Help! My Puppy Is A Bully And Plays Too Rough

  • It’s important to realize when a puppy might not be interacting appropriately with another puppy or dog. Some puppies can be bullies, play far too roughly, or be overly exuberant and unable to read the room. We’re covering the steps you can take to help a puppy with appropriate interactions and what to know about puppy play.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • What I learned from a Jack Russel Terrier puppy and Border Collie puppy in the 90s.
    • How puppies learn when they are playing with littermates and that young puppies can show calming signals.
    • The reasons that puppies might be bullies including when they leave the litter.
    • About my experiences with Buzz and his discomfort with other dogs.
    • How Tater-Salad had an inappropriate play style when he came to live with us.
    • What to look for when you take your puppy to a play and socialization class.
    • When to use a positive interrupter to help your pup with appropriate interactions.
    • What to do if you have a softer puppy who is getting pushed around.
    • About puppies who badger your adult dog and how to keep older dogs safe.
    • That most adult dogs have a limited time where they give a puppy a “free pass”, but others have zero- tolerance.
    • Ways to help exuberant puppies who have not yet learned to read the room.
    • How to set up your environment for success and safety for puppies and adult dogs.

Lordie woman! You have put voice to the things I could not verbalize or explain clearly. As do owners, over a lifetime, we all observe things, learn things. You clarify the criteria, give step by step instructions that are verifiable, and all this with solid logic behind it! Thank you! My dogs say “Thanks” too!

This is exactly what I needed-- I've been keeping my 11 year old kelpie safe from my 17 week old puppy.
They play bitey-face nicely and the older dog has seemingly endless patience and does self-handicap, but the puppy seems to ramp up when the old guy is getting tired.
Even when the older dog will gently correct the puppy, Pup seems to find it hilarious and romps and bows and jumps on his head harder and more.
I'm supervising them closely when they're together and when the old guy isn't having fun anymore I give him a retreat, so I'm glad we're doing some of this right.
Now just to implement the rest!!

Hi Milissa. You will find your lovely older dog is giving the puppy it's Puppy Licence to do what ever. However, as puppy's licence comes to an end, your older dog may tell puppy off more forcefully. It isn't your older boy getting nasty - he is just teaching manners. I would probably remove puppy to pen when he starts getting over the top.

Thank you, thank you for this information! I have a six year old white shepherd who is very gentle. We got a new puppy, a Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, after our older small dog died. This breed is active and very smart, almost like a border collie. He was 8 weeks old when we got him. He learns very quickly, but he was relentless with our shepherd, biting her on the face to the point he drew blood and trying to hump her, we did the aahh, aaaah. He would stop and look at us, then restart. I couldn’t understand why the shepherd didn’t correct him. As soon as we started the positive recall, which worked very well, even when he had a paper towel that he had found and wouldn’t give up 😂, I realized that my shepherd thought we were correcting her with the aaah aaahs. Within a minute she was correcting him gently and the puppy got the message. Yay! Success! I felt kind of stupid when i realized what we had done. I will be watching all of your videos, this puppy is to be a therapy dog when he grows up.

Wow - I looked at some puppies and the breeder took the mother away from the pups at six weeks - she said that the mothers have had enough of them by then and that she’d been breeding for years. She gave the pups to their new homes at eight weeks - I think it is more convenience for the breeder than what is right for the pups. Awesome podcast thank you!

I like to keep my puppies until 10 weeks and trust me it is A TON OF WORK from 8-10 weeks but that is the time I see the mother discipline the puppies the very most and the very firmest. It is important that the puppies start being separated during this time and learn how to be confident away from the other puppies so it makes even more work for me. I try to have them all going home having learned Crate Games and ItsYerChoice and sit to go outside and most be potty trained…but when I have a big litter it is so much extra work that I can understand most breeders just not having the time or ability to do it. I have 2 full time team members that work here with me at the house making this possible. Plus I only breed like once every 4 years if that.

@@RaptorsGirl - I’m sure it is a ton of work and that’s what we take on when we make the choice to to do anything with animals. I’ve looked after litters of kittens and that was pretty full on I imagine puppies would be that and a ton more lol. I’ve always had big dogs and horses, now I have a wee dog ( and most likely a pup coming in due time) and cats. It’s a whole other ball game and I feel like I’m learning all over again. Your podcasts are so helpful.

Awesome information - My lab puppy is the ultimate BULL in the china shop. She does not read the room at all, she gets more and more wild. Will try to incorporate these suggestions into her interactions. Unfortunately - she has had interactions with elderly dogs that want NO part of her. Still looking for a same energy level puppy or young adult that she can learn the cues from.

Really appreciating this episode! I am in the preparation stages of hopefully getting my first puppy (and dog!) this spring, and I have an older cat at home. One of my main priorities is obviously making sure that my cat stays safe and confident in her home, and knowing how to handle a boisterous puppy will definitely help with that. Would love more content on interactions between dogs and other species (especially cats, obviously, but also rabbits, chickens, etc would be very interesting). All the best from Sweden!

    Great tips 🙏🏽
Recently got a 5 lb, 13 week puppy. He’s super cuddly and generally sweet, wants to play, etc but I’m noticing him lunging and growling at other dogs. Plus when my older dogs try’s to discipline him puppy doesn’t listen and instead gets more aggressive and excited. I’m separating them if this happens now, older dog
    Tolerates him.
What’s the best ways to curb the excitement he gets from other dogs challenging him and is socializing him more often while he is young, with proper supervision, enough? He does seem to listen to me a bit and allows me “discipline” him..but obviously I want him to read room and be well mannered with others.

I almost tear up here. My rehomed chihuahua mix is now three years old, came to us when she was seven months old and she does not play well (separated from her parents young, with her siblings, used as playthings for children and toddlers). Our older dog (now smaller) get hounded and her eases chewed all the time. I didn’t realize how stressed my older one were until recently and have trouble finding a strategy to change this. The young one is also reactive around other dogs so we have few chances to have safe and positive play. The free pass from our older one was long, I can’t even say when this became so stressful for our oldest.

OMG! Susan this podcast/ TH-cam video would of been such of help a year ago, when I decided to rescue my Lab and I had my senior Greet Pyrenees X Husky ( Onyx). Onyx was sick and the extra time he gave me was so appreciated, so we could make extra memories together and more from our buckets list. Bob-Marley being from a seizes from a puppy mills wasn’t getting any cue what so ever from Onyx, and being sick I was constantly having to redirect or being in the middle of it which was exhausting quite frankly. Now Onyx being gone for almost a year I can tell you in Onyx last week of life, I saw Bob-Marley change and mature and being so gentle with Onyx, was always by his side and became very gentle, it’s almost like Onyx was telling Bob-Marley his responsibility once he will be gone. After Onyx passed Bob-Marley was a different puppy after and in the mist of thing stumbled upon your videos which helped me a greatly with Bob-Marley and I have been following you since. I used to be in the homeschool the dog but had to cancel due to financial reasons at the time. Now having started my own dog daycare / boarding I can tell your videos are so helping on top of a few others courses I took to get to that point. But every morning with my coffee the first thing that comes on is shape by dogs or dogs that. I wish I wouldn’t never had canceled my subscription but will get back at it at some point for sure. Thank you so much for being there helping us the community of crazy dog lovers who just wants dogs to have their best life possible in a human world that can be even for us complicated to understand!

I was in that puppy class where the instructor just let everyone loose, when I said something about not leaving my puppy alone she accused me of being a "helicopter mom". Needless to say I never went back to that class. Such a shame too, because one of the larger dogs jumped on a smaller dog, who ran under a chair and was scared to death. I always hoped that little puppy was ok.

Hi Susan, I am so glad I have found your video podcasts as they have been very helpful!! I have a behavioral question regarding how my 2 year old neutered male dog Alfred interacts with unneutered male puppies. He has now encountered 4 puppies that he was very mean to, unprovoked (He did not hurt them, just made a lot of noise, showed a lot of teeth, and pushed them around until I called him off, it was certainly more than the quick correction that you described). I thought maybe he just didn't like puppies, but he has encountered several young female puppies that he is very sweet and gentle with and altered puppies (usually rescues) that he also plays very nicely with only resorting to quick corrections if they are being rude. After the first couple of times I thought maybe he had a thing against doodles, because those were the puppies he would always target (turns out a lot of doodle owners wait until their puppies are at least 6 months before neutering, which is probably a good thing health wise, so no judgement here) and one day he went after a bull dog puppy, sure enough male and unneutered. He has met at least 5 unneutered male adult dogs, one of which is a buddy that he loves to play with...so it is just the male unneutered puppies. I wish I had a better understanding of why he dislikes them so much, especially when none of the puppies he went after did anything outwardly rude. In the meantime, I will be working more on positive interruptions. Thanks!!

He’s now 5 months and still has trouble reading the room especially with little/softer puppy’s. I see so much about how his socialization window has now closed. Can he still learn to read other dogs body at this age or is he just now rehearsing bad behavior?

Great content as always ! I was just wondering what your advise would be on the same subject but with an adult dog. I adopted a 4yo cane corso-rottweiler mix last summer from a shelter. She had had no prior education whatsoever and obviously was not socialized properly (if at all) with other animals, let alone dogs ... I've manage to catch her up on general obedience and education (work's never over but she's already doing great ;-) but not (yet) on socialization. She's anxious about any dog walking towards her directly, can be reactive on leash when she's taken by surprise or it's too close for confort (which can vary depending on circumstances of course), doesn't understand their communication, etc. I did manage to socialize her with 3 male dogs, one of them a beagle that is luckily a good match to her playstyle but most of the times, when I find a chill dog she can try to meet calmly, she bullies them until they tell her off which she of course takes the wrong way and then s**t hits the fan. I do interrupt her every time she behaves inappropriately but so far she doesn't seem to be getting it, and the fact that it can escalate really quickly, sometimes in an instant doesn't help. I'm still holding on to the hope that she could still learn but I'm mostly afraid it might be too late ... Anyway I'd love to have your opinion (or that of others who maybe went through them same thing with their own dog). Thanks a lot!!

Hi Susan! This podcast has been so great as a first time puppy owner! I have a question about the adult correction to the puppy. I have a now 4 month westie who loves to play with other dogs, but he gets so intense so quickly. I'm having trouble redirecting him when he's playing with other dogs even while doing recall practice and games. Is this just part of the breed? A few times, our adult dog has given him a stronger correction, which I didn't interfere with, but then the puppy overreacts and comes back at the adult dog. If I try to grab the puppy to remove him and give him a chance to calm down, he directs the reaction to me! Am I letting the play get too intense before stepping in? Is this a sign that he is an aggressive puppy? (He had 4 litter mates but he was the largest, though not the most outgoing). Thank you again!

The adult is a sweet dog. The puppy jumps and barks if the older one tries to get away. Actually attacks him. It's only been a week and they are getting to a point of biting and fighting. Barriers just make the puppy bark. It's so disappointing and exhausting.

Ooooo my Golden Retriever puppy 3 months old likes to bully me. He will rip and roar and cry like he is dying if he cannot have access to my room, he sat on my head, then proceeded to nip my hair . Wrinkled his nose and bark/growled.
Well I moved his stairs to my bed until he would obey the sit, leave it, etc. he has improved a lot but has a bit to go. So history on this litter. The breeder was farming these dogs out for 600 bucks a piece at six weeks old. He had 34 puppies at one time trying to sell them.
None of these puppies had their mom around. The moms were in another area. Then the guy said he bought day old bread at 40 cents a loaf and mixed it with their puppy chow. 😳 I felt sick. I took the dog home and I have been trying to socialize him and teach him.

Hi! What about if my dog is about a year old and just now needing to learn how to interact properly with other dogs? He is definitely the bully but I got him when he was 10 months old and we are still struggling with it.
We are a single dog household but want him to be able to interact with my brothers dog and other family dogs but he just isn’t getting the ques that dogs are putting down? Any suggestions since they don’t regularly interact?

    Hi Susan!
My puppy is a pit and my adult dog is a shihtzu small breed.
She will only put him in his place when they are outside. But indoors, the adult dog will just run away. How can I correct this, or do I just keep them separated??
    Thank you

I have a Boston terrier puppy and my dad has a French Bulldog puppy and they play but idk if my dog is aggressive or not. The frenchie will jump on my puppy and then she’ll growl and snap at him before chasing him around to bite him on the butt or grab him by the neck skin. The Frenchie thinks they’re playing so he keeps doing it but based on my Boston’s reaction I don’t know if she’s annoyed and acting aggressive to get him away or if they’re actually playing. I’ve never had two puppies together so I’m not sure if I should intervene.

It's still confusing to me when my puppy also gets bullied as well as bullies.. I guess I still feel like my Christi just likes to play rough. For sure smaller dogs should be on the other side, but they like to play rough too sometimes! 0h what to do..

I am interesting also how to introduce my new dog to the cat. The dog is big breed (Dobermann) and it is obviously will be bigger than my cat when they will meet. My cat is old and has well educated, but like to sit with me when I work or eat and meet me infront of the door. How is better to manage their relationships without jeleous (my dog will not meet me and will not with me all the time, but will be in crate or playpen).

I have 2 beagles and one is 8 months and the other is 10 weeks the older one goes at the small one non stop. The older one plays rougher but I feel the little one is getting bullied. She just won't stop. I'll put the older one in the pen so the little one gets some time to play gental but as soon as I let the older one out she bee lines to the baby puppy. I'm scared for the little one.

So, what about adult dogs that only had one other dog,, an adult dog to play with when they were a puppy? My 8 yo aussie had that situation and never had any training. She's very reactive to other dogs when on the leash, but not as much or at all, when off leash. I'm not sure what to do or how to go about training her to just relax around other dogs when on walks.

My Elsas mum is quite dog aggressive. Elsa was a bully when she was at with mum, dad and the other 2 pups. When we brought her home, she really mellowed out with Seven (as he is much more chill) and now shes just super social. Her sister, Panda, stayed with mum and dad, and is now aggressive towards Elsa, but super friendly towards Seven. She seems to have aggression towards other females, but is ok with males. 100% agree they do learn. Its such a complex relationship. Zelda (Mum) doesn't like other dogs, Dad (Link) is quite friendly, but not to males (or at least Seven). Panda friendly to males, aggressive to females. Mola (3rd puppy) i think is pretty chill now. Elsa Super social, friendly to all. so Zelda doesn't like Elsa or Seven. Link Likes Elsa, doesn't like Seven, and Panda, doesn't like Elsa, loves Seven. it is what it is. Seven tolerates Elsa, she jumps on him a lot but he does play with her. If he needs a break he will climb into the loft bed in my office and sleep as she can't climb stairs.... yet.
We have a pen for her if we need her to chill, and we have Sevens travel crate that she likes to hide in that he doesn't use much.
Edit: A bull in a china shop actually isn't what you would expect. Mythbusters did a segment on it and found that the saying wasn't what you expect, ultimately nothing was broken. Worth the watch.

What if a 1 year old is badgering the 10 week old new puppy? She is literally all over him she's a Australian cattle dog mix (mutt) her instincts are to pull the puppy's back leg bite his ear (not hard or being vicious just playing but way to rough)

Good job... Tho I think more demonstrations of the behaviors would be better rather than all the verbal descriptions... Easier to follow video of how to correct etc than listen to verbal descriptions. Beckman is a good example of how this is done.

I'm REALLY struggling with this... My 3 year old still has the puppy license up for Siren - who is 7 mths and deaf. She just DOES not stop playing even when he's trying to get away. They both are capable of reaching the same heights, so can't do a jump over/up to keep them away from each other... so are using gates...... And then he just cries because he wants to play again. I can't do any verbal positive reinforcer, because Siren is completely deaf, but she WILL choose me over him... I'm going to start being more interupptive because Pixel (the 3 year old) is just not correcting her in a way she either understands - or respects... She simply ignores his behaviours, no matter how "aggressive" it looks. He just gets louder and louder and louder with his growls, which annoys us more than Siren, as she can't hear them, but can see them, and STILL keeps pouncing.... Hoping we can start some form of resolution and management

We made a mistake right off the bat by not using the togetherness thing. They were great at first then when Thor 5 months old now got comfortable he started being a bully to 6 year old golden Jake and Jake will not correct him he has only done that 3 times so far what do we do since we did it wrong?
Jake will play with Thor but then Thor gets to excited and plays to hard. He has put a bleeding scratch from his teeth on Jake’s ear and scraps on his body he always goes for the ears the legs which I know is his hearing action I love Thor but I am getting frustrated and Jake does not need it what am I doing wrong
Sorry this is so long the collar would not work he gets more aggressive sometimes
