    I wanted to take a minute and extend a BIG thank you to you and the other folks at JayzTwoCents for all your helpful videos. I've been wanting to build my own PC for about 15 years now, but as a single-income family, I didn't want to commit and potentially waste any of our precious budget. Your videos gave me the insight and the confidence to finally take the plunge. 51 is probably a bit along to start in the PC build area, but better late than never. With an old but basically unused Antec Nine Hundred case and 650W power supply I already had, I was able to build a respectable rig for under $1000 even having room in the budget to take advantage of a Be Quiet fan sale and replace all the 120mm fans ( the 200mm had an unusual mount that prevented replacement). Your "what to do after you've built your PC" video was a particular lifesaver as I was way out of my element there. Thanks and high fives all around. Have an awesome day.

      First of all - Congrats on your new PC!
      There's no age limit to start a new hobby and enjoy what life has to offer. Some people discover new interests long after their retirement just because they suddenly have the time.
      Technology made such huge leap not only in the past decades, but even just in the past years, that people who have been building PCs for just 10 years work with completely different technological abilities compared to what we have today. Even though the typical consumer doesn't really *need* the latest products, there are still constant improvements and new things coming out.

      I‘d disagree. 6 cores just won‘t cut it anymore until next gen. I‘d always consider buying a 8 core or more if you‘re building now. Or you‘ll have to upgrade sooner as you wanted. And if you aren‘t short on money or don‘t have money issues, hell buy the best off the shelf.

    I would do a hybrid build: A Ryzen 5600(X), with a cheaper but solid motherboard, the MSI B550-A Pro, the rest of the build would be more or less the same with some small savings here and there, in which case there should be just about enough cash left to upgrade the 3060 Ti to a 3070.

    3060ti is on average 2% slower than the 6700xt at 1080p.
    Same performance at 1440p.
    And 3% faster at 4k.
    According to Hardware Unboxed 50 game average benchmark.
    Choices should consist mostly of DLSS vs having more vram for 4k.
    Both cards can ray trace, not sure it's worth it on this level of card, performance will take a huge hit regardless of choice.

      @@102728 it depeneds, Jay said the Intel build was also able to get a twitch stream running, with the 12400f no chance, there you need the i7, same with AMD... and as he said with the around 100 you would have save you couldn´t buy a better GPU anyway, so why don´t spendi it on the CPU ?

      @nattylightbro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Simon-ct6nq I think you are slightly uneducated in the subject and would like to kindly inform you that the 12400 is definitely capable of "getting a twitch stream running". Not sure where you got the information about needing an i7 to stream but that is just wrong. The same goes for the ryzen build. A 5600x is more than capable for a streaming rig. Hopefully I can save you or someone else some money in the future.

    • @doabrad1850
      @doabrad1850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nattylightbro Yup. As an example, from what I've seen from GamersNexus and other places, despite having two fewer cores and four fewer threads, an i5-12400 gets impressively close to an i9-9900K in core heavy applications. Gaming wise, the 12400 usually takes the win due to its much better IPC and higher L3 cache (18Mb versus the 16Mb of the 9900K). It goes to show that there's more to CPU performance than just how many cores and threads it has. I mean, a Xeon E5-2690 v3 has 12 cores and 24 threads, yet, despite that, because it's a CPU from 2014 and processor IPC wasn't nearly as good back then, the E5-2690 v3 gets absolutely demolished by the i5-12400. A strong six-core/twelve-thread CPU is more than enough for streaming. Also, in terms of live streaming, considering that nowadays most modern Nvidia and AMD GPUs come built-in with streaming encoders, it makes the performance of the CPU far less important since, at least with most modern AMD GPUs, it's possible to live stream directly from the Radeon Adrenaline software. Additionally, from what I've tested, streaming and recording through Radeon Adrenaline is much less demanding than doing those things via OBS, so having a mega powerful processor for streaming isn't nearly as crucial as it was in say, 2014. Over the last few years, so much misinformation has been spread in that anything less than eight cores and sixteen threads is absolute garbage, when in reality, that couldn't be further from the truth since the performance of a CPU is dependent on many more factors than just the number of cores and threads it has.

    Jay, about your criticism of VAT: it's just a different name for what you call sales tax.
    Well, there are a few differences:
    1. It's included in the price; the price you see is the price you pay - the whole tax thing happens between the seller & the government (Inland Revenue in our case 🇬🇧).
    2. Sure, prices can vary from 1 part of the country to another in different stores, but if it's the same company then it'll *usually* be the same price. If you're ordering online, the only difference (from the same site) between 1 part of the country & another is usually postage, & even then it's probably only if you live on some island or whatever that isn't connected with a road bridge.
    3. Unless we run our own business, or earn *significantly* more than average, then we don't have to keep all our receipts for a yearly grovelling for approval before the tax overlords.

    I would swap motherboards in the AMD system, x570 to a b550 tomahawk or a MSI one, take a cheapest "slower" RAM and overclock the RAM, in the MSI Bios you have a "tool" called memory try it! with different profiles and is an easy way to get more speed in the RAM without knowing too much, you choose one speed and timings and try if it works in your RAM. Tridentz 3200CL14 works with the Tridentz 3600CL16 settings without problem. A lot of RAM kits have the same hardware and the only thing you have different is the XMP profile, go for the cheapest and then you have the "optimized" profile in the Bios.

    GPU: I went with a RTX 3060 (12Gb) rather than a 3060ti. I do 3d rendering and the amount of Vram is the limiting factor for me. Gaming is fun, but not a priority for me.

      At this stage in the 30xx life-cycle, "normal" would be ~$/€250 for the 3060, $/€350 to, maybe, 400 for the 3060Ti and 500 - 550 for the 3070. Right now, the 3060 Ti is still at €550 to 600 where I live and the 3070 would actually make more sense with the cheapest at just over 600. But that's still too friggin' high. I've been using Geforce cards since the very, very early days and usually always went for the mid-range (my last four were 260 -> 460 ->660 -> 1060) and never paid more than €200 to €250. I kinda disagree with the choice of the 11th Gen Intel. If you get a 12th Gen Intel, you'll be able to upgrade the CPU once 13th Gen comes out because Intel isn't changing the socket type. And if you buy a MOBO that supports DDR4, you can still make use of the better processor. Also, the i5-12400 is better that the i7-11700 isn't it? And almost $100 less. Another thing too is the 3060 Ti. The new 6650 XT is virtually identical, performance wise, in 1080p and can be had for just over $400. So basically, you can do better, for less, with the 12th gen Intel and 6650 XT.

      plus z590 only supports 1 gen 4 drive. Z690 can give you like 4 to 5 gen 4 drive options. 12600k would be like 200-250 dollars so cheaper than 11700k and faster in both single threaded and multi threaded. And 200 bucks will get you a solid msi z690 a pro motherboard. And like you said you can upgrade to raptor lake which will have up to 24 core and 32 threads. Plus you get gen 5 pcie and much more pcie lanes from the chipset.

    The one thing I would change on the amd build is the cooler. That hyper 212 will not cool the 5800x well. The 5800x runs very hot since it's cores are concentrated in one smaller spot when compared to other CPU. Top end 360 aio coolers still reach 85°C when under full load. The hyper 212 would probably be reaching above 80C while running a game. May get to the point of thermal throttling.

I only stuck the Vetroo in there because I was RMA'ing the Arctic Liquid freezer due to a little VRM fan squeal, the Vetroo isn't even close to the LF II 280mm performance, but it's good enough that I still haven't had the motivation to swap the CLC back in.
      I admit that the 5900x has the advantage of only having six cores per CCX vs the 8 core CCX in the 5800x, and I also have a ton of airflow with a P500A with six 140mm fans, but I also run an RTX 3080 which is like a mini-nuke.

    Jeez, Jay's experience with 12th gen must have scarred him for life. Unless you are dead set against Windows 11, there is NO REASON to not do 12th gen if you are building Intel. For a $1.5k system that isn't pushing absurd RAM speeds, it's been out long enough that it should be reliable.
    Well, Jay's 2020 build guide is what got me into custom building, but even back then I didn't take it as gospel. Do your homework and don't be afraid to tweak for your preferences
    I can find a 5800X3D for $470; not sure where Jay is pulling that $600 tag from. $300 is a weird price point for a CPU; you're spending more than you "need," but not enough to go premium. Also, AMD's "official" spec for their CPUs lists 3200 RAM speed, so I would stick with that (tighten timings if you're willing to spend more). 99.99% chance the 3600 runs just fine, but if you go to expand with a second kit later, higher clockspeed kits are less likely to play nice with each other.

  • @SlamTF2
    @SlamTF2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    This is a great and informative video, but there are a couple of disagreements I have with the philosophy of these builds, especially the AMD build:
    1) There seems to be a bit too much of a focus on RGB. RGB is great, but if you're going $1500 there's a lot more to be had by saving even $75-100 by not focusing on RGB things. Now granted RGB is really fun and cool, and if it's something that makes a person happy then it can be worth it, but you don't need to spend $25-$50 extra for a motherboard with fancy RGB effects or etc if your tower is just gonna be under your desk never being looked at.
    2) There is absolutely no reason to get a 5800x over a 5600x or 5600 non-X if you're just doing gaming and don't care about streaming/video editing (so 95%+ of PC gamers) and don't plan on playing only extremely CPU-demanding games like Cities Skylines. In most non-cpu-intensive games the framerate difference, including 1% lows, is within 1-2%, and if you give the 5600 a modest overclock it'll match the 5800x in almost anything that isn't CPU-bottlenecked. The $100+ saved there gets you super close or right at the budget room to upgrade the GPU to the next step up, which will be a far, far greater FPS bump than the 1% at best the 5800x will give. (Yes, 6 cores will still cut it for a LONG time. There's no reason to believe that 6 cores will become a bottleneck when even brand new AAA non-console-port releases can't use more than 6-8 threads efficiently. Even if it ends up at a 5% performance loss from not having an 8 core, the performance gains from the upgraded GPU will more than offset that.)
    3) Unless there's a big enough sale to bring the price difference within 20-30 dollars, there is very little reason to get a X570 motherboard over a good quality B550 motherboard for the average gamer. At least in my mind there isn't. The average gamer doesn't need multiple gen 4 NVMe drives, they don't need ultra extreme overclocking potential, they don't really care if their motherboard runs 5 degrees hotter, and this is a $1500 budget build so nobody's thinking of SLI/X-Fire (not that anyone actually would with how few games support it anymore.)
    4) 1 TB of storage is NOT enough for modern gaming due to most modern AAA games being 50-100 GB in size, and heck if you're gonna do older games like Skyrim and mod them, you can easily rack up 75-100 GB of space used for just that. I'd try to save 50-100 bucks on the other components and get a second 1TB SSD. Totally fine for MOBA/FPS pros who only play 3 games, but not good enough for people with a large Steam library.
    Please let me know if my thinking is wrong in any of these points, but I definitely feel it's worth saving on some of those components, especially the CPU, to have either a higher GPU budget, or more money left over for games.

      Marginally higher DOAs could be an indicator of future high RMAs? (totally not sure on this one)
      To be honest I am willing to pay extra if a company is willing to give guarantee in contract this machine will not fail until a certain date or else we will compensate your loss + replace the device immediately.

    3070 and lower tier CPU seems to make more sense for gaming. Really confused on the CPUs chosen. 11700K got slammed when it came out so why not 5600X and have enough for the 3070?

      you could go with 12600k and gigabyte b660 gaming x motherboard too. you cant overclock the cpu but it runs pretty good on stock anyway and you get more single core performance, plus 4 efficency cores. i would still go with ddr4. yeah, you could go with ddr5 but there seem to be weird behaviors and so on and it isnt a real benefit for gaming. then you save some money, compared to jays system and would still have better performance. i guess you have to use windows 11 then but ok.

    I disagree with your recommendation of 11th gen. It is better to get a 12th gen with ddr4, and ddr5 doesn’t provide any performance increase over good ddr4 memory. Currently 12th gen can’t even handle DDR5 well with more than two sticks of memory, and it shouldn’t be the reason you go for 12th gen. 11th gen performs worse in most games compared to 10th gen! At that point you might as well get a 10850k and a z490 motherboard if 12th gen isn’t a good choice for you. I would still highly recommend going for 12th gen with a DDR4 motherboard. Also saying that high speed ram is too expensive at around 180 dollars for 3800mhz is wrong. You can get B-Die vipers for around 110 dollars and they provide a massive increase to performance.

      This. All it takes is a single google search to find Z690 DDR4 boards are the same price as Z590 boards, and there are tons of them currently on sale. DDR4 memory is also dirt cheap rn. 12600k is the way to go

    • @PabzRoz
      @PabzRoz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      12700k is only an extra $50 bucks at Microcenter then this 11700k. And you get $20 off when you buy a motherboard as well so it's really only $30 more. Waaaay better performance for just a little extra. Even the 12700 is only $30 more (only $10 with a board). And they have decent Z690 boards from Gigabyte, Asrock, and MSI between $190- $210 and they're DDR4 as well. Or if you went with the 12700 you could get an even cheaper H670 board or whatever. Just makes a lot more sense then this build for the price regardless of DDR5.

    I disagree with you Jay on the multi-core multi-thread issue. We, consumers, need these extra execution units to handle the bloatware that runs on our computers whenever anything is installed. It seems these days all programs need to run in the background whether they need to or not. Even if the main program is not running. The main offender of this problem is Windows itself.

    • @Hypershell
      @Hypershell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, though lower core counts are fine for budget constraints, it is nice to step up.
      Also, I keep hearing you don't need/won't notice more than 16GB of RAM, but when I upgraded to 48, Windows photo viewer ran a lot smoother. Windows having more cache and less compression does make a difference in general use, which gaming benchmarks will not show you. If I was going to spend near $100 on RAM, I would definitely take 32GB of 3200 rather than chase clock specs.

    I would personally try to aim for 1440p gaming at this price point even if it might be pushing it to more performance oriented expences instead of cosmetics...also I would try to save from CPU since 50% increase on price doesnt seem justified....soooo more money to GPU.
    Also for budget gaming even if it would be nice to have good case i would try to get some 60-70 dollar case so I could invest more elsewhere. Same with fans I would rather go for Arctic ones that are awesome value.
    Currently I would try to aim for 6800 XT myself since ray tracing gaming isn't really realistic option on this generation unless you go all out on budget and it can hit nice ~900€ mark while giving increase in performance.
    Still these setups on video are nicely balanced giving ok performance and really nice looking and solid machines that last nice amount of time.

      We are are the point in time where any 6 core can get the job done as well as the 12 cores.
      5600x vs the 5800x only had a 3-5 fps difference on Average, with the biggest difference being on the 0.1% lows
      if i was to build anyone a computer today, def would just go with a 5600x and put that extra saved into a beefier GPU

    I am so envious of these prices, residing in South Africa the 11700k alone is $545.99 on the low end. Insane right!! In fact one would spend: $2554.43 (yes over 2 thousand) on the Intel/Nvidia system... give or take 1 to 2 hundred dollars for the GPU as the exact model is not available here.
    Ya'll have it easy out there.

    As a Corsair 7000D AF owner, if your PSU has intake (and most do now), I strongly recommend you mount it the PSU with the vented side facing down. Otherwise it might overheat. I have a 1000w titanium PSU and have had constant overheating problems and the fans ramping up noisily. But I think switching the fan direction fixed the issue for me!

    No worries about our VATs Jay; most of us know and are quite happy with what our taxes are used for. I have no clue how much difference there is between US states when it comes to taxes, but my friends tell me it can be quite a bit :/ Since I have been going for 1440p gaming builds the past ten years, I have to budget more for €2000 (or $2000 to compensate for exchange & taxes), where I feel I tend to spend closer to 50% on the GPU vs ~35%, but it also feels better for the comp at more budget.. well GPU pricing the last few years obviously breaks anything, but still

    I went for a used parts ebay built about 2 months ago. Overall I got a COMPLETE rig for about 1450€. By complete I mean it includes mouse + keyboard + xxl pad, 31,5" 1440p monitor and a 5.1 soundsystem included.
    The rig I went for was a 5600x, 6700 xt and 32gb 3600mhz RAM. Throwing every game at it lets me play in highest settings on 1440p far above 60 fps ... But I'll say it with caution because newest AAA games do not interest me atm (apart from total war series).
    I'm pretty sure that rig can also stream well.
