  • In the wee hours of Sunday morning Kate was stricken down with partial paralysis. In an emergency vet visit I learned that she had a "commonly occurring disease" called Canine Idiopathic vestibular disease! Luckily it was a "suddenly occurring disease " she could recover from on her own rather quickly with just medication from the vet. Still, what the heck is this strange sudden disease anyway. Watch and find out.
    HEY THERE, hi there, Ho there, we're as happy as can be! My name is Mark and my "girls" and I are Dog Gone RV'n We are a New Dog-Travel - Channel started back in 2019. My "girls" and I boondock across the west of the United States exploring the lands and its history, finding fascinating places to explore and camp. My two "girls" are my travel companions on this journey. Sara an Irish Setter and Katie a Border Collie both 12 yrs old with their own unique personalities, keep things lively and interesting on the road in our very cozy and compact 19' campervan RV. In the past most of my traveling experiences have involved my lifetime of backpacking and hiking in the mountains of Western Washington with car camping, B&Bs and my 1986 4Runner build out along with my military service aboard a Fast Attack Nuclear Submarine exploring the Pacific.
    WHEN I RETIRED from my Aero Space job of 23+ yrs. and kicked the soul - crushing rat-race to the gutter. I was tired of the falls and winters up north here which have constantly been getting worse with their dreary long steel-gray days of damp coldness, drizzle, rain, pacific windstorms and heavy snows so I decided to buy a class B RV! Now, the "girls" and I are Semi-Nomads as we travel the wide-open west in search of where the "sun went!" We may still have gray days and rain where we travel but not for a 6-month streach like back home, LOL.
    WE TRAVEL IN A 2008 19' Pleasure-Ways Ascent RV. A small, compact and nimble RV that I bought in 2018 after my lengthy research to find the perfect RV for my lifestyle plans. I now travel the country with my "girls" as semi-nomads since I have retired. We boondock together across the western territories looking for beautiful and interesting places to explore and enjoy throughout the wide-open American West.
    join us on our epic journey of adventure, discovery and exploration, won’t you? What you learn may have you rethinking your own life goals and will widen your own world of travel.

    Also when they get this if you will cover thier eyes firmly so they can sleep this really really helped my dog get through this. Keep the meds in thier ears and the motion sickness meds and thier eyes covered as much as possible and lay with them all of this will get them through this tough time

      Luckily, my dog only experienced long term hind quarters weakness. Her eye "vibrations" cleared up in a few days and her "drunken sailor" walking cleared up with time each time. She didn't show any other problems some others have reported such a nausea. I have noticed that her sense of smell is not what it was. However, I tend to consider that according to the veterinarian as being part of her becoming "elderly" with a touch of border Collie pure breed genetic traits that can occur.

      She is getting better though. On Sunday the 13th it will be the 2-week mark from when she had this surprise disease. The Veterinarian says it should be over and she should be back to "normal" by then.

      Kate has a strong will and hates being left out of the action, so it is a strong motivator to her to get well. Her left rear leg is still a bit weak but I do see steady improvement in it.

    My 12 year old furbaby was diagnosed with this just a couple of days ago. It came on so suddenly. It had gotten so severe that I ended up rushing her to our local animal emergency room to be seen. Her symptoms prior to the ER visit were as follows.... she had stopped eating, her head tilt was extreme..with one ear straight up the other one towards the ground. Her eyes looked as if they were jumping all around, she could not walk without falling over onto her side on the floor. She was very wobbly. It looked like she would just drift off gazing into space. I was so terrified. My mom had to drive me and my furbaby to the animal ER because I was beside myself. I literally thought she was dying. After having to wait 5 hours to be seen by the er vet, we were finally brought to the back. At 1st he thought she may have had a stroke. But with further examination..he came to this diagnosis. She's been on 4 different types of medication given to her from the er vet. This is her 2nd day of taking them. The only improvement I have really noticed is she's not falling over quite as bad. I have literally been in the same room with her since this has happened. She looks so scared...like she's saying to me..."Mom, what's going on with my head, why am i falling over everytime I stand up?" 😭 This is breaking my heart. I pray she gets better soon. It's so difficult to see her this way.
    And I send out prayers to all of your furbabies for a speedy recovery!

      Kate has had two "sudden attacks" of this idiopathic type. See our 2nd video on this during our 6 month road trip. My vet was able to find out quickly thru a few simple tests that it was not a "stroke" or a brain issue. He told me dogs recover from this within 4-5 weeks just fine but may be left with a head tilt. The only "expensive medicine" he "suggested" was sea sick pills for balance and nausea. Kate has successfully recovered from two attacks about a year apart with a "hardly" noticeable head tilt but this 2nd attack left her hind quarters weaker But she still can walk, trot and attempt to jump to catch toys.
      Like you, l was scared to death, having raised her since 10 weeks old to now nearly 14 yrs! All I can say is do your RESEARCH ON LINE AND YOU TUBE VIDEOS. After decades of dealing with various veterinarians, l believe some veterinarians are like lawyers. They "prey" on your feelings to make extra money! Sad to say. Your pup will recover. Just be patient and let her rest, and in her own time, she will "heal herself."

      I am going through this with my almost 8 year old jack Russell terrier. We are 3 to 4 days into it. His symptoms are not as prevalent as I have seen on the videos with other dogs, but he does have symptoms. I took him to the vet and we’re treating him like he has otitis, but if these leftover symptoms don’t go away, I’m ready to get bloodwork and maybe even an MRI of his brain

    TY my dog has had this 2.5 weeks now. It is swings and roundabouts she is having probs eating and drinking she just cannot coordinate her reflexes to do either properly so I feed her and give her water regularly over a syringe. Extremely restless and wandering aimlessly around and zoning out. Not to mention the panting. I hope that she will recover from it am glad your dog is it gives me hope. My girl is only 10 years old

      I hope you had your dog examined by a vet to be sure something more serious is not going on. My girl has had two attacks of this "Vestibular Disease," which has left her with a slight head tilt and weak hindquarters that made it difficult to go up or down stairs without stumbling. She still acts as if things are normal, but l have to watch the ground surface so she does not stumble on uneven ground and help her up and down from the RV or car now.

      Scared the hell out of me when Katie woke me up in the middle of the night crying when her whole hind quarters went "limp" on her and she could not get up on all fours anymore! Kate recovered from hers within 3 weeks but was left with weakened hind quarters but she still is frisky. Nothing keeps her spirt down. Hope your best friend will recover more in the future.

    What medice was used if any?

    • @doggonervn211
      @doggonervn211  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have not had to use any medicine at all. Seems "some" Doctors and or Veterinarians are always pushing drugs in a "subliminal" way BEFORE there are any SECONDARY SYMTOMS to worry pet parents.
      Like Lawyers, they can work on your emotional state. I use my 3-volume edition of Canine Medicine published by the American Veterinary Publication to FIRST increase my knowledge of the symptoms and add to what I might "learn?" off the internet. So, when I go to my veterinarian, I can understand more of what he says and have some "intelligent" questions for him.
      I hope you dog recovers quickly, mine has gone thru it 3X and is OK except for being left with a weaken hind quarters but she is still up and trotting along side of me. Dogs are stronger than many people today that just become "victims" of their lives.

    How is Kate now?

    • @doggonervn211
      @doggonervn211  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Kate is doing much better. Her hind quarters are weaker that the 2nd time, but it still does not keep her down. Her recovery has taken longer this time about two months to where she can walk and not fall over or down. I am worried how many of these she can survive. Thank you for asking though.
