Local DA's always had the discretion to send these retail theft criminals to jail for up to 2 years. But they chose not to because County Jails are paid for using County tax dollars. Now that they have upped the charges to felonies, local DA's can convict and send them to state prisons paid for by state tax dollars, and their county is no longer responsible for the cost of incarceration.
To think it took retailers putting up signs saying “Every item in this store is priced at $951. Non criminal discounts applied at checkout” tells you everything you need to know about California voters.
Here in knoxville. The second time around it’s bumped up to burglary. Theft used to be maximum 12 months, and guaranteed jail time. Now it’s essentially guaranteed prison time 2-12 years.
