I love these straight to the point videos. I have one just like it with two double 15-inch they pound your chest with the Yamaha receiver.

You should set your crossover at 80hz to let your sub handle all the low bass sound and give you a balanced sound overall. Setting the crossover at 100hz will make your sub overpower the rest of the equipment which will result in an imbalanced sound. Also, you should always set the crossover setting on the AV receiver. On the sub, dial the crossover knob to max.
Also, set all your speakers to Small. This receiver is entry-level and doesn’t have all that power to drive a Large setting. What this setting means is that the AV receiver will try to direct more power to the front speakers, more power that it essentially doesnt have to begin with. Setting it to Large will result in an imbalanced sound to the surround speakers.

Hey Don, i just picked up the Yamaha RX-V685 7.2 , should i still select small on the speakers configuration? I am running a 3 channel setup with Polk s55,s and a Klipsch - Reference Series Quad 3-1/2" 400-Watt Passive 2-Way Center-Channel Speaker.

If you are you using a sub alway set the speakers to small even if you are using towers. It changes the sound. Now you can play at very high volume . Set the av crossover to the speakers rolls off . Thanks for the quick review

So, I have this AV receiver and one thing that is confusing and confounding me, when I set the receiver to 'surround' rather than 'bi-amp' I cannot hear the speakers that are connected to the surround terminals. The only way I can hear anything out of those speakers is if the amp 'config' is set to bi-amp, but then I lose any control over the surround speakers.
Even if I set to 'surround' and go into the Level menu and change the levels for the surround, still get no sound out of them.
Is there some other setting I need to make in this AV receiver? It's really annoying me immensely!!

Thanks for the review. This unit can also output to bluetooth headphones and speakers simultaneously. Have you tried this? If yes, is there any lag between the speakers and headphones? I'm looking for a solution where one person prefers headphones and the other prefers speakers while watching the same movie. But if there is lag it's annoying for the one wearing headphones. Thanks!

I'm new to home audio receivers. Does this have a stereo mode that will prevent the center channel speaker and rear surround speakers from playing while I have my turntable playing? For example, I'd like to have all 5 speakers on for TV/movies but for when i want to listen to my vinyls, I'd like to just have the sound run through left and right speaker only? Is that an option? Thanks

My personal opinion the device is realy great. But be careful with the autostanby option. It elicits some paranoid feelings after the reciever goes turned off without your command.
Also make sure nothing is influencing your device from outside as, for example, the moronic neighbour with the IR or BT remote control in his sweaty hands.
Sound impressions - even better than with the predecessor- YAMAHA rx-v463 model. Settings usability is great! Especially through the HDMI out port.
Manual reference support is more than enough to set it up and find information on every tiny button and hidden LED on the front panel. Just click the link and download the manual corresponded.
There is one thing I whant to figure out - the min AC voltage the receiver is able to work at. It has the linear power supply with the big transormer and it shouldn't realy work with the voltage less than 200 Volts. Active PFC is not suplemented for the audio devices as the pulse control causes a lot of sound distortion and noise. And I curious what voltage range is viable for the normal device operation.
One more detail has impressed me - the sound quality from the USB source when I began listening to some mp3 (from my collection). Sound I heard was clean and ringy, full of details and subdetails with the deap bass. I had much less MP3 sound quality with my old aforementioned receiver.
