  • Here is a video of a corn field in Southern Wisconsin where Adam Lasch planted his interseeding at the same time as the corn was emerging. The rest of the details are in the video. Circling back on this video do you know if Adam has continued interseeding his corn silage? Would love to see a follow up video sometime. A lot of dairy producers are starting to talk about the potential of these types of practice so it would be great to learn more details. Keep up the great work!

    Planting into a cover crop, let alone interseeding, I wish Illinois producers would drive over the border and start looking.

    Good stuff. I'll keep an ear open for results. Tonnage of silage, grazing days,
    that sort of thing.

    @Cover Crop Kings how did this field yield? There's a dairy farm in my county who have been using covers for 10 years and have been doing mixes for 5. He understands the benefits that sunflowers offer corn.

    @covercropkings how did it turn out?

    LOL, I have a friend that will just about demand you cut around any sunflowers (we have them as a weed) in the field because they will "make the silage stink".

    Any idea how chopping silage went as far as tonnage per acre? What percent moisture was the corn? What percent was entire silage? Do they send silage samples in to get tested for protein etc?

      I know sunflower silage has about 4% more protein and 8% more Oil then Corn Silage.

    What does it mean to 'plant it green'

      Planting Green means to plant directly into a living cover crop with a later termination date of cover

    My lord very interesting, to start diversity is good for wildlife and soil and has to be for cattle, what's the starch % and the yield in tons per acre in silage and lastly I guess dry matter should be between 23_26 %

    Why chop it for silage, why not graze in place?
    Or if you must make silage, bag it on the field edge and again graze on that field to recycle nutrients and restore soil biology?

    Was there any follow up done on this field? Would love to learn how it was seeded and what the mix percentages and lbs were etc. Could this mix be broadcast seeded and covered in liquid manure to germinate it?

    • @covercropkings539
      @covercropkings539  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be risky to try to broadcast seed some of those species. I will have Adam get on here to follow up with some of these questions! Thanks!

      That would be fantastic. I look forward to hearing his thoughts about it. Thanks!

    Cow peas are an absolute headache when they grow up the corn...I done it 3 years ago...they were a nightmare wrapping on everything!!!...soybeans are a better option...use non gmo and grow yourself to keep down cost...

    • @covercropkings539
      @covercropkings539  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the idea of Soybeans for a cover crop... but only if your not also growing them as a cash crop on those acres. We need to use these opportunities to increase diversity. We have seen the cowpeas climb but they have not shown to be an issue yet.
