    I share your frustration with the fact that we are so well educated, went through so much training, and I am ready to retire from private practice with over 45 years of experience and I don't get reimbursed any more than a new grad out of school by insurance companies if they pay me at all. I spend more time fighting, advocating, etc. than it is worth. I love my work, and recall hearing just before I graduated, that this was not a job that will make you rich in funds, but rich in helping others. That's all nice but when we see how much athletes and actors make, and how I have had to sacrifice time from my family for paperwork that is nonending, I wonder if therapists and teachers will ever be respected to be paid what we are worth. One of the positives about staying in a school is the retirement benefit! I spent 10 years in a school so I won't realize that. My dad warned me when I left that I would be better staying in the schools, but my sanity was worth going off on my own. Wish you the best in your future.

    Thank you for sharing your story. Just so you know, everyone should know about salary benchmarks. I work in HR and benchmark salaries each budget period. For our organization, a speech therapist with at least 2 years of experience (we hire at the market midpoint to be competitive. If the candidate has less experience, we bring them in below the mid-range benchmark, but not the minimum). Average Pay in Philadelphia- Mid Range is $86,912.00, Max- $102,888.00; I must say this is healthcare and long-term Rehab facilities compensation benchmarks. With the tight talent market, organizations need to pay for the skills they are requiring.

    Start a private practice, hire employees. Build...Build... and keep building. Don't work for someone else. Pricing works like this..... An example is the business bills 250 an hour.... they give you a small cut of that, maybe 40. Then they pocket the rest. If you start your own business, you pocket everything and will have enough for private health insurance, retirement, and most importantly taking advantage of all of the deductions. Be your own boss, be your own person. Your better than working for someone else.

      Thank you for this valuable insight! You’re beautiful:) if you don’t mind, I have some questions? I am currently in my post bacc year- getting ready to apply to grad school in my home town. Without a ton of worldly experience, it’s still hard for me to assess whether this amount of pay is worth the investment. I was accepted into a grad program for school psychology which I declined along the line of thought that- at least with SLP, I can work part time/remotely if I want to. This seems like the greatest benefit of SLP- the flexibility right? Nevertheless I’m still burning with curiosity about your felt experiences- would you still choose SLP if you were starting from scratch? While you are getting a second masters(wow!), do you plan to stay in SLP or possibly go into administration or something else, possibly more lucrative? Another path I’ve heavily considered is social work/becoming a private practice mental health therapist because many of them pull in over 100k/year on insurance panels but much like independent SLPs, they are responsible for their own insurance and benefits. Sorry this is getting long but I guess my confidence in SLP comes from the (debatable) notion that compared to other career paths, the actual quality of the work is a bit less stressful, even fun at times (kiddos ami right?:). What are your thoughts on this and what career paths have you ever wondered/wished you’d pursued instead if any? Thanks again for your time and providing people like me with invaluable, inspiring, and instrumental info. Thank you- best of luck ✌️💖

      @@our.secret1130 It’s a highly personal decision figuring out if this is right for you and also figuring out if the profession is going to be able to hold your attention for a lengthy career. I will say burn out is real for all of the professions you listed, including speech. Kids are fun for sure! While each kid is unique, I have found that therapy for me gets a little rote and boring. I prefer evaluation because each client is a puzzle that needs to be figured out. Just based on my experience, enjoying evaluation more than therapy is not the typical experience for SLP - most SLPs feel the opposite. I would actually ask this same question in one of the large FB groups to get more input from a variety of SLPs.

    Like another commenter said, it depends on where you live. I own a private pediatric practice and would LOVE to pay my colleague more, like the $50/hr independent contractor rate you mentioned. Pay her what she's worth as an excellent SLP with lots of experience. Heck, pay myself more as an SLP with 20+ years and the manager. But there is a lot of Medicaid in our area, AND private insurance companies reimburse Speech Therapy at rates barely above Medicaid. Medicare has better rates. So, we compromise - because we have flexibility, 1:1 therapy, we have fun, and have far less stress than in the schools. Not as secure, lower pay, no benefits, retirement is going to be tricky - but right now, I feel happier and healthier. Worth it!

    Thank you so much for sharing this! There were several points I agree with you on. Specifically how, in the school setting, we get lumped into the teacher salary and not compensated enough. I agree with many other commenters that you definitely aren't getting paid enough, especially because you are bilingual. I do appreciate your candidness about this topic. No one does talk about it so I hate getting asked in an interview what my desired salary is. I never know what is good enough. I only have 3 years of experience and my last year's salary through a contract company working at a school district in the south suburbs of Chicago making 58k, so yeah...I think you should be making more.

    • @SarahWuSLP
      @SarahWuSLP  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the support. I never really thought about it, but I was for sure not getting paid enough. One thing I didn't mention was that I worked extremely part time for a school district last school year and I was paid the equivalent of $58k salary (when you multiplied what I was paid part-time into a full-time salary). So that was during my 14th year as an SLP :(

    Salary depends sooo much on where you live. I think based on financial transparency laws, all school districts have to post their salary schedules. I've found there's not a lot of wiggle room to demand more in a school setting--maybe you can get a few steps added but there is not usually consideration for extra skills such as being bilingual. I'm in a rural area and the very highest someone can make in my district according to the salary schedule is $67,800. That's with 32 years of experience and 48 credits past the masters degree. So, it's hard to hear that some people in their CF year are making $10K more than our highest. But my house payment is much lower as well. Give and take I guess.

    • @SarahWuSLP

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I am wondering how much cost of living affects what you are offered where you live. I live in Oregon but if I were to move to Washington, just a few hours away, I could make around $40,000 more a year due to cost of living (in the Seattle area). Also, I am a bilingual SLP as well but I honestly don't know how much more I should be making for my extra skill. I wish we could be more transparent about this so we know how much to negotiate for on our salaries.

    • @SarahWuSLP

      I think you are right that where you live impacts how much you get paid. In the video description I link to two articles. One is the Glassdoor reference for the average salary for SLPs. The second is the average speech pathologist salary by state. There is variability, but still most are higher than I have reached.

      I'm sorry, I'm very busy right now. Reach out to ASHA.org and ask for their assistance. They will make sure you are certified. Good luck!

    Yes, a masters degree is more than a bachelors degree. Your comments just threw classroom teachers under the bus. You came off as a snob because your training 'is so clinical'...'my masters degree blah blah'. You change jobs A LOT. You focus on salary A LOT. I see no love for the children or your job. Time for you to go...you're burned out. 🔥

      Hi, I'm sorry you see it that way. Yes, I did say that regarding the speech therapy masters degree. I feel like I can say that because I'm currently enrolled in a teachers masters program so I can make a direct comparison. I find it much easier to be in a teachers masters program because the work is less challenging for me. The speech therapy masters that I completed over 15 years ago was much more difficult because the people I have to learn to treat have complex needs (autism, traumatic brain injury, aphasia post-stroke, special education etc). While I will continue to hold the opinion you object to, I believe that one thing I did not consider is that being in my 40s and doing a masters is different than doing a masters in my 20s. I'm more knowledgeable and have had a lot more work and life experience. Yes, I do change jobs and I do focus on salary. Being satisfied at work is important and I don't think anyone should stay in a job that doesn't meet their needs, hence this video. It's okay to make changes: it's your life. Have a great day
