  • Senator Gillibrand discusses the importance of public broadcasting as funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is a federally funded program.
In many rural communities, the public television station is the only station owned and operated locally. Most television stations today are operated by large, usually out-of-state corporations.
Public broadcasting provides that vital connection to the community, in addition to the important programming they provide for kids and adults alike.
In the appropriations bill passed by the House, this funding had been removed in the final bill. This prompted Senator Gillibrand to write a letter to the appropriations committee underscoring the vitality and necessity for funding public broadcasting, as well as hold a virtual press conference to discuss the matter.
For the benefit of children and adults alike, after being amended by the Senate, the final bill that went to the president's desk included funding for CPB, which directly funds stations such as PBS in New York and WLIW in Long Island.
