t the primary color it’s just the highlight at the time.

    10:38 Blessing is the best. This is exactly what this franchise needs, in my opinion, let Spider-Man be Spider-Man. Do PETER-centered stories that immerse us in his world, with a close knit circle of friends, family, work, school, etc, where he needs to balance all of those obligations along with his obligations as Spidey. When he leans too far into being Spider-Man, he does save lives but hurts his relationships by missing the big moments in his personal life. He turns his back on being Spider-Man, and he lives the trauma of Uncle Ben's death all over again -- he could have done something, but he failed. We get close to that struggle (in some ways) in FFH, but we don't ever quite land it in a way that feels quintessentially Spider-Man. I think another trilogy that can develop his friendships and personal life more will rectify that. It's why Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite (just barely edging out Spider-Verse).
    I don't need Peter, when he is in his own movies, to really move the needle of the MCU. It takes a character with an identity that typically sits outside the rest of the Marvel universe when there is not an intentional crossover, and tries to make him function in a way that I don't think plays to the strengths of the character. Still, I'm just so happy to have some good Spider-Man movies, and promising looking ones coming soon.

    I love this movie. I think the comedy is top notch and it’s just so fun. Gyllenhal is top tier once the reveal happens, I remember thinking his performance was so generic for the first half but then it gets so good once we learn the truth. I also think the action sequence at the end is fantastic, pure Spider-Man fun on a scale we haven’t seen yet.

    To comment on talking about Fury and Hill being a little "off" and it being part of the reveal later and how good that is. Pretty sure I read that neither of then knew their characters weren't really themselves. So my guess is they would have been directed to act certain ways to get that effect without being told why or they actually were just phoning it in and it happened to work out lol.

    I like this one but the drone stuff really sticks out to me... especially the fact that Tony gives a 16 year old kid access to a massive arsenal of weaponry and what I assume is the worlds largest surveillance apparatus. Wasn't there an entire Captain America movie about how it is immoral to have the ability to assassinate anyone on the planet at the push of a button?

    How did we skip the final end credit scene that is legit BS. Like, I think it's great that we're getting JJ, but there is no way anyone would believe that butchered, cut up video clip from the guy that just CLEARLY attacked London. Where is all the actual news and civilian footage of Spider-Man destroying and dismantling all the drones around the bridge? And at it's worst, all it would take is for Fury to send one of those Skrulls back as Peter to get saved by Spider-Man to address any concerns about his identity. This is the easiest situation to clean up, and I don't understand how they are going to spin it against him.

    They were saying it's hard to stick the landing in a trilogy, but one thing we have to remember is that this isn't a bookend, some elements of this will surely leak into Dr. Strange 2, and then there is the announced next set of Spiderman movies, so it doesn't have to be a full blown closing of this chapter of Peter's life, it just has to have enough closure in specific areas, or at least leave things settled.

  • @KobytheHero
    @KobytheHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This movie feels really strange to me. It's good and fun, but it forgets the message of the previous movie only to do like a weaker version of it. At times, it doesn't even feel like you're watching a Spider-Man movie (I always think of the scene on the bus with the EDITH drone as a prime example). I don't dislike it, and Mysterio is awesome, but it feels like it's even further from what I'm looking for than Homecoming was.

    • @KobytheHero
      @KobytheHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @KobytheHero
      @KobytheHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Erik Kemeey but that’s exactly the issue. It continues a message that we had already wrapped up. The first one ends with him feeling like it’s okay to be a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” and his own man and then this movie happens and we have the same journey but with less of a focus

    • @KobytheHero
      @KobytheHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Erik Kemeey I definitely think that's a charitable read on this film, it is inextricably linked to whether or not he will be "the next Iron Man" and I think that sucks. I just wish they had focused on making these good Spider-Man movies instead of focusing on other aspects of the franchise (his relationship with Iron Man, and now his relationship with the previous versions of the franchise in NWH).

    • @KobytheHero
      @KobytheHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Erik Kemeey I definitely am fine with that, I’ve been a huge comic reader most of my life, I feel like they’re able to still focus the storylines and not revolve around that shared universe. I don’t hate these movies or anything I just feel like they’re the most popcorny in the MCU and I wish they had been a little tighter. I’m always hoping they bring it around though, and I hope NWH isn’t a mess

  • @CrossOutBryce
    @CrossOutBryce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I could not agree more with Tim that as a second MCU Spider-Man movie, this doesn't work too well. It feels like there should have been a movie before this where Peter could just be Spider-Man and also build stronger relationships with his classmates.

    • @doorsfan173
      @doorsfan173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly I think the relationship between Peter and his supporting cast (other than Ned) is the weakest piece of this franchise (that said, I do enjoy these MCU Spidey flicks). I like the supporting cast, but they feel more like vectors for MCU-style-humor, not characters we're invested in and who are close to Peter Parker.
      These movies do the power/responsibility balance with Peter always needing to choose: "do I be with friends or save lives?" And as one might expect, he always chooses to save people, but this has happened consistently without really developing his connection to anyone other than Ned IMO. All that to say, I don't feel like you see that classic struggle that Peter has, where he often has to be Spider-Man, but inadvertently hurts his relationships as Peter Parker by doing. It feels more like the poor guy just misses out on his childhood and just always sits on the outside- which FFH does acknowledge at least.

    I think Karen isn’t in this because if you remember he wasn’t supposed to have her. He hacked into the suit to get her, but after that Tony took the suit back and probably reset it before giving it to him again at the end of that movie. Then in the next one he got the Iron Spider which probably also had a version of the training wheels program on it so it wouldn’t have had her either. Then when Peter makes his suit in Far From Home he intentionally simplifies it in some ways so he probably didn’t include all the extra stuff that Tony did with the first Stark suit including Karen

      It's what killed this movie and the rest of MCU Spidey for me. He'll never get any victories on his own merit, just his iron boy talents at making new suits to solve his problems aka sell toys with every movie. It's Dan Slott era Spider-Man vibes when he was making new suits for no reason. Cool but not Spider-Man.

    • @aoe41015
      @aoe41015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jphugo15 he may use the stark tech but those are not the stuff he uses to win the fights, he uses tools ie the sign and club for weapons because he remembers the captain America fight with thanos and as a kid you’d obviously idolise that being a teen in a world of heroes. Also uses his own spider sense (not a fan of Peter tinkle) to fight hidden drones. I’d love him to use an OG homemade suit but kids will buy the toys and the fans love an upgrade suit. This is mid tier for me but much better than spiderman 3.

      That’s not the fault of the movie though, more the timeline in the mcu. Homecoming was before IF and EG. It made sense him keeping the iron spider suit because it reminded him of Tony. The Europe fights he’s using the noir suit and then makes his own in the final fight. I don’t dislike the fact that they use stark tropes but it does make sense in the timeline of the MCU and the way peter would be feeling after Tony’s death.

Jon Watts saw _Captain Marvel_ during post-production & decided to make Fury & Hill Skrulls as a post-credit, using a deleted scene of Fury & Hill in a car + bringing in the Skrull actors. While I love Jake as Mysterio, all the Mysterio sequences, and the dope spider-sense scene, this one ain’t it for me. I remember leaving the theater disappointed and I was just as disappointed rewatching. Homecoming is way better for me.
    I think the tone is inconsistent and I hate when it feels like something out of the Disney Channel (the whole bit with Ned and Betty that falls flat). My issue is that it sometimes feels like a bad cartoon that has “supporting” characters with zero arcs and little to no depth. It completely takes me out of the movie. May isn’t a character, Happy has ONE sincere scene, Ned does absolutely nothing, MJ isn’t given that much material, etc,.
    Peter being tired and trying to run from his responsibility is classic Spidey, but the execution was poor af with Peter trusting Beck with Tony’s final gift after knowing him for like a day.
    I like parts of this movie for sure, but man I don’t think it’s a good Spidey flick. A lot of it feels very made-by-committee to me

    I don't understand why people want these films to be in the MCU but never interact with the MCU. That's pointless to me.
    Having said that, this is probably the most mediocre Spider-Man movie I've ever seen. I hate the twist of Mysterio being the person who made BARF, there were so many ways to tie Mysterio into the universe and they chose the laziest way. And I also hate the post-credit scene. It's beyond stupid that people would believe a "hero" they had literally never heard against the guy who helped save half the known population of not just the world but the universe.
    Also, I disagree about Superior Spider-Man. Cool concept on paper, piss poor execution.

    • @Rainmanking

      It’s bizarre. We had 5 movies where Spiderman was the only hero in the world. The whole point of Spidey in the MCU was Spidey in the MCU and interacting with characters. Makes no sense to only do that for team up movies. If it were phase 1 maybe but these Marvel movies now all either feature other characters or make mention of them

      @@Rainmanking That's a good point. Almost every Phase 2+ movie or sequel movie features other MCU characters alongside the main character. It's inevitable that it would happen with MCU's Spider-Man. Plus it's literally part of the Sony/Marvel deal that an MCU character has to appear in the movie, right? First Iron Man, then Nick Fury, now Doctor Strange.

    @thefakejoey8549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There were traditional signs of Peter's Spider Sense in earlier movies (Civil War and Homecoming) but they didn't beat us over the head with it. Dodging what Bucky threw from behind during the airport fight scene (his eyes widen and he says "Woah!"), also dodging attacks that he can't visually see during the Ferry fight in Homecoming, etc. Then there's the more obvious "hair raising" scene in Infinity War.
    But I also liked what they did with him learning to trust it more.

    I have to agree with most of the comments here, something feels a little bit disappointing about this movie but I'm not sure what it is. As a spiderman movie I don't really like it that much, it feels like an average Marvel movie. Everything that happens in this movie seems to build up more of the Marvel universe then Spiderman's, I don't know if that makes sense. It feels like when they do a crossover episode in a cartoon/tv show. One example is Mysterio, even though he's suppose to be a Spiderman villain, it feels like he's an Ironman villain that Spiderman needs to deal with.

    At the end of this rewatch I wanna reach out to Tim Gettys and say, I'm sorry for my earlier comment from the original In Review. The raimi movies weren't as good as I remember and Maguires Peter is nowhere near as likeable as the other 2, TASM is a great movie minus the 3rd act and TASM 2 is not at all as bad as people think it is. Looking past my previous Raimi nostalgia I'll say now that Homecoming is the best Spider-Man film. I still think y'all ranking TASM2 at number one is off, theres just too much corporate meddling in that movie for me to put it anywhere near the top but it's a decent movie. Anyway that's just me getting all of that out of the way. Have a good day everyone 👍

    I really don't like this movie for all the reasons Blessing stated, but it also just rolls back Homecoming's character development. In terms of Karen and the suit, I'd say it's more likely when Tony gave Peter the suit back at the end of Homecoming, he'd put the Training Wheels Protocol back in place which would remove Karen. Karen doesn't appear until they remove the Training Wheels Protocol.

    Love the commentary but Tim has the rose colored glasses on if he thinks Holland and Zendaya have anywhere near the chemistry as Garfield and Stone. That's like saying How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is romance on the level of Casablanca. I love Zendaya as an actor but her direction in these films is awful. I want deadpan from the side characters but as the primary love interest it just does not inspire attraction or attachment to her character at all. It's just bad film making to have an apathetic love interest. If she wasn't "MJ", she would fit great.

    This is easily the best movie from this batch (not including Spiderverse). They NAIL the teen romance part of this, maybe better and realistic in terms of the subtle ways the characters interact than any movie I have ever seen. Peter and MJ's relationship is perfect, and the little moments that are created between them are impeccable. There is also a top notch Spiderman story built into this, culminating in the ultimate Spiderman trope which is Peter being betrayed by someone who he wants to look up to. And the reveal at the end caps it off so perfectly and sets us up for the next movie in a way that is a million times better than any set up for the future than we have seen in any of these movies. Not to mention the way this is a perfect epilogue to the Infinity Saga and deals perfectly with the emotional fallout of End Game. I cannot comprehend why people are not as high on this movie when every element it tries to execute is done better than any Spiderman movie before it.
