If you're curious, a clicker is a little remote that some professors use to quiz students during class. Questions go up on the screen, and you use the clicker to submit your answer. A lot of professors don't actually grade you on your answers; they just use them for attendance.
Thomas Frank I think you can learn from my experience I used to keep a device in my backpack its name is Scan wireless it is a mouse kind of thing that could scan written text and you can edit it also in your computer in MS Word
I'm going to assume that professors are going to turn towards Kahoot in the future since most students have smartphones and it's easier to quiz them on that. Plus, many of us have experience using that site in high school
Small first aid kit and pain meds (ibuprofen and such) is a good thing to carry around, small self-defense item, stapler, sticky-notes as a quick find for paper, additional feminine products in case a fellow person needs help with certain things, lotion, small snacks, throat lozenges during the winter, and just a bunch of other small things like that.
Thought I'd leave you the contents of my girl's backpack here: It looks like a long list but it is detailed and with commentary! Big stuff: 10-compartmentfolder front: important stuff back: scrap paper all other: papers on subjects (as soon as I finish the course I get it out of my srcapbook and in there) novel(always have one with me to read in the bus or pauses) Big Spiral bound notepad(just SOME days. I use it just for a certain kind of courses) big pencil case(if needed! Carrys: pencils, pens of different colors, markers, lipgloss^^) small extra notebook(for personla stuff: dreems, poems, ideas) Big Filofax calendar, spare index cards(for direct creation), current index cards, buisseness cards(my own and other's), paperclips, colercoded filingclips, pencil, 15cm ruler, eraser, those strips to mark passages in books, small bound notebook(my usual) If I want to write on a paper in the library I will carry my thinkpad and chager with me. Small stuff: pack of tissues rain coat for my backpack (Where I live it's to windy for an umbrella) rain coat for myself pack of different pills (which I seldom need and mostly for other people) (for aches, nausea, allergies and my daily prescription if i happen to forget them in the morning) extra pen and a red pen(to mark important stuff/also I am becoming a teacher) keylock (for the library) 2€ coin (for the OTHER library) very small bag of girls stuff! small deodorant lip balm small LED flashlight dice(PnP players always have dice!) Small spoon lighter(I don't smoke but it comes in handy sometimes) phone charger(I use my phone for some classes) Bevrages glass bottle(0,5L) of tap water(it's small and refillable everywhere) 1-2 meals for UNI in Tupperware, glasses or Bento It sounds heavy and yes it is SOMETIMES. The heavy object alsways go as high and near to your back as possible. That is the best main emphasis for a healthy back. Always use both strips. Get a break from carrieng it and sitting around. Take a walk between classes.
I would also recommend carrying a multitool. It doesn't have to be the heaviest duty leatherman you can find, but something with pliers, a few screwdrivers, bottle opener, knife blade, maybe some scissors always comes in handy. I have two calculators because I accidentally forgot one right before an exam so I paid $20 in a campus store for one, so now I have two and lend out the second to people who forget theirs during exams and such. I also carry a mini EDC kit containing a variety of things like a lighter, small first aid kit, paperclips and rubber bands, handkerchief, paracord etc.
+Cody Obropta good additions! I don't carry a multitool in my bag, but I've got one in the glovebox of my car (along with a more complete toolkit in the trunk).
I studied abroad in south east asia for a year and as a result now have a pocket that holds things I always find a use for. In said pocket is : a folding paper fan, chopsticks, deodorant (always a good thing), toothbrush and toothpaste (once a pen exploded in my mouth in the middle of class, I was glad to have it) two pens and two pencils, bandaids etc, superglue (for cuts on spots where bandaids don't work), a small knife, travel power strip, spare change, and headphone/ power cords. I cannot begin to explain how useful ALL of this stuff is.
I'm an animation major, so sketchbooks are always around! I usually have a small sketchbook as a catch-all, and a big one for any art classes. Wacom drawing tablet and stylus is a huge one for me. Besides obviously allowing me to do digital art, I use it to create diagrams in a drawing program for my regular classes since I don't like physical notebooks. Now that my school has switched to using touchscreen computers, I'm also bringing special gear for those. (The computers are Yinova, not Wacom, so it's not compatible with my current gear.) I always have regular pens and pencils, as well as my art pens and a decent eraser. I also usually have some sort of squishy toy for when I get bored in class. It's a lot better to entertain myself with that then browsing Facetwitumblrgram, since my brain is still present in the room. Yes it's weird. But yes it works. (This is especially recommended if you're any sort of neurodivergent- aspie, autism, adhd, add, etc. It's a stim toy.) I keep a cheap set of earbuds in my bag at all times if I need unexpectedly sound (eg. watching video reference during working lab time) and only bring my nice headphones if I'm editing sound or if I'm doing a longer study session.
I just wanted to thank you cause I watched one of your videos yesterday and you said to keep a pad to write distractions on, and I just started using that strategy and it worked wonders!
It's really considerate and kind of adorable that you keep an emergency supply of pens/chargers in case someone else needs them. People like you make life a better place :)
- Macbook Pro retina 13" - Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 - Mousepad - Anker wireless vertical mouse - E-book reader - Etymotic Research headset (much better noise isolation than most other headsets) - USB thumb drive - USB harddrive - Chargers for laptop and mobile phone - Battery pack - Booklets for note taking (A4 and A5) - Fountain pen and pencil - Medicine (pain killers for occasional headache) - Umbrella - Raincoat - Chewing gum - Pocket knife (mostly Victorinox Bantam alox)
Wow, actually me! I'm finishing high school this year as an independent study student and starting college next year, but I'm also learning Japanese and I'm a novice iOS DEVELOPER. Subscribed!!!
I have the same bag and keep the same items but don't you find the bag heavy when you're traveling ? :)) Some extra stuff I carry with me: - extra shirt (I keep it in an iPad bag to keep it from crumpling) - a first-aid bandana (if ever I get in the rare cases when someone gets wounded or sprained I can apply first-aid! Be the hero!) - plastic bag (I fold it nicely so it doesn't take up too much space. Pretty useful when it rains hard and your clothes get wet) - tissue (yeap. And baby wipes when you wanna be extra clean) - alcohol and bottled soap (for ultimate hygiene. Very handy when there's no soap in the restroom)
+Joshua Sapit when I'm traveling there's WAY more stuff in the bag, which is why I also stuff a much smaller backpack in there. I use that one as a day bag once I'm settled at the hostel/AirBnB.
I always travel with spare guitar picks even if I don't bring my guitar. Talking to other musicians (as a musician) is another great way to make friends, especially since guitar picks get lost just as easily (if not more) as pens, so I can lend em out :)
In my Herschel independent backpack, I keep the following in the front pocket: -10ft lightning cable -Android charger for my android homies -Portable charger for on the go charging -Logitech wireless mouse -beats solo 2 On the left side pocket -Bluetooth speaker On the right side pocket -thermos water canister In my big pocket -MacBook Pro for school work -Pencil box with pencils, pencils etc -Multi folder for class papers -5 section notebook for notes not able to be done on my MacBook -iPad Pro for drawing and reading
I keep my laptop Dell xps 13, a spiral notebook, my cellular phone, a portable charger, one folder for each of my classes, 4 colored pens, one pencil, 3 different colored high lighters, a mini stapler, one eraser, 2 lady products, my wallet, plugs for my laptop, 5 paper clips, 5 binder clips and a set of headphones. One time we performed a closing and I prepped it as I would do a professional closing for a home. Yes there were a lot of pages, but you don't normally staple or clip a borrowers package other than with a binder clip or presenting it inside of a yellow envelope. The professor refused to accept my assignment. It was the last day of class. Thank goodness my classmate had a broken zipper and a paper clip in it's place, because I was able to use his. I never was without those again. I was a freshman :)
Awesome video as always! One of the things I have to always keep in my college backpack is toilet paper and hand soap, lol. For everything else, I keep it light: a folder, pencil case, my lunchbox, wallet, water bottle, and for rainy days just my hoodie (need an umbrella, though...)
Two things that I always make sure to have in my bag, in addition to all the standard modern student items, are a spare set of clothes (minus pants) and a first aid/CPR kit, since I'm trained. You never know what's going to happen, and they don't weigh much.
I have a big shoulder bag, easier to carry in crowded places. I keep; a tiny pencil case that includes pens and pencils, a small notebook that i take every note of the classes, the folders of current classes (handouts), wallet, umbrella, some medicine (seriously it is handy), a bottle of water, blank A4 sheets (in case i need to take bigger notes or i also took notes behind handouts), Bible (yes, literally, because I studied it and it was fine to carry around), makeup items (because I had to wear makeup for more than ten hours a day). Except for these, some exams required dictionaries (book type, no electronic) so I ended up carrying 3 encyclopaedic sized dictionaries for a few exams in 3 buses with the distance of 50 km... I think that was it...
I don't have a backpack, though I do have a purse with multiple pockets- one is for school so I have a small ruler and eraseable pens in a small pencil pouch, my planner...I also try to keep Excedrin or something similar in the Personal pocket, along with hair ties and a wall adapter and charging cable and bluetooth headphones.
I make sure I always have a small first aid kit that includes a triangular bandage, gauze, rolled bandage and iodine. I also keep a backup wallet so I can get around if I lose my main one. Lastly, a cap for sun protection.
On my back pack I always keep some paper sheets for writing and drawing. A pencil case for my pens and pencils etc and an extra one for my brush, cutter. Always an umbrella, and a little pocket with hygiene stuff. And my tablet, I have a keyboard with it, it's lighter than my laptop. Sometimes my phone charger and always earphones. And when we do practice course I take a other bag with paint, brush ect and my drawing pocket. I now it's a lot but I don't always need all this stuff.
MlleLiese972 the tablet and keyboard is a great idea if you don't want to lug around a laptop. My roommate actually did this a lot in college because he found that the tablet/keyboard combo was far less distracting, since the tablet couldn't only run one app at a time.
Thomas Frank I bought the cheapest I've found, no game installed for more efficient studies. Even if it the less expensive I found it's okay for studies. And the battery is better than my PC.
Yay for two comments in a row: how cute to see you carrying around an umbrella. Here rain almost always come with really strong winds, and it's almost guaranteed that your umbrella will break. I stopped trying. Now I just get drenched, and dry my glasses when I get to my destination. Rain when it isn't cold outside is very pleasant anyway.
Instead of a hoodie I have a pashmina in my bag (it folds up tiny), and I also keep a small "emergency" kit with band aids, first aid tape, a small sewing kit, headache meds, ginger candy (for nausea), etc.
I always have scrap paper. It's saved me numerous times: - Rip off a piece to take a phone number/jot note - Play games/draw/attempt origami when bored! - Clean up messes on the floor, ish - Kill the stickiness of something after you've taken the price tag off - Pick up gum off shoe or dirt on the floor or makeshift dustpan, etc - Not the best bubble wrap but sometimes it's all you need - rough work because making the essay outline on the back of the paper you plan to write the essay on sucks - I was super desperate once and used it as a tissue. At least I felt better that I could throw it away after but I can't do that with my sleeve.
That intro was BEAUTIFUL!!!! I always get serious edit envy when I watch your videos. I want to grow up and be just like you with my video editing skills : )
Clarissa thanks so much! I'm really glad you liked it - it actually took a good amount of work to figure out. I was pretty happy with how it ended up looking though :) If you're curious, I used the roto brush tool in After Effects to make my arm and the bag cover the text.
I have just pencil case, purse and notebook to write every subjects in there on my bag pack. Your video inspired to think about how to make my bag pack more efficiency. Thanks.
Awesome video as always. My backpack: notebinder, pencil case, snack, water, umbrella, purse w/ money & ID, fully charged phone & earphones cause I try not to use it unless I need to or I'm bored.... :) I keep it light
I don’t even bother with name brand backpacks, I just have a Kmart bag which is perfect for what I need. I’m a skater and I chose it because it have straps that are perfect for a board, and on top of that I can keep more than what I need in it
Just watched this video and was amazed to see that I have the exact same backpack (the Swiss one) and carry almost the exact same items (sans some of the school specific items - I have been out of school quite a few more years than you). The one thing I that is a must for me instead of the strip outlet, I always carry around a cheap 6 ft extension cord (one of those you can buy at the dollar store). I travel quite a bit and it has come in handy numerous times at airports or coffee shops where you may not have the ability to be right next to the outlet.
About the laptop reccomendations, I am studying computing and at first I liked macs. Got the Surface Pro 3 and haven't looked back. I can take notes in lectures with my stylus using Onenote (or Evernote). The keyboard is good and the computer is fast (SSD). So that is a good alternative to macs.
keep a handful of rubber bands. it's so useful for tangle-proofing your cables, keeping things like notebooks or bottles closed, on your finger to turn pages, holding up your pants.... rubber bands
For the starters, I want to appreciate the heavy stuff behind your back! These little things really makes a big difference. On a short note these room decors are just so movey. Keep up the good work!!! :)
That's a far cry from what I used to carry in my backpack at ISU (go Cyclones!) 40 years ago! LOL. Wish I had all that technology back then but I was taking classes on how to create the technology we use now (EE and CprE).
Oh man, thank you for simply mentioning smart phone clicker apps! I recently finished my MS and am becoming a high school science teacher. I loved clickers in college and have been toying with the idea of implementing them in my high school classroom, but I never considered apps for some reason, and that will make the process so much easier! Thank you, thank you, problem solved! :)
I keep a bottle of water, a bunch of pencils, couple of pens, four notebooks for my classes, 13" MacBook Pro , laptop charger, wallet, extra napkins, a snack, loose change, hoodie, pencil sharperner, erasers, a pack of scantrons, car keys, iPhone 5s, earbuds, and a big cup of coffee for my 7am class.
I keep sun glasses, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, first aid stuff, a pair of boxers and socks in a ziplock bag, and enough money in change in case I need to catch a bus. Randomly I also have duct tape and zip strips (the strips have come in handy more than once so far).
I like how he keep and carry his graphing cal everywhere like he really needed it, the Ti 89 limited ed in gray, the most importance historical documents that usually no one keep, what happen when you can't remember where your birth certificate at? At least you still have your cal from back in the day
Great videos as always !!! You should consider making a video regarding your daily eating, such as easy breakfast, lunch, or supper ideas for uni students !
Actually i have a pretty small bag but i'm able to carry around everything i need... Macbook Pro + charger, Ipad (i'm using the goodnotes app and write directly on the powerpoints and stuff), A5 6 rings agenda (yeahhh i still like paper), pencil case, phone, ipod nano, hard drive and a small note book just in case.
You should do a video, if you haven't already, about packing for college. I've seen your college supply list and I'm just wondering how you got it to college and what you brought in your dorm at first etc. Dorms are so small with little storage areas sometimes so it can be tough. What's your advice?
Your videos are very interesting and informative ;all within a decent time span. I might have to stop by your channel to see more videos. Great job and thank you for your tips!
You would probably really enjoy upgrading your notepad to an iPad Pro. I love having all my notes in the same place, whilst being organised. And it’s just an amazing piece of tech :)
Thomas Frank... You are my go to guy and my new FAVORITE youtuber :) I am a female but it is so refreshing to see the guys point of view and you are more like me than any youtuber I've come across tis far.
This video has led me on an internet journey starting from getting a pick four notebook, finding Seth Godin's official product review page on Amazon (he has some neat stuff! I found him on Amazon by searching for the notebook!), and finally sitting down and mapping my engineering career path. Thanks for the quality video!
Hey Thomas Frank! Nice video. The backpack I got was a plain Jansport backpack, and that lasted me from freshman year in high school until now (so 9 years) AND it has a lifetime warranty. It doesn't have any bells and whistles but its a great backpack and it's not too expensive. Would you recommend to students to get a tablet? I found that students were either super into paper notes while others were die-hard note-taking-app-fans. Totally agree with umbrella, totally agree with accordion folder. Even though the cloud is super awesome and infinitely useful, a USB drive is something that I always had. Keep the awesome vids coming!
See now this is good editing. I hate to see this school supply videos that have long intros that don't do anything to help the video and the person is explaining away about their life for 5-6 minutes before the dang supplies ever show up. Keep up the good work!
I keep a 13inch Mac, pens & pencils, two pair or shades (black & brown ), my meds, two lightning cables (they tend to mess up) computer charger, and an extra t-shirt
Scientific calculator, 2 notebooks, two binders, pencil/pen case, Harry Potter book, assignment journal, recreational journal, water bottle, textbook for each class if needed, computer (if needed), and raincoat.
Perfect video as always!! I have this really simple backpack in a pink that hurts everyone's eyes. It's so fun, but it's a 20€ one so I'm always too scared of putting too much into it. That's why I just take pens, a notebook and my books for uni with me, and well yeah my wallet. And never forget an umbrella because you can't know what's going to happen!! (Especially if you live in a place where it rains like every 2 days like me)
Hey, great video :) I´d just like to add that I find it also useful to always keep some tissues, hand cream and an additional plastic bag (for heavy books or a spontaneous grocery shopping) with me. Cheers!
Great list of stuff you keep in your bag. Mines pretty much the same except add a calculator, sunnies and sunscreen (since Aussie sun will kill you... that is if the 72 deadly animals that live here don't get you first...). I just wish more text books would come in a PDF version. Doing a double degree Mechanical Engineering and Japanese and these both have massive heavy textbooks and workbooks and often I have to bring 3+ books and my laptop to uni. Not great when you're a skinny girl who doesn't have enough time to go to gym and lift (though I think my uni bag is enough workout). Thanks for all your videos by the way, you're helping me get much more organised so I might actually have time to play on my new shiny consoles (got PS4 and getting Xbox1 for halo 5) and not just say goodnight to them as I pass out after a big day. Keep up the good work!
first video i see of you, took 1:25 to subscribe, i love the way you honestly said here : im not a laptop expert, but i can link you stuff. Love the honest here man, well done !
AquaSimmer I'm not sure how soon I'll get to a video on this, but as ***** mentioned, the backpack you use matters. If you get one with good should support (and maybe even waist support), that'll help a lot. The Minaal actually has double anchor points on each strap near the top, which helps when the bag is heavy. Ruck bags have other support features. Another thing you can do is stuff your hoodie at the bottom; that solves the problem of the heavy stuff sinking down and hurting your lower back.
+AquaSimmer I use a Jansport Driver 8 bag. I love it. I have used it all throughout my school semester for the past 4 years. I take 4-6 classes at a time, and the books can get quite heavy. When I was in my legal classes, the law books are the size of the huge house bricks and weight about that much, so I invested $129 into a bag that is quality. I never have sore shoulders or hurt arms. It fits a lot inside, and it rolls. :)
Hey Thomas, I found your channel about October 2016 and this would be the first video of yours I am commenting to. BTW I like your channel it is amazing. You wanted to know what people keep in their backpacks. I am a software developer so my backpack is a massive lifesaver. Beats the laptop bags by far. I carry the following: Work Laptop, Charger for said laptop, Wireless Mouse and the little USB bit for it, Two 33.8oz bottles of water (I drink a lot of water), two notebooks (one for work related information and another for personal tidbits), a book of some sort -- currently it is a book on organizing one's work space/life in a year, a micro USB with wall adapter because I am an Android user, And also a tablet... Because I can. I also carry food items, silverware, gym clothes, umbrella...
Subbed!! I just got a new backpack for going back to college this Autumn, so I'm doing the rounds of these types of videos - this was by far one of my favourites, thanks!!
*Checks backpack* Cellphone, I don't carry a charger since I don't really use my cellphone that much. When I know I'll need it, laptop and its charger. A huge binder where I keep the notes of all my classes. A scientific calculator. A little book that's a very complete unit converter chart. Lady hygiene stuff. A pencil case that's actually a handbag way too filled with stuff because I used to doodle a lot in classes, and because I keep a bit of makeup there too. I used to carry around a sketchbook for said doodles. And water and food/snacks, because I fail to function properly if I don't eat something every couple of hours, and I'm constantly sipping water. Also, I use a backpack with wheels. Here at least that's seen as something that only elementary students use, but it's been a huge relief on my damaged back. People used to make fun of me, but now they're used to it, and they're the ones whose shoulders are always in pain. :P
I always like having a water bottle in my backpack, as well as hair bands and hair brush just in case something happens. I also like to have a dictionary handy, since in language classes such as english and french, they don't let you use your phone.
I have no computer and therefore no cables. But alway water and a long-lasting snack (energybar, chocolate, dry fruit...), sunglasses. For classes also an a5-notebook and a recording device. For tutoring the sign in sheet, a calculator and the folder with the subject/class. But I really need to step up my game with business cards!
I sometimes keep my throwing knife there (mainly when I'm carrying more money) at times I also keep some basic lock picks (basically because they take up no space and I have some friends that often forget their keys and ask me to pick their locks so they wouldn't need to call a locksmith) nothing else that's too interesting
I have to have a chapstick, clear aloe gel (many uses from sunburn to emergency hair gel) and gum or breath mint in my backpack. great video by the way!
Btw, can you make a video for example what's important to take for school! WHich are the most important stuff. Because there are some moments in which you bag goes very heavy and it's like you have on your back rocks? However, also can you make a video about which are the most useful stuff for smart phone? I'm very curious which is more easy the paperback or the kindle format books, because there are some cases in which you want to read, but you can't because your eyes have changed to read, not full read. But some places there are red and it hurts... maybe it's kind a stupid question, but is there some kind a option in which you can reduce this to hurt by using one of this devices??? Or in other words how to make it usable to be usable in day and in night and in the same time to don't hurt your eyes? The moo site is very nice one, I just check out it now! Btw, I think that it will be awesome to make a video and share what's the most important stuff in school in which are aren't!
So, throughout hight school I was known as "Staples" because I literally had everything that anyone would ever need and more in my pensil case... pens, pencils, a single hole punch, small stapler, charger cord, white out, various sizes of pensil led, USB, erasser, paper clips, and a small thing of Advil. I may have downgraded since then because my 7 year old pencil case died and I could only find the small version of it, but I shall continue to look for a replacement XP
Wow! That's the first video I see from your channel and I already love you and how informative and helpful it was for me! Congrats, totally worth it my subscription (:
Thanks Thom for making videos, it helps a lot specially when your studying while working here in Japan... God Bless you more!!! and Good luck in your school'n....
I have the exact same backpack as you! Swiss! I can testify also that this thing is freaking solid. Have had it for I dont even know how many years. At least 4? 5? Still in brand new condition. Without question one of the best backpacks I have ever owned and will likely not be buying another backpack for at least a good decade? This is the one to get guys! :D
I don't know the exact name. It's from swiss though. Exact same one as in the vid, and he gives the full name I think. He got it from best buy, I got mine on the navy base if I remember right years ago when I was still in the navy. Thats how I know ive had it for around 5 years. been out for a few, might even be 6 years now that ive had this thing actually, lol. Just head to best buy, exact same as in the video and I literally paused the video, grabbed my backpack and compared. Yeap. Same exact backpack to the smallest detail. You wont reget buying this thing I promise you that. In the navy, this thing was my tech/entertainment backpack. Now its back to a school backpack, lol. :)
mollerbt haha yep! It's a tank. The only reason I bought the Minaal is because it's so good for travel. I tried fitting everything I needed for Japan into the Swiss and it just didn't work well. That being said, the Minaal actually isn't super great for just going to the coffee shop because it's quite flimsy when it isn't stuffed full.
Thomas Frank I currently have this huge all black backpack that I got from one of the naval bases I was stationed at. Much larger then the swiss, but maybe a little smaller then your big thing and no clamshell. Still, Ive used it before for packing instead of a suitcase when traveling. I can't help but wonder if it would be large enough for your needs, lol. Not flmsy when empty. Just a huge freaking backpack. XD
Thank you -- I have been using your videos to teach my kids they are great. The one thing they have in addition is their Bible. Always good to carry one.
I think you can learn from my experience I used to keep a device in my backpack its name is Scan wireless it is a mouse kind of thing that could scan written text and you can edit it also in your computer in MS Word
I keep Two MacBook Pro in my bag in case someone needs a computer, 6 Paper folder, 1 Anker Power bank, 2 Lighting Cable, 2 USB-C cables for my MacBook, 2TB Hardrive, A lot of adapters for my computer, a Organizer Board to keep my bag clean, an iPad Pro for notes, a Apple Pencil for Writing Stuf, BeatsX, Solo3, and a boss Speaker.
Hey Thomas, I wonder if you could make a video regarding dieting in college ? I know is difficult to get all of the following, but it would be really cool if you could factor in students with low budgets, work part time, attend school full time, and worst of all don't know too many recipes (I'm describing myself here lol). For those of you who want similar information about college dieting can use the following link: www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/10/18/a-college-guide-to-eating-healthy/. It seems that Thomas wrote it as a guest blog for Nerdfitness. Would just be nice to also have a video and your updated tips.
OMG, me too. but i hava a different reason, because i don't like smokers, so i would not lend it them. I am carring it because, have you ever seen Doctor Who? So many times Rory needed lighter and he had it. So it's a good thing, i think.
Hey Tom. These videos are really good and inspirational. I heard in one of your earlier videos that you post blogs? This is something I would really like to get into; could you post a video about it?
I'm procrastinating by watching videos about productivity.
I think I just broke the laws of physics.
+Jake Whitton ditto
me too :'(
that's my problem. If not youtube i could have become a great developer. byt backpack reviews. How can you skip it?
Jake Whitton lol i would relate good thing im not going to school anymore 😉
Jake Whitton i love your videos and i almost watched all of your videos you are very cool and very smart i want to be like you smart and cool
I just love how you care for random people, like having extra pen for others or a charger. You are so kind :)
If you're curious, a clicker is a little remote that some professors use to quiz students during class. Questions go up on the screen, and you use the clicker to submit your answer. A lot of professors don't actually grade you on your answers; they just use them for attendance.
Thomas Frank How to be you sir?
Yes , +Tayvin Chantipaporn it's really cool.
Your one piece sticker is amazing
Small first aid kit and pain meds (ibuprofen and such) is a good thing to carry around, small self-defense item, stapler, sticky-notes as a quick find for paper, additional feminine products in case a fellow person needs help with certain things, lotion, small snacks, throat lozenges during the winter, and just a bunch of other small things like that.
I subscribed right after you said okay.
Thought I'd leave you the contents of my girl's backpack here:
It looks like a long list but it is detailed and with commentary!

small extra notebook(for personla stuff: dreems, poems, ideas)
Big Filofax

pack of different pills (which I seldom need and mostly for other people)
(for aches, nausea, allergies and my daily prescription if i happen to forget them in the morning)
extra pen and a red pen(to mark important stuff/also I am becoming a teacher)
keylock (for the library)
2€ coin (for the OTHER library)
very small bag of girls stuff!
small deodorant
lip balm
small LED flashlight
dice(PnP players always have dice!)
Small spoon
lighter(I don't smoke but it comes in handy sometimes)
phone charger(I use my phone for some classes)
Bevrages
glass bottle(0,5L) of tap water(it's small and refillable everywhere)
1-2 meals for UNI in Tupperware, glasses or Bento
It sounds heavy and yes it is SOMETIMES.
The heavy object alsways go as high and near to your back as possible. That is the best main emphasis for a healthy back. Always use both strips. Get a break from carrieng it and sitting around. Take a walk between classes.
+Das Hexxchen haha, nice!
Das Hexxchen wow , so organized
A spoon?
Ur bag must be heavy :o
I'm an animation major, so sketchbooks are always around! I usually have a small sketchbook as a catch-all, and a big one for any art classes.
Wacom drawing tablet and stylus is a huge one for me. Besides obviously allowing me to do digital art, I use it to create diagrams in a drawing program for my regular classes since I don't like physical notebooks. Now that my school has switched to using touchscreen computers, I'm also bringing special gear for those. (The computers are Yinova, not Wacom, so it's not compatible with my current gear.)
I always have regular pens and pencils, as well as my art pens and a decent eraser.
It's a stim toy.)
I keep a cheap set of earbuds in my bag at all times if I need unexpectedly sound (eg. watching video reference during working lab time) and only bring my nice headphones if I'm editing sound or if I'm doing a longer study session.
- Macbook Pro retina 13"
- Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2
- Mousepad
- Anker wireless vertical mouse
- E-book reader
- Etymotic Research headset (much better noise isolation than most other headsets)
- USB thumb drive
- USB harddrive
- Chargers for laptop and mobile phone
- Battery pack
- Booklets for note taking (A4 and A5)
- Fountain pen and pencil
- Medicine (pain killers for occasional headache)
- Umbrella
- Raincoat
- Chewing gum
- Pocket knife (mostly Victorinox Bantam alox)
Wow, actually me! I'm finishing high school this year as an independent study student and starting college next year, but I'm also learning Japanese and I'm a novice iOS DEVELOPER. Subscribed!!!
I have the same bag and keep the same items but don't you find the bag heavy when you're traveling ? :))
Some extra stuff I carry with me:
- extra shirt (I keep it in an iPad bag to keep it from crumpling)
- a first-aid bandana (if ever I get in the rare cases when someone gets wounded or sprained I can apply first-aid! Be the hero!)
- plastic bag (I fold it nicely so it doesn't take up too much space. Pretty useful when it rains hard and your clothes get wet)
- tissue (yeap. And baby wipes when you wanna be extra clean)
- alcohol and bottled soap (for ultimate hygiene. Very handy when there's no soap in the restroom)
+Joshua Sapit when I'm traveling there's WAY more stuff in the bag, which is why I also stuff a much smaller backpack in there. I use that one as a day bag once I'm settled at the hostel/AirBnB.
Lol, if some Chinese old lady saw you open your umbrella inside the house. XD
right, because of my mom i get panicked every time i see someone do that lol
Why is that so ackward?
Esteban Menchaca Superstition in some cultures believes it's bad luck
Same here! Stuff you only learn when you grown up in an asian fam.
That's absurd. If someone opens an umbrella in the premises, it just means that the person opens an umbrella in the premises. Nothing supernatural.
I always travel with spare guitar picks even if I don't bring my guitar. Talking to other musicians (as a musician) is another great way to make friends, especially since guitar picks get lost just as easily (if not more) as pens, so I can lend em out :)
In my Herschel independent backpack, I keep the following in the front pocket:
-10ft lightning cable
-Android charger for my android homies
-Portable charger for on the go charging
-Logitech wireless mouse
-beats solo 2
On the left side pocket
-Bluetooth speaker
On the right side pocket
-thermos water canister
In my big pocket
-MacBook Pro for school work
-Pencil box with pencils, pencils etc
-Multi folder for class papers
-5 section notebook for notes not able to be done on my MacBook
-iPad Pro for drawing and reading
Uni is coming in two weeks and I'm very excited for it now that I have watched your videos, thank you Thomas!
I forgot to write the charging cable I carry for my phone and the peppermint sugar.
Awesome video! I always bring a knife and a flash light in my bag/purse. They both are very convenient in numerous occasions.
Instead of a hoodie I have a pashmina in my bag (it folds up tiny), and I also keep a small "emergency" kit with band aids, first aid tape, a small sewing kit, headache meds, ginger candy (for nausea), etc.
I always have scrap paper. It's saved me numerous times:
- Rip off a piece to take a phone number/jot note
- Play games/draw/attempt origami when bored!
- Clean up messes on the floor, ish
- Kill the stickiness of something after you've taken the price tag off
- Pick up gum off shoe or dirt on the floor or makeshift dustpan, etc
- Not the best bubble wrap but sometimes it's all you need
- rough work because making the essay outline on the back of the paper you plan to write the essay on sucks
- I was super desperate once and used it as a tissue.
I was pretty happy with how it ended up looking though :)
If you're curious, I used the roto brush tool in After Effects to make my arm and the bag cover the text.
I have just pencil case, purse and notebook to write every subjects in there on my bag pack. Your video inspired to think about how to make my bag pack more efficiency. Thanks.
** in my bag pack (miss grammar)
Awesome video as always. My backpack: notebinder, pencil case, snack, water, umbrella, purse w/ money & ID, fully charged phone & earphones cause I try not to use it unless I need to or I'm bored.... :) I keep it light
Maybe you should go through using a pick four notebook more so that we can try and emulate the method without spending $90.
I have 2 JanSport backpacks and they are guaranteed for life. I've taken them up on that twice and they came through both times.
Pens, binder for each class, and then calendar to write down when assignments are due.
Same bag lol. Had mine for about 7 years now. Works great with plenty of room.
Where did you get that one piece sticker on your Mac air, it's beautiful
Hey Thomas, just read your first e-book on college tips. Really appreciated your insights !!!
I always keep my planner/calendar in my backpack.. And also band-aids. Never know when you might need one of those (bloody papercuts).
If you are a female, always have feminine hygiene products in your bag just case of an accident.
Raven M. Evans like a tampon hehehe
TruthlyRage Pervert.
I guess it's just great to know that I'm not the only one who stuffs my backpack with so many things. AND YES I NEED ALL OF THEM
Scientific calculator, 2 notebooks, two binders, pencil/pen case, Harry Potter book, assignment journal, recreational journal, water bottle, textbook for each class if needed, computer (if needed), and raincoat.
3:15 I love the portrait orientation of the business cards.
Thanks +Thomas for this video
first video i see of you, took 1:25 to subscribe, i love the way you honestly said here : im not a laptop expert, but i can link you stuff. Love the honest here man, well done !
Can you make a video on how to organize your backpack so its not so heavy carrying more than one class? 💙💙
***** I do that now but it still seems heavy.
***** haha I just bought a gaming computer so I don't know about light lol
AquaSimmer I'm not sure how soon I'll get to a video on this, but as ***** mentioned, the backpack you use matters. If you get one with good should support (and maybe even waist support), that'll help a lot. The Minaal actually has double anchor points on each strap near the top, which helps when the bag is heavy. Ruck bags have other support features.
Another thing you can do is stuff your hoodie at the bottom; that solves the problem of the heavy stuff sinking down and hurting your lower back.
Thomas Frank Yea okay. I have two different ones and they both hurt. I have classes back to back so
+AquaSimmer I use a Jansport Driver 8 bag.
I sometimes keep my throwing knife there (mainly when I'm carrying more money)
at times I also keep some basic lock picks (basically because they take up no space and I have some friends that often forget their keys and ask me to pick their locks so they wouldn't need to call a locksmith)
nothing else that's too interesting
Btw, I think that it will be awesome to make a video and share what's the most important stuff in school in which are aren't!
highlighters and chargers for labtop and phone soo needed
You really inspire me to challenge my self in college. Thank you so much for all of your advice. I have learned a lot from you.
mollerbt whats the name and company of the backpack
Hmm, what I keep in my backpack? Well, the usual stuff..books, pens, unicorn, laptop, grandma..
Happyman I'm just picturing this tiny grandma riding around in your backpack, giving you unwanted advice while you walk to class :P
I would have guessed in a million years that you were a student, because you are so wise beyond your years😄
I think you can learn from my experience I used to keep a device in my backpack its name is Scan wireless it is a mouse kind of thing that could scan written text and you can edit it also in your computer in MS Word
I hope someone at class also brings extra chargers because they actually cared. Ur soul is beautiful dude.😢🌹
Honestly, this video motivates me to be an organised minded student. dope!
2/10; didn't pack a towel.
DON'T PANIC
My backpack well... IV cannula, disposable gloves, antiseptic gel, mask for resuscitation, pneknife, needle with thread, flashdrive,
So you are doing cardio when you are wearing that backpack. That's some next level efficiency and productivity.
I'm sorry to ask, but what did Thomas study in University? :D
AllNightAllen Management Information Systems, IIRC.
ThinkBig500 Thank you ! xD
ThinkBig500 yes indeed
Thomas Frank thanks for the amazing videos !
Hey Thomas,
I wonder if you could make a video regarding dieting in college ? I know is difficult to get all of the following, but it would be really cool if you could factor in students with low budgets, work part time, attend school full time, and worst of all don't know too many recipes (I'm describing myself here lol).
For those of you who want similar information about college dieting can use the following link: www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/10/18/a-college-guide-to-eating-healthy/. It seems that Thomas wrote it as a guest blog for Nerdfitness. Would just be nice to also have a video and your updated tips.
Finally. A TH-camr that still presses pen into paper. My buddy.
I find useful to have a lighter in my backpack. I don't smoke but curiously a lot of smokers come up to me to see if I can lend them one.
OMG, me too. but i hava a different reason, because i don't like smokers, so i would not lend it them. I am carring it because, have you ever seen Doctor Who? So many times Rory needed lighter and he had it. So it's a good thing, i think.
I really love your stuff watching again and again thomas
Hi Thomas! Love your vids! Is it possible to make a video on best way on how to organize school board for teaching language purposes?
Hey Tom. These videos are really good and inspirational. I heard in one of your earlier videos that you post blogs? This is something I would really like to get into; could you post a video about it?
