    I must have played through this game a dozen times as a kid, this is probably one of the best, and most underrated games of the entire 16-bit era. A classic revenge story staring shotgun wielding tank-top Conan, about as 90s as it gets, what more do you need?

      I thought I was the only one doing these weird little traditions. My birthday is on December so I always got new videogames before Christmas. So I spent all of December playing 24/7. I got goldeneye and ocarina of time for N64. But then I stopped getting games and started playing PC games. The first pc game was quake, doom, Wolfenstein and age of empire. I'm talking about 1997/ 98/ 99

    Cinematic Platformers are my favorite genre. Loved them back in the day, always wished there were more. I still have to play Nosferatu.
    I never looked at them as action games, but more like adventure games.

    This game is a masterpiece !!! Is imposible not to love it even with all the "flaws" things (the game was intentionally made clunky to add tension to the player).Blackthorne deserved a sequel. Maybe a fan request would get us a Blackthorne 2.

    This is by far one of the best games I ever played period... the atmosferic ost and the sound fx are so satisfying! The combat is more tatical, like a proper shoot-out, going in guns blazing will just make you an easy target. The stages are really wel designed but its quite common to hit a dead end or getting stuck, I had to quit the stage more times than died.
    The only flaws in this game is the lack of a map, the lack of 8 direction shooting (giving it to the player AND to enemys would make combat so much more interesting), lack of divertity in enemy design and style. And, this is more of an upgrade if a remake ever comes up, making it 2.5 D with paralax and dynamic backgrounds would be awesome! Also it would allow more oponents per stage, the 2v1 and 3v1 fights are the toughest of this game but only because its easy to get cornered, and enemys always win on close-quarters so having a secondary attack would improve greatly this game

    Great work as always from the Drunk! I played through Blackthorne for the first time five or ten years ago and loved it. The jumps required precision, but I don't remember it ever feeling unfair or frustrating. The only caveat IMHO is the final boss, as he is quite difficult and the skill set needed to defeat him is different than all the gameplay that came before. That said, I'd still highly recommend this one.

    • @heymonkey65
      @heymonkey65 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cellfix It is hard, but it is also a lot more forgiving with deaths than other games. The game sorta expects you to die very often, especially with the controls, so thank goodness for it being liberal with deaths.

    Always loved this game. Recently beat the PC version that you can get free for making a battle.net account. The only shame of it is the music from the SNES version is a lot better, and is very different.

    I already played Out of the Word, Flash Back and Blackthorne and all them are incredible, with his singularities each. OFTW and FB has a more serious background, but the last it's more fun and give the feeling of being a bad ass. I'd say that I had more fun playing Blacjthorne than playing the other two games from the snes era.

    You get used to the way jumping works and can eventually predict precisely what's gonna happen (much like other similar games, and Tomb Raider 1-3 in 3D), and movement is a bit tighter than in Prince of Persia I found.

    The final boss is an excellent example of testing all the myriad skills the player has been honing throughout the game; not, to borrow from Yahtzee Croshaw, the opportunity for the art and sound department to bombasticly show off their video game college degrees (endemic to so many modern AAA titles).

    Nice!, just 2 weeks ago I finally found a nice CIB copy of Blackthorne and Flashback for SNES. I've not played yet any of them but I sure like how they look, I do know the controls are very rigid which I understand is these games' style.

    • @SoilentGr33n
      @SoilentGr33n 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flashback's controls are on a grid and I think Blackthorne as well. Knowing this takes the guess work out of some jumps. Won't make the game any easier trust me. In flashback when running, you automatically jump on high ledges as well

  • @Sly88Frye

    I only played this game once on a former friends GBA back in the early 2000s and I completely missed out on this game back in the SNES era despite growing up in the 90s, but the thing I remember most about this game is those orcs. I guess they're supposed to be mutants, but I really thought they were futuristic space orcs and they are hilarious. if you get shot by one they do a hilarious laugh but then they leave themselves open for you to shoot them and then they die it's so funny! "HAHAHA OW!!!"
    Now the classic Blizzard game I am more familiar with that came out before they made it big with the starcraft and the Warcraft games and yes eventually world of Warcraft games, would be lost Vikings. I remember watching my older brother's play it on the Sega channel and I eventually got it much later on the GBA. I hope to find a review of that.

    The odd thing is that your reward at the end of each level is a better shotgun. But there's no game+ or a way to go back and play earlier levels with the better equipment nor can you advance to the next level without picking up the new weapon if you want a bigger challenge. Missed opportunity I guess.

    unfortunately a lot of the games I loved when I was young don't really do it for me any more. Walk to the right, kill everything, collect the coins...blah. But weird games like this one holds up really well! but maybe it's just me.
