To me this whole album is a journey through the night. Wandering around a big lifeless city at an unholy hour, patchy rain, frosty and feeling so incredibly tired - but unable to find comfortable sleep. Stumbling upon the bright fluorescent lights of an empty McDonalds restaurant briefly jolts you out of your delirium - before again descending back into the murky darkness. A beautiful little song.

It's like re-encountering someone that was once very important in your life, you both are older and look older now and wonder how it would have been if you stood close for all these years. You're frustrated because you feel there was supposed to be a bigger and deeper story between both of you, but now it's nothing but a broken story and time won't be able to change that. When you talk to that person you can't help but feel that the chemistry that once was very rich between you and her/him is lost now...

Burial knows how much his audience has been hurt by life... In 1999 I was 26 years old and I was practically homeless in London .. sleeping on my mates sofa for months ... I can remember sometimes being in a KFC or some fast food joint late at night lost and alone . .. it was a sad , scary and lonely time in my life .. ..this song and Nightbus perfectly sum up how i was feeling all those years ago X

This is exactly what it feels like to be 28 and remember the relationships you had many many years ago in which you told each other "I love you." But now you haven't had any slightest contact in so many years. If you accidently saw each other on the streets you wouldn't even say hello. What a completely bizarre world we live in.
You gave up on relationships and now you just become more and more lonely the older you become. Even worse: you can't even remember what love felt like. This song sounds like blurred memories of love.

I'm currently sood outside a McDonalds.
Alone.
I lost all my friends recently, we used to hang out here.
But now, I'm here, all alone.
I quite like being alone, honestly. I must say, as an introvert, although I enjoy solitude, enjoy being by myself, enjoy doing my own thing without social responsibility, I do feel loneliness. I do miss the times I used to come to McDonalds with my friends, after a day out in the city, going to the cinema, shopping, just having a chat, having fun.
I guess, while I stand here, in Bristol, UK, outside a McDonalds, reminiscing on those times, I'm a different person now, and I can't relive those friendships and those events of my past.
I would like some friends again, though, it would be rather nice.
Ultimately, I'd like go out with them, where I no longer feel like I don't fit in, where social anxiety isn't a struggle, where I'm no longer an introvert. Maybe, just maybe, one day I can rejoice with people in a McDonalds again.

You feel protective of people, because no matter who we are, we all return to quite a vulnerable place, a flat, mates, a family, a room or whatever. You can see through all that stuff, a lot of young people artificially take on adult issues, that have maybe been pushed at them, or maybe they’re living out an adult relationship, proper life issues, maybe their family isn't looking out for them anymore, other serious stuff that you can't take lightly. Very few songs can make me feel so emotional that I actually shed a tear, but this is one of them. As someone who was born and raised in London, something about this album and this song in particular feels nostalgic and really captures the feeling of my late teens-early 20's roaming around the city during the night with friends, trying to make sense of the world as we adjust to adulthood
My favorite moment on the entire record, it's haunted me since I first heard it. Every time I hear this phrase in another context, I hear it again in my head...

I can't believe it's been 13 years since I heard this album for the first time... It sounds even better now, but I guess it's me being older
When this came out, the ex-Mrs. decided she “wanted her life back”. I became a penniless single parent of 2 kids. This album was my soundtrack. Now they’re both in college. I still feel the same emotions when I hear this though, I’ll never forget those first few years after she left and never showed her face again. Thank you Burial.✌️

Obviously, I’ve been long familiar with Burial. About 5 years ago I was seeing Bring Me The Horizon with one of my friends. While the stagehands were setting up for BMTH, a veryyy familiar song was playing. She looked it up on Shazam, “Burial- In McDonald’s?”. I couldn’t help but smile.
