I always let my new birds out the day of their arrival. Of course it depends on the time they came into my home. I did have a rehomed bird arrive after 8pm. That bird I settled and made sure he had food and water. I also gave the bird a bit of nut as a night treat. I did sit with him for a little while before turning off lights. Because the room was very dark, I didn’t cover his cage all of the way. I always like to take the new birds away from the other birds to have one on one time with minimal distractions.😊

I love that, one-on-one time for the new bird. I like doing that too!

All really great advice! I offer my birds my fingers too. I understand why some parrot 'trainers' say never to do it, but I believe allowing ouselves to be vulnerable is an important part of building mutual trust; just as we are asking our birds to make themselves vulnerable to us.
Today, Rax is in the bird room with the baby kakarikis for the first time, where he can get to all the cages and interact with all the birds. He's spent a couple of days in there just on his own cage, but now the little ones are agile enough to interact with him around the whole room, so I'm interested to see if any friendships evolve or play-relationships develop.

I love the way mutual trust feels too!
Speaking of which, is Rex building it with the babies? I’m so excited that you had babies!

@@ParrotBliss There's been a whole shift in dynamics with babies around.... the budgies spend a lot of time hanging out with them and sharing grass together, while Rax seems happy for them all to get in his large cage for a fossick while he just quietly observes.
Rax has been very snuggly lately; it's the end of the breeding season and he's moulting, so maybe he's treating them like the new babies in the flock and giving them some latitude with the rules, as he would with other birds' babies in the wild.
