Welcome, in this segment I am busy applying the aztec dummy masks on the saucer top to achieve the painted on paneled look of the Enterprise from STTMP.
There is some info about the masking set and how to apply them during the video.
The painting is started on the panels near the end and the results are really nice.

Boyd, these videos are really outstanding! It is so helpful to watch you go through this step by step. Makes it look a little less daunting. :)

Actually with these, they are so intricate in shape that it is almost a miracle to get them from the sheet to the surface without them getting twisted or otherwise messed up.

The paint I'm using is from my own line of Cosmic Colors paints. There are other types of pearls available though if you look around on the net.

Boyd. I had a friend of mind that did not get the aztecs for some reason but he took wide mask tape drawed it on the roll the used a model knife to cut out his own. I'll see what you come up with and maybe go with my buddies idea or if you happen to pull a rabbit out of your hat. lol

This is really helpful. Thanks a lot. I just purchased the Polar Lights 1:350 TOS Enterprise, and I'm hoping I can find an Aztek Dummy mask set for it.

Thanks for the tips on the decals. I'm gonna start working on the aztecs for the jjprise in the next month. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

The soapy water thing sounds cool, and if it helps remove them later that would be an added bonus. ThePaintingClinic had the finish on his Reliant ruined when he tried to remove the Aztek masks, and maybe something like this can prevent that.

I'll get to the Runabout sometime but I have several ahead of it.
I may look into doing an interior for it then.

I built a lot of models of planes, starship, tanks, cars, etc when I was a kid, but nothing so complex.
I've had an urge in recent months to scratch build a 6-8 foot Normandy SR2 from mass effect with lights, moving parts, sounds and all. I think it would be a fun challenge

I've just started playing Mass Effect 2 after completing Andromeda and wanting to play the original trilogy. Did you ever start that scratch build?

Oy, had I known about the soap technique years ago when using the Aztec dummies on my 1/350 I wouldn't have gone all cross eyed laying them down. Never did finish them.

If you don't want to deal with the set up time on the vinyl mask after spraying the surface with water..you can just stick the vinyl to the back of your hand before placing it on the model..that will kill just enough of the adhesive to be able to work with them.

This is turning out amazing. Definitely making me rethink my approach to my own Enterprise. Could you tell me who the supplier of the pearlescent paints is? My model shop only carries spray can versions. Would be truly grateful.

Your model building skills are off the chain. Great work! I am building my kit now. This is my first big model build. Im going to use the aztec decals that came with the model. Was wondering do I paint the white pearl over the decals? Or put the aztec decals over top the white pearl then clear coat it? If I paint the pearl white over the aztec decals, will I still be able to see them? U have probably answered this question before. But I cant seem to find it.

The Aztec decals are now water slide so you just apply them and you don't have to do much painting and you put the registry numbers over them.

And you can paint the decals with a small brush so that you still get the Pearlescent effect. Then once the paint is dry, apply the Aztec Decals to the model.

Your videos are fascinating and you do amazing work. I'm new to this hobby and I'm starting with the 1/1400 Clear Enterprise D. I would like to do similar lighting to what you did. What lighting kit (or kits) can you recommend for that model. Thank you and keep up the great work :)

i would cut out the hole panel of the mask and stick it to the model and then remove the sections from the mask, that way your not putting each little piece on bit by bit, leaving each section in the center of each panel.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem doing it that way is you can't keep it all in one piece. It will come apart. I found a better set of masks which has better material, not so sticky, and it uses a clear tape transfer method. You basically apply the clear transfer tape, lift the masks off the paper and then apply them all in one piece on the model. Rub them down and then lift off the clear tape leaving the masks behind. They are available at www.orbitaldrydock.com

Unfortunately, almost the same thing happened here. They are almost impossible to pull off when they have been on the model for a day or two which is just about how long it takes to put them on. I have had to remove them all (royal pain in the A_--!) And start all over again. I'm going to show what happened and the fix in the next video.

The aztec decals that came with my kit looks like it wallpapers over it. Dont know if this is the finish color. Or paint the pearl over them to get the finished color. Thanks for any help. Which is desperately needed at this point.

hey, so what kind of blue pearl airbrush paint did you use to paint the aztecs? and did you mask off the side of the saucer as well?

    • @TrekWorks

Vernon Hassell The paints are lacquer based polytranspar. I get them from Mckensey Taxidermy online.

I was wondering where I might get that pattern kit you have there. I have had the same USS Enterprise model you havel on my shelf for quite some time and I am interested in building it, however I have never had much luck with the large decals like the ones the model comes with. I would much rather paint the model and I definitely want it to have that fresh deck plate look to it. Also would you recommend a matte base coat before painting with a pearlescent Aztec pattern?

  • @RippleFX411
