Hello friends! I am back now, and wanted to post a quick comment to update you on how I used these supplies! I only did 2 pump site changes while on vacation (as expected) and came home with 3 extra sites. This is ok, since it's always good to have backups in case of site failures or cancelled flights. I also did 1 Dexcom sensor change while there. As for things I wish I would have packed... more Dexcom tapes!! The heat and humidity in CR made it challenging to keep my Dexcom sensor on, and I ended up having to change it early because it fell off lol. As always, thank you so much for watching and for your support with these videos! I will be posting more about my T1D and this trip on Instagram, so give me a follow to see more about the trip itself :)
GREAT, thanks. Hey, the liquid glucose vials in the US are $1.48 at Walmart. Also, Walmart's gummy-like candy is more effective than flat discs. It also takes real coordination to open those 2 "chalk" candy packs and each is only 10 discs (40 grams total).
Hi Michelle, a while ago I told you that your highs of 10 are my lows, am happy to share that they are more controlled now and after being on the high side of the hba1c test like over 14 now they are lower at 8 and am aiming for even lower. It's all thanks to you helping me realize I can do anything, achieve anything and go anywhere with proper management, so thank you.
Joan kanyukii Wow, this is wonderful ❤️!!! I’m so happy that my videos have helped, but it’s really you that took the initiative and did all the hard work! So good job 😊!!
OMG! I feel SO much better! I thought I over-packed supplies, but I do believe you've probably out-stocked us all!!!! Always good to be prepared, however!!! :-)
Great video and thanks for sharing. As a parent with a son with T1D I always find your videos very informative and helpful. Good list of supplies. I don’t think an extra pump is overkill at all!! Very smart. and I always go overboard when packing for vacations. Especially a lake or ocean vacation. Probably twice as more as you cause I am always nervous and he’s 10. My fear when I travel is if something happens to the omnipod PDM. You lose that you are SOL. At least with all other pumps you can bolus from the pump itself. We have an old animas pump we bring but that’s out of warranty etc. so many things to worry about like you say. I am a freak. If I was going out of country I would probably next day air a set of supplies to the hotel or house I was staying at Incase I lose luggage in travel. Thanks again for the video.
💕 love the video 💕 Such great advice for any TD1!!!Specially the Lantus (low acting insulin) and extra pump, if you use an insulin pump.... I learned that lesson the ‘hard’ way, in one of my trips to Mexico, we went to the beach, I totally forgot to unplug my Animas (that’s the pump I was using back then) and decide to have fun in the water, that’s when I also learned my pump wasn’t water resistant 😬. Long story short, I survived the next 2 days with extra-multiple injections of fast acting insulin.... not fun 🥺😖, until I got back to the states. Regarding treating lows, I always carry Smarties 🍬, they help get my sugar back to level , they are great 👍🏻 ... just want to say thank you Canada 🇨🇦 for making those awesome candy 🍬 rolls!!!
I've been diagnosed last month and I'm going on a school trip next week. I was so scared because I didn't know what to pack and what should I bring for emergency situations. This video is a lifesaver!!
Hi Michelle. I go back to so many of your videos for reference about T1D and sometimes just for reassurance. You’re direct and informative but with TLC in there. Thank you for your videos and sharing your journey with us. You’re so amazing!
Thank you!! That was great!! We have yet to fly with William so this will be really helpful. That bag looks ideal! 😍 Usually we bring our hard case “pancreas” with way too much backup but travelling by car makes it easy. I think you got just the right balance 👍
Thank you Michelle, I love this video. I was recently in Indonesia and was pushed into a pool with my Medtronic pump on. It died. I had my spare pump, but the settings from my dead pump had been changed by my endo shortly before the holiday, and I didn’t update them in my notes on the phone. How stupid am I? I rang my endo’s office and his staff couldn’t access my file from his computer??? So all they had were some handwritten scribbles. I then rang Medtronic to get the backup pump set up and started. Turns out that the settings were completely and utterly wrong, wrong, wrong. I had my second worse hypo on the flight Jakarta to Sydney Australia. 3 hours into a 9 hour flight and just wow. My husband freaked out and completely forgot everything he had ever learned about my diabetes (36 plus years) and was screaming at me to stop shaking and crying. The flight attendant was trying to put an oxygen mask on me! I could feel my brain sliding into unconsciousness and I thought that I was going to die. I really did think I was dying. Between them all, they managed to get some ginger beer into me, this was after 3 packs of 26gms of liquid carb, and my glucometre finally register a blood sugar level of LOW. What a completely horrendous experience. My husband has since undergone a re-run of Glucagon etc. I wish that I could afford the CGM, but it is not supported here in Australia. It is prohibitively expensive to both set up and the consumables are just not achievable by normal people.
I packed for a trip to Vermont over Thanksgiving. Worked out perfect that both Dexcom G6 and site change were morning of travel. I tried something different for pump cartridge loading with the full 300 units. I usually load180 after tubing prime. Like you, I planned for 2 site changes and brought a spare Dexcom. Trip was 5 days and the cartridge lasted until I got home. Perfect! I have never heard of NovoRapid. I use Novolog. On the list for Tandem Control-IQ. Nurse educator informed me that Control-IQ overwrites Basal-IQ making Basal-IQ unrecoverable. I am OK with that as Control-IQ performs in a similar manner protecting you from lows as well as bolusing for highs. Glad your trip went well as mine did. Taught my niece's son how to make Italian sausage stuffed cabbage rolls. We also enjoyed the Von Trapp family ski lodge, restaurant and brewery near Stowe, VT. "The hills are alive with the sound of music".
Thanks for sharing! That sure is a lot of supplies, but I’m glad you found what works well for you. Do you not like using pens if your pump should fail? (You have Lantis + an extra pump) would you not feel comfortable just resorting to Lantus? Maybe it’s because you’ve used a pump for a very long time and are much more accustomed to it. I’m the opposite, and love to take pump breaks and actually schedule days for pen use on my vacations (especially if a lot of water time will be part of it - don’t like the idea of being in a pool without that constant drip of insulin happening).
Thanks Michelle for the video. It was great and makes me feel a bit more "normal" 🤣 My next holiday is for 8 weeks and I'm on MDI. I'm freaking out already about how much diabetes stuff I'm gonna need!!!
I feeeeel you! I dont bring as many options for insulin if my pump fails, but I've got 3 dexcoms, a transmitter, AND a spare omnipod pump packed for my trip to Panama. Not to mention insulin, infusion sets, low treatment and glucometer!
Welcome back! Though I'm sure with the weather we're having, you'd rather not be :) Great informative video as usual. I agree with you, it's always best to be over prepared. Did you take a Frio pack for your insulin?
Will you maybe do a video on measuring Ketones with a Libre. And your experience 2 years ago would also be helpful. Thank you for all of your informative videos.
Thanks for this video. I'm travelling to Europe in July so this was helpful. I'm going for 3 weeks. I use the dexcom g6 and insulin pens. I don't have dexcom receiver so can I till use my phone on the aeroplane to get readings. I know that at take off and landing phone needs to be in aeroplane mode. This would be my first time travelling with the g6. Even if you don't have data can you receive readings.
G Aingaran I just spent a few weeks flying around and was in a similar situation as you. So, I left with one basal insulin in a frio case. Bolus in another frio case. An extra vial in there so I could put it in the hotel fridge. A Dexcom sensor, my OneTouch glucose tester, and... that’s it. Airplane mode will kill any Dexcom readings. Don’t bother turning on airplane mode. You’ll be fine. After a half week in salt water and 30 degrees my sensor was starting to peel off, so just hit a drug store for some 3M medical tape. Voila. Fixed. There’s always that what if feeling... but realistically... pharmacies are in all parts of the world, and provided you aren’t in the US or Canada... the essential insulin is cheap if it goes bad (on one other vacation, I fried my insulin in the trunk of a car. In a totally different Canadian province, but pharmacist took insurance info and had insulin for me within twenty minutes.)
Hi Michelle, thanks for this video! With your insulin pens, did you just ask your endo for a prescription and tell him/her it’s to be used as a backup? I haven’t done this but think it’s a great idea!
I have type 1 diabetes I'm a new to it cuz I got it a week ago And btw on Facebook there is a type 1 diabetes thing on it And I'm getting a pump and dexcom360 just like me dad..
Mrs Lord, I just found your you tube videos recently. On instagram saw a picture of you on the Amalfi coast. i am planning a first trip there for the spring time and I would like to know about food; was it easy to find something else than pasta and pizza ? I won't go to restaurant but I will buy food in Cafés or at the grocery. Thank you so much for all the information in the videos.
Hello good afternoon Michelle, a while ago since I follow you on your youtube channel, and in one of your videos you mentioned about the ontario laws about diabetes and that this is considered a disability, or something like that, Could you tell me where to find this information about it, or make mention in a future video, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time and help!!
Hi! Of course! Diabetes Canada has awesome resources for us Canadians T1Ds! Here is a great page provided by them with respect to our rights and advocating for ourselves: www.diabetes.ca/diabetes-basics/your-rights
I have type 1. Have had for almost a year. Im 19 almost 20. I am just out of my honeymoon phase. And have had trouble with highs alot the last few days. Ive only been carb counting for exactly a week today. I was wondering if you struggled with that at first and if it will get any better. Im on injections right now. 15units of lantus and 1 humalog for ever 20 carbs and my endo put my correction at 100 and every 60 points above that i take a unit. Idk i still eat low carb. I have eaten more than i was. But my carb range is 40-60. I used to never even go that much. Maybe 20. Maybe. But she said she wanted me to eat more normal so im more willing to venture into my carb range. But my sugar has been wild and idky. Its annoying and a major headache. Just was wondering any advice and also if you think i should ask my dr about the pump or is the injection a good thing. Idk which would be easier or better. She hasnt suggested the pump yet. I did have a question. Those strips that you said works with the libre. I have the freestyle libre and i was wondering if you could please put the link for the ketone strips. I tried to google but no luck. Thanks 😊 have a nice trip
hi Michelle. my mom has diabetes as well and she will be travelling to US for 5months so she will be carrying 5months worth of insulin+ xtras...does she need to put ice blocks on her insulin?
Hello Michelle, I am from India diagnosed with type1 two years ago till date I have never used cgm or insulin pump (cause they were not available in my country and super expensive). Recently Freestyle Libre Pro is launched here and i am planning to buy it. Even now its quite expensive (360$) as Libre is not being sold in stores or online but only through doctors, anyways would you recommend it? We don't have any other options here should I get it imported from any other country cause the cost is almost same but available is uncertain in times of emergency. And I am not really comfortable even to even think about something sticking into my body at all times and the thought of someone pulling it out just sends shivers down my spine. How do i overcome it cause i know i need it
This is a very personal choice. Some people like the Libre, and some don't. I used it for 4 months and had no issues with it, but I do prefer Dexcom. However, not all people feel the same. If Libre is what is accessible to you, and you believe it will help your diabetes management, then I don't see why you shouldn't try it out :).
Hi Michelle, I was just wondering what you do with your long acting insulin after you go on your trip? I think it's a good idea, but I don't want to waste insulin if I don't use it afterwards. Thanks :)
Elaine Tam I always keep it cool, so it doesn’t go to waste 😊. When travelling it’s in a cooling case, then I stick it the mini fridge as soon as I get to the hotel!
When my son travels on planes (especially long flights), his blood sugars are ugly. Highs for the most part. Do you find travel on planes causes bad blood sugars?
Hi! I was just wondering if you've ever got any background retinopathy? my hba1c has been in the 5's for years now (I've been t1 diabetic for 16 years, since i was 4) but i just recently got told i have a really tiny tiny amount of background retinopathy and i cant understand why or if i could possibly get rid of it? has anyone else got it aswell? :)

I'm such an overkill back up packer hands down - will definitely look into getting that case, it looks amazing!!

When I go places with water I bring basically one site per day as sometimes it comes off with so much water
You seem so much more happy in this video than in the last ones 😁 Very happy to see that ☺️
Haha oh no, I didn't realize that I seemed unhappy! I'm glad I appear more high spirited in this one :)

YAY ANOTHER VIDEO SO LIFE SAVING ❤️❤️
Have fun! Love your channel
God, i need one of those old loopable medtronic pumps..
Thanks for sharing! That sure is a lot of supplies, but I’m glad you found what works well for you. Do you not like using pens if your pump should fail? Katie Petersen Exactly, I’m more comfortable with the pump! The Lantus would be my second backup 😊
I never knew you could measure ketones with the Libre, thats greaat!
No, me either!
Thanks Michelle for the video. It was great and makes me feel a bit more "normal" 🤣

Yes! this is exactly what I asked for :)
Meeting Dr IGUDIA TH-cam channel was the beginning of a new life for me after using his herbs medication in curing my Diabetes disease.
I’m going to the Caribbean this summer and it’ll be my first holiday with an insulin pump, I’m so nervous 😂

I have a recurring nightmare that I've gone on flights or cruises with no vials of insulin and no extra pump sites lol
How did you end up liking the bag?

Just been diagnosised with diabetes. My uncle works for abbott in the uk.
Are the ketone strips covered..
Walmart at Pharmacy and Eglinton or at Dufferin Mall Michelle has Dex 4 much cheaper

Hey! The test strips are called "freestyle precision B-ketone test strips" :)
@@MichelleLord
Thanks so much!😊
Love you ❤️
When i travel i take more or less the same amount if supply as you do. 😉
hi Michelle. my mom has diabetes as well and she will be travelling to US for 5months so she will be carrying 5months worth of insulin+ xtras...does she need to put ice blocks on her insulin?
Hi can i ask witch insurance you use to travel? I have a friend with health condition and every insurance denied her.
I think you need a spare dexcom battery as if one falls of you have no replacement
Hey Michelle which online supplies site do you use to get your IV prep curiosity
Hello Michelle, I am from India diagnosed with type1 two years ago till date I have never used cgm or insulin pump (cause they were not available in my country and super expensive).

No escaping supplies. Always seem like I have more supplies with me than anything else.
What do you do if you test for ketones and it’s positive?
Hi Michelle, I was just wondering what you do with your long acting insulin after you go on your trip? I think it's a good idea, but I don't want to waste insulin if I don't use it afterwards. Thanks :)
Elaine Tam I always keep it cool, so it doesn’t go to waste 😊. When travelling it’s in a cooling case, then I stick it the mini fridge as soon as I get to the hotel!
Does insulin burn for you at all either when the basal is going or when you bolus?
No it does not!
When my son travels on planes (especially long flights), his blood sugars are ugly. Highs for the most part. Do you find travel on planes causes bad blood sugars?
Yes! I struggle with highs while travelling. I think it's from the stress of being in an airport and flying.
Hi Emily! No I've never had any retinopathy. I'm sorry you got this news :(. I would get a second opinion if I were you.
@@MichelleLord Thank you so much i definitely will get a second opinion! hopefully its just a scare and not real :)
ily lmao
😙😙😙😙😙😙🤗🤗🤗🤗
Why do you ha e fiasp and novo?
3 pen fills of insulin
Novo pen
4 pump site changes
Spare Dexcom sensor
Meter with strips and new lancets
All for 2 days and 1 night 😂
Haha I love it! You are very prepared! :)
