Alternate row spacing on corn used to incorporate cover crops and to increase profits.

- Can we completely change how we farm? Imagine growing corn in 60 inch spacings to incorporate cover crops into the rotation. Increase profit by cycling nutrients through diversity. This would drastically help to increase water infiltration helping you to capture the moisture where it lands instead of letting run over the surface and finding the low ground which usually has plenty already. Years ago we used to put red clover and urea down in February for our winter wheat. We never sprayed it for weeds or used fungicide.
In the late 70s Penn State was planting Hairy Vetch ( 1summer for establishing) then herbicides, no till corn Vetch supplied Nitrogen, Vetch started to regrow mid Sept ( said they couldn't make Herbicide recommendations and stopped)
Going to be doing double skip cotton in order to get covers planted in between rows. Skip row has always been better or equal to solid planting in my area in West Texas. I will be waiting two months after cotton is planted before planting cover crop since cotton does not compete well like corn.
That makes sense. The more we look into this we are strongly leaning on skipping every other row so we can get a more uniform stand of cover crops to get a more consistent result in terms of weed prevention and such.
What is ones motive? Grazing a wider row will have to pay for bushels lost in the grazing with wide rows..
If not grazing? Thirties are find for Weed suppression and added soil health. Some corn varieties have far more leaves then others and that hinders growth. Timing of planting is critical as narrower rows need growth before canopy. Narrower rows suppress growth of the cover but takes off after harvest. If some growing season is left. Some prefer winter kill cover crops. That becomes a grazing issue in the spring in some areas.
Why are you assuming that there are bushels lost? There can be when things are not done properly but when done right 60's can average very similar to 30's. If Grazing it's an absolute benefit but even when not grazing the improved soil health and increased plant diversity would allow a decrease in added inputs for future crops. I agree we have experienced good luck with 30 inch covers but the added diversity we can achieve with 60's is tremendous.
It's like getting crop rotation with corn on corn.
Maybe try a more early variety dry faster so more light for the cover or some plant at 38" 👍
The reason for going to 60 is really just to utilize current equipment. I have many clients going from 22 to 44 inch corn which I am really excited about. We could also look at backing the pops way down and using a high flex hybrid. There are lots of options. The good thing is now with a lot of the smaller seed companies you can find some really good flex hybrids that are cheaper and can easily perform with the more expensive brand names.
just found your channel! where are you located? it will be fun to see corn on corn on 60" with not much inputs purchased!! $3 corn might not be so bad. lol 30's aren't working. I am doing a 60" spot next year. seeding will be done in the spring at the v-3 stage.

What do you use for chemicals and when do you apply them
We work with a lot of different farms across the midwest and we have found that different chemicals work differently everywhere so we cannot give a broad recommendation here. Thanks

I think we came to the crossroads of agriculture car for agriculture has forced all of us farmers in to economic hardships this virus is Wake woken up a sleeping giant that we've been trying to warn people for quite some time.monopolies incorporation who control our government and our policies have ruined the freedoms of democracy. To really be free we need to be independent of government. Basically self-sufficient. Our local towns had dairies, flour Mills, slaughterhouses and butchers, dry goods stores and many other trades. No government should control the people the people should control the government. Send large stockholders of corporations to prison and the politicians that was supported by these domestic and foreign corporations!
What corn head do you use ? Any special rolls to manage residue?
We have worked with several different corn heads on this project. One thing we are finding is its best for soil health and for grazing to leave as much as possible. Many with chopping corn heads have been shutting off the choppers. None of the heads have really brought issues though, But for no-till you'll not want to leave the thick mat that the chopping heads leave. Distribution is actually the bigger issue. We need to make sure to get even distribution throughout the field or we will experience rows of carbon to nitrogen issues.
@@covercropkings539 good to know. We are looking at the shred select rolls to size up stalk. I tend to run the head as high as possible to leave a good portion of the stalk standing. Was just curious if you had a preferred corn head

Sounds like a great problem to have.. 150 stocker calves per ace each day gaining 3-4 pounds a day until you cover your whole field them sell them.. problems are just excuses for us to not have to change what we are currently doing because we are scared of change.
Broken B Farms that would be great if you have 150 head some of us are row crop farmers and don’t have 1 head
