Ronald Johnson I was arrested for riding bike on the sidewalk... was that my fault? I didn’t feel safe riding on a busy street, so I took on the high way. Around 7:17 PM. Out the entire time I encountered 5 pedestrians. Was charged with Obstructing Traffic and Resisting arrest. I wasn’t clear on what CRIME I committed, riding on the sidewalk is a civil right violation. But today I’ve seen the same precinct on the street, while people ride bike on the sidewalk. They’re middle aged white males around 26-40. Nothing happened...

Police Departments have historically oppressed the poor and socially/economically disadvantaged. This has resulted in a warranted distrust of the police. One strategy that needs to be employed is choosing the officers from the community they grew up in, and placing them back in those community to police. This way they have a vested interest and prior knowledge of the communities concerns and issues.

That's not true I'm from a poor area and I wasnt raised to fear the police. People fear the police in poor areas because the police put that fear there themselves. I use get stop and harrassed for no reason because of were I lived, I thought at the time it was legal what they were doing. I never been in jail or commited any crimes except for drinking in public and smoking weed. Cops have a mentality that its them against the people in the neighborhoods they patrol the poor areas. They see everyone in poor neighborhoods as criminals plain and simple, there is more crime in poor neighborhoods but that's because they are poor neighborhoods. My neighborhood for say is not like Compton in LA, or even jersey city or paterson or newark low income areas like that. But there was a double standard I lived on 26 st you get passed the 40s and the neighborhood was different especially up town in the 80s the kids had new parks basketball court, recreation centers by us nothing courts that were falling apart and the park never maintain, we use to fix the courts ourselves. Never seen any political people show any interest in our neighborhood unless it was election time. So that mentality they have is what causes poor people to fear the cops not trust the cops and to hate police. Because your treated less than because your poor. So the police are the ones that created this persona people have of them. Poor people account for shit to them their rights dont mean shit to them and abuse there power. a ot all but some and the ones that dont do something are worse they cover up for the bad ones. But that is changing it is, you see more cops getting fired or arrested than ever before that's due to social media and phones with cameras cant hide from a video and lie your way out of a video, you cant deny a video. So slowly but surely the brass is going to have to do the right thing and covering things up is alot more risky these days for them. But my point I hate how they make themselves out to be misunderstood or perceived in a bad light they did that to themselves for letting the bad ones get away with shit.

I'm a young black guy and I wanted to be a cop, I passed that 6hr exam, clean record, great physical shape, no moving violations whatsoever, fresh out of college and they denied me for student loans on my credit report. I would like to believe that this is true about wanting to have more inclusion, unfortunately its a gimmick, so is a black man fresh out of college making 80k for a fortune 500 company. I have a white friend who served time in prison and they hired him on the police force. Lets keep it real, they reserve those jobs on the police force for young white males and females because jobs are scarce. We really have racial problems in this country and there are good people that are trying to make a difference, unfortunately no one really wants to fix this problem.

As a former Marine and about to retire from a city force you are 100 % correct. The city that i have worked in were i was born and raised now the calls and the population are Mexican/Hispanic and some Blacks. The mayor for 20 years is white , and runs the Police dept. The director white the force about 70% white. The white officers the vast majority should not be there. They cheat by using a city address just before they get hired many of them are not fit to be a janitor let alone a police officer dealing mostly with minorities.. There political influence and nepotism is second to none. There arrogance is beyond words. With that said there are some but few white officers that are from the city and those do a great job with out problems. The police department pays a lot dont let those false salary given to the public fool you. I make as a patrol man a little over $120,000 a year straight no OT. the salary goes up very quickly not including extra jobs which i do not work..The department in general the officers in politics are the worst they control everything they do not care about the needs of the people they are there for themselves using the system to benefit them and there buddies the majority white with 1 or 2 token Blacks or hispanics that go along with there corrupt agenda .One more thing dont get fooled by the bullshit false tool they use they cant pass the test, they are not interested ,they have hired some of the most goofy pathetic people i have seen that do not belong there and are there for they pay and benefits that they are taking away from the local natives. This is what Blacks should address not so much the Police shooting the majority of Police are not racist many greedy and arrogant yes it starts from the top.

And the most important issue I think that they never touched on was that a lot of people straight out hate the police and demonize them. Being part of the community as they said in the video is important but how do you become part of the community if they constantly see you as a threat and hate you? That's a much bigger question that needs to be addressed

This recruitment song has been going on for more then 30yrs. They over looked tickets and know misdemeanors . Not for me I had a spotless back round. Bottom line they just cant cut it. wow, what a racist video. As long as the opportunity is equal it doesn't matter if the outcome fits your perception. When you promote one group of people for an arbitrary factor you discriminate against others for not having that arbitrary factor. This is the problem with affirmative action policies. It is ok to ask why more of the population don't try to become a police officer but trying to tilt the scales is unethical.
If you want a historical reason. In the past democrat owned areas limited policing in "black areas" and now they claim policing in "minority areas" are racist. It should be simple someone reports a problem an officer is sent.(not to all problems obviously)

I hate affirmative action programs like this. The only way to overcome racial problems is to adopt a color blind approach. To deliberately give favoritism to people of one race is no different than deliberately prohibit one race. To say that it is okay because the race being favored is African Americans is racist! The problem of few black police is the black community. Black parents should focus on keeping their kids straight and set them on the right path. Black adolescence should focus on improving their lives for themselves and their children. Nothing else will fix the problem.
