    🌽 I tried two-sisters last year! This was additionally my first ever attempt at growing both Sweetcorn and Squash. So like yourself I went fairly well in without much an idea what would happen. But I *did* get both some Corn and a good handful of large (Crown Prince) Squash. The huge mistake I made was not realising just how fast the Squash plants grow 😱 Basically the Squash won the ground war, and the battle for air supremacy from the Corn was hence substantially compromised. This year I’ll be letting my 🌽 get much, much more established before introducing the Squash plants. I’ll also be interplanting Leeks into my other Corn bed, I think, as they’ll sit happily below the tall Corn plants.

    • @jeffreyrossi5084
      @jeffreyrossi5084 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might have better luck using a bush variety of squash, you'll get the shade on the roots without pulling the corn down. The beans usually aren't a problem.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Sorry for such a late reply. That's interesting to hear how you had success with a two sisters setup and I can well imagine how the squashes just took over the small corn plants! I like the idea of using leeks 👍

      You could also use a bush bean as a living mulch for the sweetcorn. I would personally forgo the squash, as mentioned its to rampant and blocks out too much light as air in the UK

    They did Three Sisters in the American Northeast, which isn't *that* different from where you are. It probably helps to use the same kinds of plants used in that area, and to build the mounds like you're supposed to.

    Morning Niall the raspberry bush will actually go under the bed edges and take over the lawn 😱 I finally gave up and put them in HUGE pots. I gave my asparagus a large bed of its own so fingers crossed 🤞. 3 sisters do great in a large area 😂😂 so I do 2 sisters instead. Luckily I don’t like those baby corn so all good there. It should be ok since they are in direct sun all day! 🤞🤞 I'll let you know how it turns out as I am in a cold short season climate...but corn does grow here...Zone 4B Sudbury On Canada ❤️

Is it cold enough there for your parsnips to go dormant in the winter? I'm afraid that if I leave them out they will keep growing past their prime.

    Nice video Niall, honest gardening. We live and learn, it how i really learn. The three sisters i did, was near each other, rather than in same bed,it worked, now did it work individually anyway, who knows. Those thornless blackberries do like to ramble don't they, i have them at home. Fairplay growing asparagus, i like it, but never grew it. Raspberries do like to multiply, so a good idea. Good to laugh, let live,and learn. Enjoy the journey, and remember you have had a very busy year, re weeds, you will have a goid few theraputic days transforming those beds, i'm in the process of that,i did mulch, cardboard and all, weeds still come,we are guests among the weeds, healthy to have some i say ha ha. Have a super day, you did a super job with those beds, and only one season. Constantly making mistakes, and problems for myself here ha ha.

      Yeah I think it could - it would be a 2 sisters bed!

    We all make mistakes, that's how we learn as well as our successes. Would dwarf french beans and sweetcorn in your opinion have a chance of success? Sowing the dwarf french beans after the sweet corn has established to avoid some competition for light.

      I think that pairing would work. In fact the bit that I didn't mention in the video is that in one of the beds, I planted dwarf beans, but sadly they all got eaten during one night!!

    I've found out this year its really pointless sowing indoor early for most veg. They become leggier than a supermodel in no time.

      100% - some things work well, but it's a battle against the leggy seedlings isn't it!

    They are not weeds. They are "unplanned biodiversity"
