Very useful. I have an older 21 with a cast part on the bottom that retains the quick release bar. When reinserting I found that you needed to have this screwed in on top of the half nut. Essentially an exact reversal of your disassembly.
l restored a 112 and a 110 last week, great old vices, my 110 may have been made around the time of ww2, it's cast steel not cast iron and there meant to be unbreakable, both was in good condition the 112 l sold keep the 110.
Just picked one up for £35.10 on eBay but had to drive 50 miles to collect it. Thanks for the heads up on taking it apart and to the partner for the filming and you of course 😀
Great clear video and presentation. Having not accent helps😜. I guess that we were brought up in the same town or very close! I had been looking for a vice for years. I went to look at a house a friend had bought and was keen to look in the garage ( you never know, there might be a mk II Jag in there,! No joy, but there was a Record No. 23 that I asked for and he said he didn't want it! It was in a far worst state than yours in the video and someone in the past must have had the quick release mechanism out and set it up with the thumb hook on the other side😱. It still worked but I was having a nightmare getting it back together . I watched your video and voila it was a piece of cake. Now I will take it apart again and paint it as yours is. Many thanks.

I’ve saved this video. It will come in handy I picked up one of these yesterday in fairly good condition but with a little surface rust. Going to strip it down and repaint it. May get it shot blasted to clean it up before repainting it though. Good video thanks
Far be it from me to urinate on your bonfire TD, but if you had drilled the holes in your bench a bit nearer the edge, placing the fixed jaw of the vice just hanging over the edge of the bench you would make the vice a lot more usable allowing workpieces longer than the height of the bench to be mounted vertically.

Thanks for watching and commenting. The fixings on the video are 16mm socket caps that I had laying around. Don't use them though as the heads get full of swarf. Use ordinary bolts instead, 14mm would be a good option as the 16mm are a bit snug in the vice fixing holes. Check out ebay👍🏼
Great little video mate, looks like your work in progress has been going for a little while already lol, so shiney it looks nearly brand new, just picked a No.23 myself for £20 that needs a good clean up, quick release works O.K but this will come in invaluable to help strip down and clean and repaint ??, what did you use to polish all the metal up or did it come all nice and shiney, If you repaint it will you use Roudel Blue or Hamerite , Roundel is supposed to be enamel and is the proper Record colour, I always found Hammerite to be a bit soft, any answers will make my task easier ? Very good coverage of that quick release will make the strip down a lot easier to do, thanks
I picked this vice up from ebay for £50.. It was in good order as you can see, it just needed a clean and a bit of tlc. Cleaned it all with some bog standard degreaser, handle was made shiny with emery tape and the jaws got a quick polish with some white compound. As for repainting I doubt I'll do that now as it gets quite a lot of use... That said, I've cleaned up a couple of smaller vices and have used 'Roundel Blue' synthetic enamel - it's about as close as you can get to the original.

@@BestUserNameUK just bought one from Gumtree. Only 50GBP in perfect condition and 40 minutes away. I found the ones on eBay were too expensive and in worse condition. The trick is to be patient.
Hello there, great video, helped me to get the vice back together. Was just wondering if you know what bolt size you need for the front part that holds the lead screw and quick release mechanism in place. Would be much appreciated because I plan to replace those bolts on my vice

Hi Ultimate Handyman,thanks for this its been very helpful as I have been refurbishing a larger version,but have now run into problems.Your advice would be invaluable here as I am stuck.So regrettably hindsight would have helped me but I binned the original vice jaws as were in poor condition,internet search for original jaws got me no where as they cost a fortune. Local Engineers shop had a cracked foreign vice which I was able to buy jaws from ,wrong bolt spacing and a few mm shorter but would have to do.So welded up all holes in both jaws and vice body and tried to drill new ones ,no chance,I think weld heat hardened them further.Tried cobalt drill and new Dormer drill bits at low speed with oil,no luck.Problem is now I have two options; tack weld jaws to vice body, will look horrible, or try normalizing (reheating) the welded zones,have done this with B&Q gas canister but could not get to red hot heat and do not know if there is a critical temp at which I have to attain.Any suggestions please Richard Allan.
You could try grinding the welds flat, centre punch, centre drill then use a carbide tipped drill bit (available from Amazon and other places) Google search. The jaws and where they fit are hardened cast steel. I tried countersinking the holes further on my vice jaws and ruined 3 countersink bits. If you're looking for red heat butane won't touch them, get a MAPP gas torch (the plumbers 'weapon' of choice). Sadly they are not cheap, probably on a par with new Record jaws. Let me know how you get on.
Thank you very much TD. I looked up those drill bits,good reviews,have not heard of them before,will try them out,I realize I now have to spend some cash. If my neighbor uses his OAP discount I may get some B&Q MAPP GAS however I just wondered if a Tig welder with tungsten in its collet and turned up to( warp 5) super-hot and no filler wire may introduce enough heat to soften the cast steel,my friend is a welder he may be of help,but your advice is good and is what I shall do .I enjoy your channel and value your reviews and wisdom.Will keep you posted,Richard.
This is a very informative video. Just after some advice. I’m currently restoring a odd vice. It’s a ‘rock island 1917’, it’s American (4 inch wide jaws) but it’s almost identical to a woden/record no 22 vice,I’m trying to source a the quick release mechanism for it as it’s missing. Are the quick release mechanisms the same size for the no 22 & 23? Is the lead screw on the no 23 20mm (3/4) diameter? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can’t find info anywhere for this vice. Many Thanks.

What stops the quick release sliding out the half nut guide? I’ve just bought a faulty one that needed re assembling but when I use the quick release I can pull it too far and it disengages and unwinds the spring tension.
I have a record 24 vice with quick release, the problem I have is the quick release handle and spring will turn and release, just before I put slight pressure on closing the vice. Any suggestions will be appreciated
Have you tried taking it apart and re-assembling it? Sometimes the half-nut does not fully engage with the lead screw, one or both of these could be worn?
ive had a no23 for years ,but it never has worked properly, when you go to do the vice up tight it slips and releases , i cant seem to sus out why it does this, can you shine any light on this issue
I can only assume that the lead screw and/or half nut are worn? Have you tried taking it apart, cleaning and reassembling? Also make sure all fasteners are tight. TBH not a lot can go wrong with Record vices - excessive wear is usually the issue.
Another thought is that the lead screw and half nut are not fully engaging with one another, which could possibly be due to the quick release mechanism.
Mine does that exact same thing as well. Something went pop in it when i over tightened it. Now it feels like it jumps back on the thread when you tighten. I need to dismantle it and have a look , thanks for the video i wouldn't have known where to start.

Instead of holding the quick release under tension when you are reassembling it I recommend the use of a cable tie.

Look at the video around the 7.35 mark. There's a large washer on the end of the lead screw that prevents what you describe.

Hi TD do you know why the quick release on my 23 only works to close the vice not open it, before I start stripping down.
