It was the “Rendezvous”. Location was Torquay, Devon, on the SW UK coast. As a mere £6m yacht it’s more or less a tiddler in superyacht industry terms, hardly something any Russian oligarch would bother to have. Owner is believed to be British, but that’s unconfirmed. Hope that helps.

This fire started in the lower midships/forward section of the vessel, as earlier footage shows, that is where the galley is situated. No proof yet, but as a running hypothesis it’s far more likely that either Cheffy forgot the potato chips that he was shallow frying, or that someone female flushed a bog and the macerator pump couldn’t handle the tampon that she’d been warned never ever to drop into a marine toilet, jamming it up and creating a near short in the dc motor that drives it. That’s when wiring gets hot and, in theory, a fuse blows and cuts the supply. Problem is that guests and inexperienced stewardesses often ignore warnings and do just that. Engineers do get a bit cheesed off with rebuilding toilets on a regular basis, it’s an unsavoury job. Sometimes if a macerator circuit receives an overrated fuse it’ll struggle but will keep going. That’s absolutely the wrong approach but I’ve personally witnessed it having been done on yachts I’ve worked aboard. That’s just reality, mundane and stupid though it is. 🤷♂️

Growing up in New York whenever there was a building burning intensely like this obvious insurance job. On Long Island there was a motor home dealer who had one fry down to the ground. The interesting thing this dealer always had the motor homes and trailers neatly lined up 5-6 feet apart. On this occasion the one burnt to the ground was well separated from the others and sometime around midnight it burned like the yacht from one end to the other??????????????

It is a PRINCESS Y85 yacht, of which 31 were built. It is very unlikely that it is the "Rendezvous" as the all white hull of the boat on fire does not match to Rendezvous' white superstructure with a beige coloured hull.

These yachts are not just vulnerable to fire when in port. They can catch fire at sea as well, where you can't just stroll down the gangplank onto a pretty pier and walk up to the restaurant to watch the fire from a front-row seat.

I know fibreglass burns very fast, but how is it possible that this boat can be entirely consumed by flames yet is still tied up to the pier with not a single fire crew or emergency services in sight? Clearly the mooring lines were going to burn through, the boat would be adrift (which it did) and then be an even greater fire hazard, risking setting light to the pier and/or other boats.
My nephew knows the owner - an English guy. It’s conservatively valued at £2M and didn’t have a permanent crew on board. It is believed the fire started due to an electrical fault. Fire did substantial damage to the mooring as well.

@@stuandthestump the ones I worked on took an average of one year to build, they were 100 footers. If they had a lot of custom items the build could easily exceed that. Often the plans went on for several months before the work ever started.

I’m a retired chief engineer who worked aboard superyachts very similar to the one in question. Most of the superstructure is probably glass reinforced plastic. The enormous amount of thick black smoke suggests that it is plastic that is burning.

We had guy in Dublin who sold carpets... anyway maybe three or four times a decade for 20 years he set fire to his own building yet for some reason shortly after there were van loads of carpet sellers, selling his very brand of carpets, door to door!

It is a PRINCESS Y85 yacht, of which 31 were built. It is very unlikely that it is the "Rendezvous" as the all white hull of the boat on fire does not match to Rendezvous' white superstructure with a beige coloured hull.

These yachts are not just vulnerable to fire when in port. They can catch fire at sea as well, where you can't just stroll down the gangplank onto a pretty pier and walk up to the restaurant to watch the fire from a front-row seat.

I know fibreglass burns very fast, but how is it possible that this boat can be entirely consumed by flames yet is still tied up to the pier with not a single fire crew or emergency services in sight? Clearly the mooring lines were going to burn through, the boat would be adrift (which it did) and then be an even greater fire hazard, risking setting light to the pier and/or other boats.

My nephew knows the owner - an English guy. It’s conservatively valued at £2M and didn’t have a permanent crew on board. It is believed the fire started due to an electrical fault. Fire did substantial damage to the mooring as well.

A lot of implications of insurance fraud. I don’t think so right now there’s a shortage of yachts for sale in other words there’s more buyers than sellers and it takes approximately three years to build one. Only an idiot would burn their yacht down rather than sell it and make money.

@@stuandthestump the ones I worked on took an average of one year to build, they were 100 footers. If they had a lot of custom items the build could easily exceed that. Often the plans went on for several months before the work ever started.

I’m a retired chief engineer who worked aboard superyachts very similar to the one in question. Fire was always my greatest concern, it’s often a one way street unless it’s stopped immediately after first ignition.

Been a liveaboard/cruiser for years. The amount of STUPID and incompetent on the water - particularly on the south coast of england in summer - that I see these days is staggering and beyond belief. They bring their phones and their disgusting personalities out on to the sea with them too. They use dog leads and zero scope to anchor in tidal rivers so they drag, or they think it's acceptable to drop their hook within a couple of boat lengths of others. They crash through marinas and blame everyone else.They do not understand colregs ... the list is endless.
