    I think we might need to tighten things up a bit more. Some of this vandalism, while it might seem small, for example, a broken window where the glass might cost $200, it might cost $200 to secure the property until the window can be replaced which might cost $200 more.

    We called the cops twice yesterday and it took them 15+ minutes to respond even though the police station is 5 minutes down the road. By then, the shoplifters were long gone. There are not enough police.

      there was no overcrowding. we have entire prison systems that were built and then demolished costing billions of dollars, that have never had an inmate go into them.

      Will they actually be conservative or really conservative values? The reason I say this is both Fresno and Bakersfield are supposedly red. However, the poverty, unemployment, obesity, and illiteracy rates for both of those towns is higher than Oakland. Also, Fresno's local government is super corrupt with construction and other kickbacks.

    Why on earth did this take a proposition to implement? Am I really to understand that the elected democratic legislators who control the Statehouse (and Governor) wouldn’t implement a common sense law? A law that makes stealing a felony.     These people get arrested but the DA will not prosecute them. I seriously doubt those that get arrested for retail theft will get much more than probation. If you want to deter retail theft, you give the thieves real time in prison.

    Good! I lived in Oakland for over 8 years and it was heartbreaking to see mom and pop shops have to close + bigger stores leave completely. Yes, I understand the poverty is hard to deal with. Setting your community on fire maaay not be the best idea. I am so happy I finally moved.

    Local DA's always had the discretion to send these retail theft criminals to jail for up to 2 years. But they chose not to because County Jails are paid for using County tax dollars. Now that they have upped the charges to felonies, local DA's can convict and send them to state prisons paid for by state tax dollars, and their county is no longer responsible for the cost of incarceration.

    Here in knoxville. The second time around it’s bumped up to burglary. Theft used to be maximum 12 months, and guaranteed jail time. Now it’s essentially guaranteed prison time 2-12 years.
