    As you may be able to tell, I made most of this up as I went. Hence why it took 3 days! However we got there in the end. 👍

    You’ve done a lovely job of the roof mate. I’m a roofer of 30 years. No corners cut. Everything done exactly. As it should be

    I’m still in awe of the fact you are doing this yourself and doing such an incredible job. Said it before... there’s a few professional roofers who could learn a bit 👍✅

    I received my Roof Slate Chalkboards yesterday. I was afraid when I saw the damaged cardboard but it was intact.
    It is a great pleasure to have a small piece of your beautiful home in my home :)

    Hi Tim. Thanks again for your custom. Exceptional work here. You've displayed workmanship that we expect to see in only the most experienced slaters. Thanks again and let us know if you need anything else. All the best, the Buy Roof Slate team.

    Thank you for sharing your work with the slate. We don’t have much of that where I live in Seattle, Washington. It’s amazing stuff! So weird that you can just cut it like that!

    When installing lead valleys you only nail first one third of the lead allowing for the high expansion co-efficient lead has. Secondly you never bead the edges of the lead, due to them flattening over time and any snow or detritus accumulation will cause capillary attraction and draw water in. You all way either install tilting fillet and dress the lead over the tilting fillet or in your case dress the lead over the wooden tile batons. Lastly you never nail through the lead anywhere that is subject to water, the reason being that constant expansion and contraction will open up the nail hole opening and allow water ingress, you only nail at the rear of the tilting fillet or on top of the buttons. That’s the advice from the lead development association.

    I’ve been a roofer for 20 years and u have done a very tidy job seen tradesmen do a lot worse only thing I would have done differently is dress the lead valley up onto the battons to give it a good upstand other than that top notch 👌🏻

    Hi mate, just a note the lead valleys needed to be put on builders paper or directly onto the valley boards.
    When you put the lead valleys on top of any roofing felt including roof shield the lead is prone to sweat.

    • @rsg666
      @rsg666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thoughts exactly, also, the lead should be dressed up onto the top of the baton for extreme weather conditions. That's way we've been doing it for 32 years. He should also have angled every slate tale on the hips before the lead is fitted.

    I was just about to advise you not to nail down the side only at top and covered with next bit of lead, but you already learnt your lesson lol. Also code 4 lead max lengths is 1.2 meters and code 5 is 1.5meters.

    5.50 bottom right hand slate is to narrow should have used a slate and a half no slate should be less than the lap.

    1.46-1.51 You've nailed the lead just past the welt this will leak, you should have used a lead clip tucked in the welt and dragged over and nailed into a batten.

  • @ashleyholder-smith2512
    @ashleyholder-smith2512 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    No felt/underlay under the lead??

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes?

    • @craigkearney8883
      @craigkearney8883 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There shouldn't be any breatheable underlay under the lead at all, moisture will become trapped between the underside of the lead and the membrane causing underside corrosion. Lead only sits on either wood or building paper

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig Kearney ive gone with most manufacturers and roofer’s advice with that as I was unsure which order is was layered. The membrane that is there is not the same as the main roof, ie no water is running down it, it’s just simply a strip to create a slip layer to isolate the lead from roof to allow for movement.

    • @craigkearney8883
      @craigkearney8883 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRestorationCouple yes but it's breathable felt that allows vapor and moisture to pass through it which in turn will trap the moisture. If you were to see the underside of lead valley that's been lined with breatheable membrane you'd realise that it's shouldn't be used and causes corrosion.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I’m with you now, it’s the fact it’s breathable that’s the issue. 😬Just chatting to the lead worker doing the hips today who agreed with what you’re saying. Well hopefully the well vented void below will reduce the risk but will know for next time. 👍

  • @gaza19661310
    @gaza19661310 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of put having a welt on either side of the lead valley have a lath either side with the lead dressed so the lead has an upstand, less likely to leak.
