There's actually a bit of optional foreshadowing of this. You can buy meat buns and while Shinigami comments on how good they smell, Yuma doesn't think they taste particularly good. Which seems innocuous until you remember what Shinigami likes.
During my play through, when given the option to try a meat bun, I said 'hell no, in a city like this they might be made of people'. As a JOKE. Then later, in like Chapter 3, I said 'well everyone is eating them so it's probably fine.' The existential HORROR I felt in Chapter 5 when I realized I had Yuma eat people was unrivalled .
From the moment Yakou and Kurumi started mentioning about the meat buns and how delicious they were, I already started to be suspicious of what the meat actually was😭😭
Sweet mother of goose these last two chapter took a very dark turn. Going from solving murders to the dead walking around and corpse being turning into meat buns.🤮
I mean Kodaka has always had a knack for dark games. DR is full of some pretty gruesome kills, the kids in UDG all went through some pretty bad stuff. Kotako especially comes to mind. The final two chapter of DRV3 are some of the best in that subject matter for me
From the moment ‘meat buns’ were even mentioned could see this twist coming LOL. It just couldn’t be a random piece of world-building for all of Kanai Ward to love a specific meat product of unknown origin
When I was at the beginning of the game and just going to the hotel to get the others detectives and I saw the meat bun stand and heard how popular they were I instantly joked they were made from human meat. As soon as I saw the meat buns in the factory I realized with horror that my joke was actually true.
The first time I heard the characters say meat buns in this game, I knew there was a hidden meaning behind it as I was reminded of a certain case in China in which human flesh was *allegedly* used as an ingredient for meat buns.
Man, I never suspected the entire time that the meat buns were suspicious the whole game. But when I got to chapter 5 and got to the factory, man... I'm never gonna look at a meat bun the same again. I fed Yuma two of these thinking they was harmless the whole time.
I swear to god when I understood that “meat bun” secret and remembered the ramen guy saying “I figured what people here like” I was nearly pissing myself. I was like “did that fu*ker put human meat in ramen???”. Meanwhile in reality he had literally the worst luck in the entire game
Nah the ramen guy was able to replicate the nutrients from the meat buns to make food for the Kanai Ward residents. In a sense, it's like plant based meat with legitimately none of the murder.

Btw, the fact Karumi was following Yuma but then suddenly disappeared without him noticing was so scary, I was panicking so much
i thought she died bro, as shinigami said, she definitely acts before she thinks (SORRY KURUMI) 💀
She wouldn't be killed. She was a homonculus too, and homonculi dont eat each other.

Oh my god you turned Yuma into a cannibal!
Honestly, I’m really glad that I didn’t learn you could do that until after I beat the game. I would’ve probably thrown up for real.
I tried it first chapter. I wanted to throw up so much
I made him do that too lol. I actually had a good chuckle out of it when learning the secrets of the meat buns though.
I did that 😭 i made Yuma a cannibal
Me: the meat buns are made of people.
Also Me after this scene: i was fucking joking.
I feel bad for the players who got meat bun’s before learning about what they were really made of. The horror they must have felt when they realized 😭
