Ben Mink joined them for the gig in Toronto for the R40 tour, but the best version of this song was with guest musician classic violinist Jonathan Dinklage (Rush fan and brother of actor Peter Dinklage) , who was formerly part of the Clockwork Angels Ensemble, a strings ensemble who played with Rush on the previous tour.

Thanks! I started listening to your Rush Reactions every morning. Great way to start the day with a Rush song, and a first-time listener's honest reaction. There's a lyric from Clockwork Angels album that always hits me hard. It goes like this:
"All the highlights of that headlong flight (into Rush)
I'm holding on with all my might to what I felt back then.
... I wish that I could live it all again"
Your song-by-song reactions are as close as I can get to feeling what I felt back then, and living it all again.
    So ...THANKS MAN!

Thanks for posting the muted version. I synced the song to your reaction and it worked just fine. This is one of my favorite tracks of the album. Maybe THE favorite. They played this a couple times during R40. I saw the R40 in Atlanta and was praying they would play this live since I had never seen it live. Sadly I found out they played it live with a guest violinist the next night in North Carolina. I was so pissed lol. Not sure who played each of the 5 shows but they had a guest who's name escapes me and Ben Mink did play on stage with them in Toronto on this song.

Peter Dinklage the actor who played Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones his brother John Dinklage played electric violin on 4 of the 5 live 2015 dates while Ben Mink played live with Rush on the Toronto date it’s a shame this got blocked I really don’t understand why only one Rush song would get blocked unless it’s because Ben played on it ?? But Aimee Mann sang on “Time stand still” and that didn’t get blocked!! I’m baffled 🤔🤔🤔🤔

    • @ericvonsteuben7533

Yes, it's because of Ben's peeps blocking it. Aimee Mann's peeps obviously don't care about Time Stand Still. The same with Hugh Syme's keyboard parts on 2112: Overture, Tears, Different Strings, and Witch Hunt.

Reaction received. I listened to the song in another window while watching. I LOVE this song - some of Neil's best lyrics. It has inspired me for decades. One of Neil's mottos was, "What is the most excellent thing I can do today?" I ask my self this nearly every morning to avoid the "bell tolling" for me which has made all the difference. I saw them do this live for R40 in Denver (awful seats). I'm not sure who was playing violin on stage, but they had a large string section seated behind the band that played "The Garden" and I thought also played on this song. EPIC CONCERT! I really appreciate the journey you're taking me on, Justin 💕

I love this song. And it took on a whole new meaning when Neil retired because his body just couldn’t handle the live 3 hour shows anymore. He felt he couldn’t be 100% so it was not fulfilling for him. It relates right back to the meaning behind this song. Between this and The Garden which is the very last song on their last album, hard to listen to them without getting a bit emotional.

Great reaction… lol!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! This is one of my favorite’s! I think it’s “Ben Mink” that gets blocked..lol! Such great writing in this. Neil had said he was moved by a story about Ernest Hemingway who had gotten an invitation to a formal banquet and he stood there and could not compose an answer… his Alzheimer’s had taken it all away. So glad you enjoyed!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

I saw Jonathan Dinklage play this at Madison Square Garden for their R40 tour. I've heard the live recording with Ben Mink, and it's really good, but they use the recording with Jonathan Dinklage for their yearly Cinema Strangiato showing at the theaters. After seeing Jonathan live (and in Cinema Strangiato) and seeing the Ben Mink recording, I think Jonathan's was far more mind-blowing. When they started playing this song during the concert, I thought "Wow. This is a real treat and surprise!", but during the violin lead, it got so intense and dramatic, my jaw was dropping. It was one of the best things I had seen and heard! So intense! It was nothing short of amazing!

One of my favorite Rush songs. I remember listening to this album on my Walkman when it came out, I was a teenager. This song always stood out to me because of the lyrics. Short Bio for Ben Mink, with a small edit from me. Benjamin Mink (born January 22, 1951) is a Canadian songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer best known as a longtime collaborator of Canadian singer k.d. lang and progressive band FM. He plays several string instruments, notably the guitar, violin, and the mandolin, and is a music producer. He lives in Vancouver. There is a great cover video and you can see visually just how great this violin piece is. - Losing It (cover by Brody Dolyniuk & Nina DiGregorio) Neil Peart tribute.

Losing It is a very different track for Rush. One cannot help thinking back to the lyrics of this song in reflecting on Neil's physical struggles towards the end of Rush's touring and his subsequent battle with cancer. It is another rare song that has an outside musician. Ben Mink is featured on the electric violin which takes a central part of the song. Ben Mink would return to assist Geddy with his only solo album in 2000, would also provide strings on the 2007 Rush song "Faithless" and Ben would make a special live appearance on the R40 tour to play violin on this song. Losing It was only played live a handful of times on the R40 Tour in 2015.

I happened to be reading Neil's book _Ghost Rider_ last night and the section where he visits Hemingway's memorial includes some interesting comments about this song.
"Next morning I started out riding eastward on the Sun Valley Road, pausing for a moment at the Hemingway Memorial, a bronze bust, in a grove of trees by Trail Creek. Ernest Hemingway ended his life in 1961 with a shotgun blast to the head in the front hall of his home in Ketchum, Idaho, near Sun Valley. He is buried under a plain stone slab in the local cemetary beside his fourth wife, Mary. At the end he was ill, feeble and suffering from paranoia and the effects of electroshock therapy. Earlier that year, he had spent _days_ trying to write a simple reply to an invitation to John F. Kennedy's inauguration, and perhaps he decided that if he couldn't write any more, he couldn't live anymore.
A Rush song "Losing It", from 1982, opens with a verse inspired by Hemigway's sad end, attempting to express the frustration of no longer being able to do something which, to him, was more important than life itself: "Sadder still to watch it die than never to have known it.""
I've always liked this song. Yes, so different than so many other songs, but I like it when the change it up and do something slower, softer or unique like this.
And as a p.s. the book is not an easy read as he's on the road motorcycling while working through his grief at losing his daughter and his wife. You might think the gentle professor is all kindness, but he was really quite angry and I do understand his grief, so some of his comments are rather dark and mean. I'm glad he made it through and came out the other side, but I still have a ways to go in the book so...

About the song itself, it is for sure a favorite from their library. Very poignant lyrics and the music matches the words perfectly. The slow build up in intensity helps describe the frustration and anger of the second character.

Ben Mink was seriously channeling his inner Eddie Jobson for that solo. His work in FM (their album Black Noise is considered a prog rock classic) never quite reached these heights. Oh, and if you want to seriously get lost down the rabbit hole of obscure Canadian pop music, check out the career of Ben's predecessor in FM, Nash the Slash. Like many teenagers, I was a bit "meh" on this song when the album came out. It's a real outlier in terms of style (other than that solo section), and the mere notion of Rush putting something this contemplative on the album caused many to disregard it. Now, of course, it's considered a classic in the catalog, and I'm just glad Rush were finally able to play it live before they called it quits.

Don't know who Ben Mink is? Hrn you MUST do a reaction to Geddy Lee's MY FAVOURITE HEADACHE. It's Geddy and Ben Mink. As well as Matt Cameron , Pearl Jam, SoundGarden and others mainly on all drums except one. You'll really here Ben's Guitar sounds. Killer!!

I Agree with Enrique completely Ben Mink did great on the record and live in Toronto but Peter’s brother was even better!

If you understand what the song is about, then you understand why RUSH never played the song live until the very end.

The write up is wrong, I saw this performed live in Toronto on the Signals tour, with FM as the opening act and Nash the Slash (Ben Mink in mummy wrap) playing violin. BTW why does this particular track get blocked, it's owned by the same corps. as the rest of the album.

That was definitely weird watching a music reaction to a muted song. Lol.

Wow! Who would have thought that song could sound so good telepathically! I'll bet you caught the lyrics to this one pretty clearly from your end too.
You will never hear a song with this kind of an overtone from Rush again untill you enter, "The Garden" but that's a bit of a trek from here. Countdown, to this day, sounds like nothing I've ever heard. It probably wouldn't surprise me if you found a way to relate it to some kind of Culture Club song somehow though. Lmao!

  • @itsmedrooms6071

Was it blocked because of Mink’s participation on the track or what? It’s strange that this song out of all the previous songs done is the only one blocked. Hope it’s not a foreshadowing of things to come because I don’t know the reason.

How many Rush fans would say The Analog Kid is not up to par? lol No offense Justin, but I imagine that number is like 1%. ha Many Rush fans feel it's the best song on the record. Glad you liking the underrated track Losing it. Before Neil's tragic cancer diagnosis shortly after Rush's last show, I pretty sure Neil was going to hang up the sticks to avoid actually living the lyrics to this song. His quote was something like " I can easily play Charlie Watts drum parts at an advanced age, but playing Neil Peart's drum parts is a different thing altogether.

Sorry you had to mute it, and it's a bit weird watching your reaction without the song! I admit I watched on 1.75 speed after a while, but it's still worth including it. This is one track I go back and forth on, but I like it well enough - certainly top half of the album.
