    Uncharted 4 was originally announced with a teaser trailer in November 2013. In March 2014, Amy Hennig left the developer Naughty Dog, followed by other noteworthy names like Justin Richmond, Taylor Kurosaki and others. Jason Schreier from Kotaku has published his book "Blood, Sweat and Pixels" in which he interviews some of the people related to the matter. So here are all the detail. From scrapped gameplay demo moments to Sam and Rafe's original roles, here is everything you should know!

Let me know how you feel about this original direction, and if you think you'd prefer it to what we have now. As much as I loved the game and it's story, the concept of Sam actually being a main villain until they heal their relationship and work together actually sounds a bit more intriguing to me.
      I still enjoyed the story and think 4's story was one of the most interesting ones.

      Naughty Dog was too afraid of killing off meaningful characters and the story started off very well and the situation got worse and worse and Drake was a douche and then it all magically worked out and everyone lived happily ever after... And people still call it a masterpiece... Uncharted 4 was good, but miles away form a masterpiece... And the climbing is also boring, just like the climbing in AC and new Tomb Raider games, because of the painted ledges that make climbing sequences so brainlessly easy. It's the perfect game for game critics. Amazing graphics and cinematic spectacle, great acting and easy to play, brainless puzzles...

      Ninja Warrior Didn't seem as dangerous as Rafe and Nadine, Shoreline soldiers. He's just a drug lord with regular gang members as his henchmen. Probably similar to Lazaravic with the whole obsession over the treasure/artifact stuff, psychopathic as well. But I liked his scene in the prison.

    The problem with that original idea of Sam and Nate joining together near the end of the game is that there would be no time for the player to become attached to Sam or even care about him at all. The final U4 works because it allows us to get to know Sam and like him just as much as the other heroes in the series.

    • @rebecca3846
      @rebecca3846 7 ปีที่แล้ว +136

      If Sam was given enough screen time as an interesting, complex villain I think this would have been great for the series. All uncharted antagonists are pretty cliche and similar. And if the player sympathised with Sam's motives as the villain then it would have been satisfying to see him change sides and team up with Nate at the end. At least, I think so anyway x)

    sam actually would have been a great villain and great narrative for a thief's end. also having him have no weapons for almost half the game would have been interesting. Nathan is changing as a person and becoming more of a family man so it would be good character development. I get its a game but I've always seen some games as interactive movies, especially this one. the whole world Nathans in is full of thieves and backstabbing. seeing these "twist" would definitely make some memorable moments. the game is still great but it would have been interesting to see Amy Hennings story.

    I felt like some story decisions were terrible, the whole Nadine character was basicaly useless to the plot and only for female empowering (I can buy she kicks retired Nate butt, but not effortlessly and certainly not when the Drake brothers team up) , also the fact that Hector Alcazar was not the real villain really disappointed me, rafe was just so... weak. My favorite is still Lazarovitch from U2. I do confess that having Sam as an ally was a change for the best.

      Agree with everything you said. Nadine was completely unlikeable. The game tries to make you feel empathetic for her by giving you her backstory but it fails miserably and you don't even care a bit about her. Like you said, she added nothing to the plot, nor did she change anything, she was completely irrelevant and could have been swapped out for some generic militia commander. The Alcazer prison escape scene also felt like a waste of time, knowing that it never happened and that it also had no effect on the plot.

    Very interesting indeed to hear what the original U4 story would've been. Although U4 is the best uncharted game imo, and a masterpiece in a lot of ways, the character of Sam and how he's written always hurt the game for me a bit, there's something off about him for me. I really think the original Hennig approach makes a lot more sense and would've been more captivating. In the final game Sam still has a dark side I guess, and a tragic past with him rotting away in prison for years, and he lies to Nate for the majority of the game, but ultimately he is just forced upon us as a likable, charming fairly generic Troy Baker character, like he is in so many games (I like Troy though, but Sam is in the Delsin, Talion category for me; fine, but a bit one-sided). This becomes only more evident in the lost legacy, were Sam is diminished to a underdeveloped comical relief goof. Don't get me wrong, a badly written character in U4 is still better than most game characters, but since Sam is such a big part of U4's story, I think it did have more potential in that aspect.

    • @pigs18
      @pigs18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

  • @Cra5hOverride
    @Cra5hOverride 6 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    There would've been a way to fix the ending without making Sam evil. Here's how...
    Throughout the whole game, the narrative reinforces the message that whoever pursues the treasure will end up dead. Not only do we have the unfolding story of the pirates of Libertalia, who become so consumed with the treasure that they're prepared to kill each other for it, but we also have Elena and Sully constantly reminding Nate that he can't do this forever and that one day his luck will run out. But the ending goes against that and says that if you're Nathan Drake, that doesn't apply to you. My other issue with the ending is that Sam doesn't get any sort of comeuppance. Sure, Nate wasn't happy with his 'Normal Life' but Sam outright lies to his brother, pulling him out of retirement and putting him, Elena and Sully in mortal danger once again, just because he's obsessed with finding the treasure.
    The way I would've written the ending would be to make Sam the final boss, and not Rafe (who would instead be a red herring). Hear me out here. We get to the point where Nate, Elena, Sully and Sam are making their escape from New Devon. The bridge collapses and Sam ultimately decides to go back for the treasure. However, this time Nate would catch up with Sam before he reaches the ship. The two would argue and ultimately engage in an epic Brothers Drake fistfight - Sam representing Nate's old obsession and Nate representing his new, changed and more mature mindset. Just as the fight reaches its climax, Rafe (someone who shares Sam's obsession) is seen leaving the island with the treasure. "Look what you did! You let him escape!" Sam would say. But then something terrible happens to Rafe's ship; it sinks and he perishes beneath the ocean, along with the treasure. This way, the theme of the treasure being linked with death still remains, Sam realises the error of his ways and repents, and Nate still saves his brother's life, but in a more meaningful way. Most importantly, it would have shown that Nate has finally accepted that his days as a globe-trotting treasure thief have come to an end, hence the title: A Thief's End. Those are just my thoughts. What do you think?

      I like the idea, but the problem with it is that Rafe does die because of the obsession with the treasure, and Sam learns his lesson by almost dying as well. I love that PlayStation's first part studios are so open to doing strange things in gameplay to complement or enhance the narrative. Having Nathan not pick up a gun for the first half of the game would have been weird and might not have even worked but I think it would have been interesting and I love that they considered it at all. To me it's similar to how Santa Monica changed God of War so fundamentally. Not only did they change the gameplay, they wanted a more matured character so they gave him a son. They also made the blood splatter more restrained to make it more shocking.
    I love the Uncharted 4 we got, but the darker toned version where Sam is an antagonist sounds like it could have been incredible.

    Amy's plan would have been much better for the story. Especially with the focus on Nate and Sam building a better relationship between each other as the game progresses.
    The Uncharted 4 we got was still good but story wise it lacked a bit. Everything started fixing itself like magic near the end of the game which felt unrealistic. But the Sam we got became a very likeable character instead.
    So yeah Amy would've delivered a better plot but the game we got had a better character for Sam specifically.

    • @khdzstudio
      @khdzstudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If at one point in Amy's story idea, Nate had to choose between Sam his real family, and Elena/Sully I think him making the choice of Elena/Sully would've been much more dynamic midway into the game. Where he has chosen his new found family as opposed to his previous one. I liked Uncharted 4 but the villains weren't really villains, more like obstacles. Sam turning out to be the villain midpoint would've hurt more for both Nate and the player. By villain I don't mean him turning around an saying "its me Mr. Bond" but more to the effect that he was that selfish he would leave Elena/Sully to die for the treasure. Blood isn't always thicker than water type of thing. I think much of the friction of Uncharted 3 is that Amy and Neil weren't working together anymore as he was working on TLOU and if you strip the TLOU to it's core, its really the story that carries it. The gameplay isn't fun, it's ok. But the story is what keeps you going. I've also heard that resources where taken from Uncharted 3 to TLOU so who knows. Uncharted 2 is still the best Naughty Dog game created and by the sound of it will remain that way. This was just my take.

    I feel that everything worked out for the best. The loss of Amy Hennig's direction and creative control over 'A Thief's End' was felt, but it was not derivative of failure by any means. Her story honestly sounded a little cheesy, in terms of the context of the franchise's finale that is. Sam working with Rafe from the perspective of an antagonist/anti-hero reminds me too much of Star Wars. Rafe being Darth Sidious and Sam being Vader almost. Granted, Sam's motivation for playing the role of the antagonist would have been perfect, but his redemption would have been hard to believably pull off.
    I felt that Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley orchestrated Sam's motivations perfectly, in that he did hold some form of resentment against Nathan due to his life being put on hold, while Nate got to do everything that they had planned on doing together. Yet, at the same time he wanted to go on the biggest adventure that they had planned together for the very first and the very last time. Overall, I'm just grateful that Druckmann and Straley used Hennig's vision as a guideline in order to stay true to what Uncharted has always been.

    After seeing this video, you have actually brought to light some concerns i have had with ND and the current state of its games. While i loved UC2-3, i always felt UC4 to be lacking. And while i lobed Chloe's side mission, i felt that charcter really needed to be in the main story to round out the cast. She just has some of the best quips to rival Nathan, and even more clever at times. I actually miss them as a couple, and prefer that parring. The scene where Nathan climbing up the ladder and remarking on Chloes ample backside saying "its a shame you have to sit on something to pretty" honestly shocked me at first. But then i grew to love that, as its honestly how adults talk in RL, and adds a bite of spiciness and bite to the dialogue. Not everyone is so prime and proper... especially professional thieves, assassins, murderers, and treasure hunters.
    The original trailer for UC4 actually excites me more, and makes me miss Amy Henning that much more. Dont get me wrong... TLOU blew me away, and was one of the best gaming experiences i had on the PS3. But it wasn't all Drukman... and To be quiet honest, i find his decision making to be quiet pretentious. Shoe-horning seemingly progressive ideas just to get a self-gratifying rise. Nadine never made much since in teh story other than getting a woman of color in the mix. While actually liking the character, she actually reminded me of my sister, there was something off about her. As though she never felt like a true villain... only one that would eventually be on your side. I feel that having Sam as the presumed villain for most of the game, until the very end would have been more of a nail-bitting story, and less predictable than what UC4 would eventually become. I think Henning has a nack for just creating great stories that are just about investing you the player. She invited me into the uncharted world, and never felt insulted or talked down to as a player.
    I think its best that this was Nathans last adventure, as i think Henning was the only one who trully understood Drakes charcter. Afterall, she was the original creator.
    I personally dont understand the supposed hate with 3, as thats my personal favorite, followed by 2. I know thats a subjective viewpoint, but also see alot of people who had issues with UC4.
    UC3 had the best set pieces for me, and i loved running away from collapsing structures, or a high speed chase against a caravan (ala indiana jones) or high flying plane. I get thats what most uncharteds do well (well i wasn't that much into UC1) but 3 semmed to really hit that sweat spot, and racthed up the sweet chaos. And for my money, i loved the more melee focused system. To me, the 3rd person shooting in Uncharted wasnt the draw, and i would loved to see an UC where you focus a bit more on stealth, hand to hand combat, and using your environment against your enemies. Sorta like a Jackie Chan fight scene.
    At the end of the day, i do appreciate your video, as it highlights reasons my subconscious was telling me that i didn't like UC4.
    And not that this may surprise anybody, but i dont much favor the apparent direction TLoU2 is going to take, as it throws subtlety and nuance out the door. Nope... just straight finger poiting, and grand standing on issues. I loved finding out low-key that Bill was gay. It wasnt shoved in my face... just real subtle. Or that they didnt use the words rape, even though it was implied that Ellies was very much in danger of that several times in eh game. Characters felt natural, and likeable... from all walks of life. Now, they just feel like cookie-cutter checkmarks. Not every relatable, real, and just plain offensive. But i guess thats the point with Drukman. Hes looking to be a polarizing auteur, but on a AAA companies dime.
    To me... sooner or later, its not gonna work out for him.
    I miss Henning. She was (SHE... yes, SHE) was the goose that was laying the golden eggs. She was inclusive without even trying. But now, we have the same ol white knights, trying to save the day. Just in a different suit of armor. So instead of barbaric middle-ages we have mister chivalry, the so called enlightened ones... but i never trusted those guys! Always had a knife behind their back.
    IDN! Maybe im wrong... god i hope so. But i dont see the future of NG in a great light!
    Nuff said!

  • @Abhinav-o9v
    @Abhinav-o9v 7 ปีที่แล้ว +186

    Hey Robin great video as usual. Please just read my explanation on why the story we got was better. First of all, Rafe was a great villain who had realistic ambitions. IMO he was the best villain of the series. Then if Sam would have been the antagonist, it would have been a big cliche. The Sam we got was a great character on all fronts. The only thing that can be a bit complaining that how Nadine beat up both the Drakes. But I have a counter argument for this. Nadine was highly trained mercenary who knew fighting techniques and was younger than both the Drakes who were probably in their mid 30s or 40s and had street fighting experience rather than proper techniques and another possibility is that both the Drakes were holding back against a woman because they were good hearted and sensible(A similar example is how Spiderman is strong enough to kill people in one punch, but he holds back because Great power...great responsibility) and any sensible man would try to hold back against a woman if he lands in such a situation.Also the game gave Drake the perfect closure and tied up all the loose ends and also this game is a character study in itself if you pay close attention. IMO this is Naughty Dog's best work so far because their mastery in technical, gameplay and story department which has accumulated together to create this masterpiece. The only things other Uncharted games have over it crazy set pieces like Uncharted 3's plane crash or The Lost Legacy's silenced gun because I really feel that would have been a lot helpful in areas like Scotland or Drawbridge or Jungle Island on Crushing. Other than that perfect game. No other series or character can come so close to my heart ever. And keep up the great work Robin.

      The fact that you came up with this logic to justify how Nathan lost to a woman is incredible. She's just a better fighter with military experience and he wasn't holding back

    • @Abhinav-o9v
      @Abhinav-o9v 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Paulo You also don't have any proof that he wasn't holding back. If you have played the game, you know that Nathan Drake took out 3 ultra heavy armored goons who wielded fully automatic heavy guns along with tons of sniper and shotgun wielding mercenaries and Naughty Dog games tell their stories via gameplay as well and if you use logic, an ultra heavy armored goon with a fully automatic heavy machine gun is weaker than Nadine. In Chapter 7, when Nate first encounters Nadine, he is clearly holding back as it is evident from his body language.I would also go on an extent to say that he considered this encounter as a joke. Also in Chapter 15, when both the Drakes encounter Nadine, they still hold back until Nathan is kicked out of the building and fearing for Sam's life, he lands an airborne punch on Nadine which pretty much knocks her out. So Nathan Drake is far more powerful than Nadine. But he is only using his full power here when he fears that his brother's life is in danger. Also Drake's rage is visible in the last fight when Rafe taunts him about Elena and then Nathan Drake pretty much dominates Rafe and also in the last part of Drake's deception when he kills dozens of men who he hallucinates as monsters who killed Sully. So Drake is way more powerful than you can imagine.

    Ironicly I still kind of consider Sam the main villain of UC4 considering none of the bad things would have happend with Rafe and Nadine and all that if Sam had been honest from the start. Sam caused it all with his lies. (And even further down before prison, he included Rafe withoud Nate's consent and then Rafe screwed up and Sam ended up in prison). Sam then lies and lies and lies, and knowlingly risks his little brothers life, a little brother who seems setteld, is married, is retired and unwilling to go untill manipulated into it. Rafe meanwhole had kept looking all his life for the treasure even withoud the drake's. So of course he's going to get dangerous about it when said drake's bailed on him and try to take it from him when he spend his life on it and they did not. And when Sam ran off and draged Nate into it, despite that, he even offerd them several chances to back off instead of just going for the kill from the get go. I mean Rafe is a villain. I'm not saying he isn't. . But Sam very much is also one. Just not your typical kind.

      Nathan lies to his wife and also never gets punished for it there's no consequence or resolution characters just forget things happened.
      It's why it's the worst story in the series there so many plot holes

    As much as I loved the game and it's story, the concept of Sam actually being a main villain until they heal their relationship and work together actually sounds a bit more intriguing to me.
    I still enjoyed the story and think 4's story was one of the most interesting ones.

      @Aaron Penfold the huge nuclear bomb cliffhanger of abby with 11+ hrs of gameplay of her.
      The game tries to feel empathy with abby's friends but every single one of them do something stupid to get killed,
      Lev stealing a boat to the island of the scars to see his transphobic mum WATAFUCK WAS THAT?????
      Dina Gets pregnant and gets useless but then there is Mel a woman 8 month pregnant doing badass shit
      The fact that practically ellie goes ti Santa barbara to save abby and dont kill her its a joke,
      The copy paste of Joel and ellie to Abby and Lev "me enferma" i dont know an english expression for that,
      ETC

    I like the current story and plot points better. Because the story of Uncharted 4 is about regret, not resent. It's about a family torn apart by the loss of their mother, unable to stand up on their feet against the unfairness of life. The current story is a character study look into the lives and personality of the two brothers.
    To make Sam just another cliched revenge seeking villain who got mad at Nathan for someone elses actions (Rafe's), would just be too forced.
