The Truman renovation was 100% necessary as the whole thing was in danger of collapse. He bit the bullet after years of kicking the can down the road by his predecessors.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit the White House 8 times. Each time you notice something new. My favorite of the colored rooms is the Green Room. I especially like a coffee urn that’s on display in front of a sofa. The one time I haven’t been able to visit, but I always wished I could, was during the holidays to see the decorations. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, special nighttime candle lit tours are offered during the evening hours. The marine band entertains in the Cross Hall performing Christmas music. If you ever plan on traveling to Washington, contact your congressman’s office to request tickets. It really is worth seeing.
It's really quite amazing how many Americans don't know about the Canadians burning down the Whitehouse until they go to sports games and the Canadian crowd start singing the great song😊
I would LOVE to go spend time in the curator's office! My interest is in the history of the house itself, regardless of who is currently living there. I was also surprised when we toured in person in 2012 that the rooms seemed smaller in person than in pictures & video coverage, & that north portico, I really wonder how many people took that too sharply because that also seems more narrow when you see it in person.
A major omission was the Truman reconstruction of 1948-1952, which gutted the entire White House to its 4 exterior walls and then rebuilt the interior from scratch using modern codes and materials. Also, Jacqueline Kennedy's 1961 White House Fine Arts Committee and redecoration of rhe public rooms set standards of historical integrity and property management still practiced today. And the East Room's use for large gatherings such as major presidential speeches, funerals, concerts, and diplomatic events might also be of interest to viewers.
Thanks for the this. Was waiting for this point in the video, when it never came I went to the comments to make sure someone had already covered this point. Comment should be pinned 👍
So James Monroe moved back into the White House In 1871 after he been dead for 40 years? Did President Grant have any objections to this? How did this all work?
Sounds like the perfect time for Monroe's corspe to shuffle around and try to usher in a second era of good feelings...only since Grant hallucinated the entire thing in a drunken stupor, it led to the (first) Guilded Age instead.

I think you flipped Monroe’s year of presidency from 1817 to 1871

Very well done
I don't care what's inside the White House. I'm interested in what's below it. How far down does it extend? How many floors and tunnels are there?
Because you're already questioning it, you have some idea. You'd be amazed.
More importantly… where do they keep the gimp?
@@BillMcGirr The military/government opportunity was there for all of us. Some went that way, others became "normies" you gave up that opportunity.
Thank you for this interesting video. I knew little about White House history, and so I learned a lot.
What about the upper floors?
How did you miss Mrs. Kennedy and her tremendous work contribution?

A room for polishing the silver? Must be a lot of silver to get its own room.
heard you can find coca there...in one of the lockers.
More likely in the library where it was found before they realized how close it was to the first crackhead! It was then "actually found in a locker" 😂
A Room you missed was the President's Personal Office.
Sitting at the Resolute Desk, and looking left, a door leads to the President's Personal Office
