  • In this video I fabricate the engine jig, and mount the engine to it. Then I service the engine, hook up and start the RD125 Yamaha. This is the engine that I want to build to run for the land speed record at Bonneville salt flats. Not sure if I will get this done, but this is the first step.

I can't believe it first push with a hand crank and she fired up. Incredible. I love it

Yeah, they are sweet little engines and not a lot of compression, so if they are set up good, they start easy.

Firing up in the first kick was a pleasant surprise!! Sounds great.

That is a BEAST. I was looking at an RD350, but after seeing this 125, dunno if I could handle that much power.

Where do you get parts from because in the uk certain parts you will not find any more.
    I have a yamaha rd125 with a destroyed engine,
    No carbs,
But with the deal came a rd200 engine, virtually identical,
Yet no Carburetors and it appears like gold dust,
So currently I am going to use suzuki gt185 on the rd200 engine,
Although someone said that the gt185 Carburetors are 22 mm that's correct but only if you measured inside lol,
I've got to mill around 3 mm off so they will push fit into the reed block rubber connectors which inside diameter is 22mm,
But it would have been so much easier if I could have found the rd200 Carburetors,
The whole bike was taken apart 30 years ago by previous owner who moved 3 times and had a family so you can imagine little things missing like odd nuts and bolts
Another part that was missing was a swingarm spindle pivot, can I find the correct one NOPE, But generally 90% of the bike is there just in pieces lol,
The original project cost £400 and I reckon the total cost will be around £1000 including buying it ,
    So 3 things missing,
    Carburetors rd200
    Swingarm spindle pivot
    Exhaust mufflers, I have downpipes
Love the videos and I wish I had your workshop,
I was born in the sixties so these are the bikes I grew up with including the now incredibly expensive yamaha Fizzys 50cc
In the UK all the type bike you have are fetching thousands in the UK 🇬🇧, and serval thousand for ones that need stripping and rebuilding (overhaul)
So I find myself fortunate to have found my yamaha rd twin 125 for what little I paid for it,
The goal is to use it back on the uk roads and keep it,

Hi there, yes, I feel your frustration. Those little twin Yamaha's are getting hard to find parts for. For the most part I watch Ebay or hit up one of my local salvage yards. (Bikeboneyard.com) But I have found that most of the NOS parts come out of Indonesia. They seem to still be riding a lot of these bikes on the road over there. Shipping was a little scary at first, but I have never had a bad experience. I have had other folks from the UK tell me that these bikes fetch a lot of coin these days, and a lot of them have just rusted into the ground. I am very lucky to live where I am, because we are a high desert climate, and it is very dry here and the bikes and cars do really well sitting outside for a long time. I hope I have helped a bit. I do know how hard it is to find parts. It really isn't going to get any better, probably worse as time goes on. I wish you well on your hunt for the parts required to get your machine back in order. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me.

I look forward to seeing this project out Dale, I have a soft spot for all Yamaha two stroke twins. I’m currently reading a great book about the history of Yamahas two stroke production road racers, very interesting stuff to me.
What’s the story behind that old ford? I’ve been meaning to ask for a while now. It’s a pretty car.

Hi Daniel, yes me too, the Yamaha twins are and will be for ever cool. This will be a very neat project, just hope I can pull it off. Will be a lot of first's for me. Frame builder, twin modifier, land speed racer...wow seams way bigger than I have ever done. Lots of research to do. Not to mention cost, did you know it cost 550.00 just to run Bonneville. Wow! Sounds like a very interesting book, I find myself watching and reading a lot about motorcycle racing history. It is indeed interesting. Thanks for hanging out with me in the shop.

Oh forgot the old car question. It is a 68 Ford Torino coupe with a 69 ranchero grille. The power train is out of a 1988 Mercury, 5.0 EFI engine with AOD overdrive transmission. It is still in work, still need to finish up the foot feet, and shifter along with the seat covers and dash pad. It runs and sounds good. Just lost interest and prefer to work on motorcycles. I do at times do some to it. Just need to buckle down and finish her up.
