If there was an LDS MVP, A-Rod would have been this series’ choice

Gardy letting Joe Nathan pitch a third inning in game 2 was maybe the biggest mistake he ever made.

The Yankees and Twins square off in the ALDS for the 2nd straight season. The Yankees (101-61, AL East winners by 3 games) knocked out Minnesota (92-70, AL Central champions by 8 games) in 4 games. But the Twins look to Johan Santana as their trump card.
In Game 1 at the Bronx, Santana pitched seven shutout innings. While he did allow baserunners aplenty, he was aided by five double plays. Jacque Jones' home run was all Santana needed as the Twins took the opener, 2-0.
Then, in Game 2, the Twins scored two in the 8th to tie the game at 5-5. However, Corey Koskie's RBI double was a ground rule one that otherwise would've put the Twins ahead. Still tied in the 12th, Torii Hunter went deep to put MIN ahead, 6-5. Two more outs, and the Twins will go home up 2-0 in games. But Joe Nathan, in his third inning of work, walked two batters. Then, A-Rod got his 4th hit of the game on an RBI double that also was a ground-rule one. After an intentional walk, Matsui drove in the game winner with a sacrifice fly and a 7-6 Yankees' win.
Tied at 1, the Yankees rode the momentum to an easy 8-4 win in Game 3 at the Metrodome as Jeter and Matsui each had three hits to aid Kevin Brown, who allowed only one run in 6 innings.
In Game 4, Santana allowed only one run in 5 innings of work on three days' rest. The Twins jumped to a 5-1 lead. It stayed that way into the 8th, where the Yankees scored a run. Then, with two on, Ruben Sierra took Juan Rincon deep to even the game and quiet the decibel level. In the 11th, A-Rod doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5 Yankees. Mariano Rivera, in his 2nd inning, shut out MIN 1-2-3 to win the series 3 games to 1.
And the much-anticipated (or pre-determined) ALCS was set: Yankees and Red Sox will square off once again. Better put the coffee on as well as the boxing gloves.

7:25 Terrible break for the Twins, as that pitch went to a ground rule double. That would have given the Twins the lead with Nathan not having to pitch so many innings in game 2.
Yankees will have a similar terrible ground rule double break in the ALCS game 5 in Fenway with Tony Clark hitting.
Twins also had a similar terrible break in the 2009 ALDS in Yankee Stadium 3, closely similar to this.
      - This is what MLB needed = to have AROD playing meaningful September games and postseason games, after being somewhat forgotten in 2001-2002-2003.
      - One thing about the Yankees during their Division Series era of 1995-2004, is that they hit MANY CLUTCH HOME RUNS in the postseason. In this Division Series, Ruben Sierra with the clutch home run in game 4.

And the Yankees domination of the Twins in the postseason continues:

Arod was literally raking in the postseason with the Yanks up until game 5 of the 04 ALCS. In game 4 he hit the two run shot to put the yanks of 2-0 in that game. I remember literally thinking, this is awesome. All that money was well worth spent and the Yanks are about to sweep the Red Sox. Boy was I freaking wrong lmao. Arod literally disappeared game 5 of the 04 ALCS until 2009 lol

I say this all the time. A lot of people don't believe it when you tell them that not only was A-Rod a good postseason hitter prior to Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS, but he was a CLUTCH player as well. Even with Seattle he had good playoff runs, including one against the Yankees. In this series alone he was robbed of a go-ahead home run in Game 1, got three big hits in Game 2 and got the big hit and stolen base that iced the series in Game 4. I was thinking the same thing as a kid at the time, this guy is going to be amazing for us. The first 4 games of the ALCS made the trade look even better, then the bottom inexplicably fell out.

The Twins homefield advantage only works when they are in the World Series and during the regular season.
Twins are 11-1 in World Series home games, with their only loss coming against Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers in game 7 of the 1965 World Series, when Koufax threw a complete-game-shut-out-gem with 10 strikeouts on 2 days rest.

The game 2 loss still hurts neatly 20 years later. If the Twins win that game they would have had a good chance to close out at home. Although the Red Sox/Yankees ALCS in 2004 was memorable with the 0-3 comeback one wonders what the Twins could have done against Boston.
