I not use 555, I like &-logic. (4011)
Why alcaline, why not 2x Li-ion?

Here 555 is used to generate pulse and 4011 is a 4 Nand gate ic.
Yes you can use Lithium ion battery ( Min. Voltage: 4.5V and Max. Voltage: 16V)

2xCell for horizontal, and 2 cell for vertical.
