The ban was more like a temporary retail sales ban, every LAN house in Brazil had Counter-Strike installed in the computers. Considering that almost everyone had a pirate copy of the game around here, it didn't really affect the popularity of Counter-Strike in Brazil. The map creator (mataleone) did various other maps including one featuring São Paulo city called de_sampa.
cs_rio was really popular during network play in LAN houses and often requested to the server operator, de_sampa, not so much (the map was too large).
But it sure stopped those terrorists amirite?
Oh de_sampa is a really astonishing map! It's so large and complex but that's why I love it!

I'm from Brazil and I've played this map, at the time when I was on average 12 to 11 years old, many Lan Houses had this map that people from there played, some played Dust, Italy, and among other maps, this one game had been banned because of the map that represented an almost real place, this kind of scared a lot of people at the time, so much so that a lot of people here in Brazil started to prohibit people from playing this map, and for these reasons it was banned, but not for a long time, then it was released again, even with this map circulating on the internet, but it was good to revive this pearl of old, A hi to all of Brazil.
Same here. Also: "Meu vizinho plantou uma semente no meu quintal" starts playing in the back of my head every time someone mentions this map. I would often camp inside that joint diner place just to hear the songs in loop. There were versions of this map that even had a functional television which would play random Telenovela scenes from whatever was popular at the time. It was simply hilarious. Matches would often devolve into soccer matches and random fooling around as well.

This is similar to the story with de_school the mapper made a map of his high school and it freaked people out, he got in big trouble for it.

Lan Houses were spread all over the country, and every single one had Counter Strike 1.6. It was a great game and people would flood places to play.
As someone who was a patron of an lan house, Me, the other patrons and the owners received this news and went "Oh no, anyway". Like, everyone kept playing. Let's say the ban was announced, but not enforced.

It's really rare a game getting banned like that here in Brazil, the only other case I can remember outta my head is they've aslo banned one of the first three Doom games. The reason behind has because a guy started a shootout in a cinema (can't remember if anyone got hurt or killed tho) and they found out the guy had played one of the three firt Doom games in his PC, and one of the levels in that specific game was in a cinema, and the police and the government thought he made that shootout only because he played that game and got inspired by it (he didn't) and they banned the game after. But it were thankfully unbanned shortly after.

Rockstar's Bully also got banned for a long time, you had to use something like a VPN to get on Steam, but today you can buy it no problem.
The game was banned for "encouraging the act of bullying", what is kinda of ridiculous as anyone that played that game knew that Jimmy was more of of an anti-bully and the game highly discouraged any act of bullying by punishing the player.
Funny enough, afaik they never touched Manhunt or even GTA, and back in the day there was a TON of pirated modded GTAs that you could buy from street vendors with Brazil inspired content, some got really infamous like GTA RIO modded from San Andreas or that hilarious GTAIII dubbed in Portuguese.

Funny you mentioned Favela of MW2, because that map had a bit of controversy as well, it was removed from the game for a short period in 2012.
there was Arabic writing in a bathroom above a toilet that said "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" which is offensive because Allah shouldn't be referred to in a bathroom.

There was a time GTA San Andreas got banned in Brazil too , because someone made a mod of gang members dressed with soccer team shirts and they started killing each other .

If you want something that's also brazillian (but, also, latin american too) you should search for Vila do Chaves map! The map was based on a mexican comedy series that became hyper popular in all latin america and a lot of lan houses in Brazil had this map installed.

A fun fact is that piracy was huge in Brazil, so there's nothing that the government could do. In "LAN houses" was really popular.
I played a lot of cs_rio, cs_chaves and fy_poolday
Thanks to the ban I've had bought the game in the supermarket. There were huge baskets near the cashiers topped up with the game case. Good times!
Btw, I've never meet someone who hated the map because it got the game banned. The ban itself wasn't a huge deal, loads of people still managed to buy the game trough Steam using a international CC and the internet cafes always had the game.

This map was amazing to play online! I've played many many times on it. On the Lanhouse, online on community servers, normal mode, zombie mode, knife mode, oh yeah that was amazing!
Also, there are some easter eggs on this beauty, like the Ovni at the tower.

some points that you missed were the 2(?) songs that play in the map, one being iconic, even showing up in the 2022 csgo major announcent
There was even another infamous Counter-Strike community project called Counter-Strike: Malvinas. It was a Counter-Strike: Source mod which prompted strong controversy in the United Kingdom that resulted in Dattatec's website was targeted by British hackers on 27 March 2013.

I was thinking during the video maybe there was something derogatory said about Brazil in the map but nope. It seems that CS was banned because an unofficial map took place in Brazil.
I once heard that guy in my age made map for cs go that map was his school. Police got involved and kid got some serious problems
I am brazilian and I played this map a lot back in 2000's. I never knew it was banned. I did not even notice that. There was a cyber cafe near my home - in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro - with nothing less than 40 computers. So once a week (usually friday or saturday), dozens of people (mostly teenagers like me at that time) paid around BRL 10.00 or 15.00 to spend all night, closed doors, playing C.S, GTA San Andreas and others. It usually ended up 6 or 7 am.
Well, the things was... the ban was announced, but never enforced.
I was a patron from an Lan House and we all reacted like "Oh no! Anyway..." and we kept going about our business.

really nice video, you just forgot the easter eggs in the map, there's some famous brazilian songs playing at some parts and if you make a specific set of actions you could spawn a controller (i think thats the name) from half life 1
I used to play this map alot. Especially on servers with mods like Warcraft mod or Diablo mod that was really popular in Poland. Due to open nature and high celieng you could get on alot of rooftops making the gmae really fun with the ability to jump really high.

On CS 1.6 browser version online this map is still played regularly and it is very popular, servers are being often full.

This map was very popular in lan houses back in early 2000's.
I don't think servers run this map anymore but yeah, it's a cool map to play with bots in local games and even better if you bring friends to play. Also, the background music in T spawn is very interesting and spot on to say the least.
In addition to that, I never knew about CS1.6 being banned because of this map and it was a dumb move to make. The game has lots of custom maps based in real life locations so I don't think that should be a problem for governments.

Esse mapa é muito bom zé, eu me lembro que tinha um easter egg que envolvia quebrar props do mapa numa certa ordem pra spawnar um Alien Controller em cima do campo de futebol, spawnava também um manta-ray, tristemente ambos sem nenhuma animação... Mas era divertido mesmo assim.
If you spawn as a CT you can climb to the roofs and walk all over the map from above by jumping on the energy cables soon after you go up a stair on a porch nearby the spawn.
For people who like slow paced maps and strategies , this seems pretty fun

It's been years since I've heard of this map, I do not remember when I used to play it but it was probably beetwen 10 and 12. Anyways, I remember playing this map a lot (I do not know why tho), mostly at my cousin's computer, now that I see it again I'm really impressed, the atmosphere/setting is really well done

I was there, as a teen and later as a young adult when the two bans happened. the 2008 ban was not even that bad (nobody obeyed it). The 2003 partial ban said that no MINORS could play the game. with the loss of customers, THOUSANDS of cyber cafes closed. so nostalgic 😞 i miss my truancy times

I went to college in Brazil and I remember when cs got banned. We rolled up to the lan house (as we often did) and suddenly we were like "Where's cs"? It was then that we knew about the ban. People just played it on the computers that weren't visible from street level.
To be honest, this was one of the maps that I liked to play the most in 2005, and I didn't know why it didn't appear in CS Source or CSGO afterwards.
Na prática, nada acontece feijoada. O "banimento" foi algo bem simbólico, em toda lan house tinha cs, inclusive em todo camelô tinha o cd do cs. Se you don`t entendeu my friend, translatezeia aí no google.

Did you know this map has an easter egg? You can summon Nihilanth by breaking some objects in a certain order.
This map also have a easter egg, if you do some tasks in order you can summon one alien in one room.
