In my opinion, Future Gohan wasn't able to get much stronger when he was alive because he didn't had a mentor, nobody to help him to train. This is why in heaven, with all of those mentors and masters of fighting, he was able to get MUCH stronger, he just needed more guidance
He did tho, for a short amount of time when he was a kid, until then piccolo and the z fighters were killed by android 17, and 18. So now he depends on himself to defend the earth from android 18 and 17
The biggest thing in Dragonball is actually understanding their limits, if theres nobody stronger than the characters then the growth is far slower. But as soon as the characters understand whats possible they improve extremely fast. Unforchunatly, Gohan never had the option, or training partner to understand where he could be, even with his more warrior like personality in the future. Instead he was shown only his limit, by watching another Super Saiyan (Vegeta) Die. This entire concept is actually written about when Akira talks, and explains what "Ki" Is, he explains it as. " 1. "Yūki (勇気; lit" English: Courage and Body 2. "Shōki (正気; lit" English: Mind and Will 3. "Genki (元気; lit" English: Spirit, life energy. All 3 of these energies combine to become "Ki" As we know it. However, you can train them seperately, and increase your ki as such. When they train physically, their "Yuki" Component of Ki, increases. As their body and courage grows. When you see Piccolo train by meditaiton, his "Shoki" Is being trained, which is his mind and will. Training both has a larger increase,. And spirt, the bodies latent life giving energy is whats slowly eaten away, as the main source. Genki is exponential in its power. Its why abiltiies that draw upon MOSTLY or PURELY Genki, instead of whats typically stronger and less straining (Mixing all 3 to your best to make Ki), these abilties that mostly draw on Genki can actually kill you. Such as the Final Explosion from vegeta, or the Neo-Tribeam from Tienshinhan (That used vs Cell) It sucks his life force away directly, but the trade off is insane power. Or of course, the Genkidama (Spirit bomb) Or vegitos "Genki" Blade, the spirit blade. Here's the most important part though. If you lose hope in yhourself, lose confidence in yourself, your "Courage" will be reduced, and your mind and will weakened. Both of these being weakened by not believing in yourself, and having a strong mind will actually reduce your power. A really popular example is when Gohan gets hit by Super Perfect Cell's blast, to protect Vegeta. Gohan's self assurance, his courage is gone. His mind and Will are broken,. all that remains is his spirit. And his power was cut in half because of it. However, once Goku talked him out of his depressive mind state, slowly Gohan gained more and more power. Up until the final push, when given the chance, his Mind, Will and SPirit where fully unleashed. Whats impoortant is when a character takes damage, thats their Body "Yuki" And as they take the hits, their ki will naturally reduce as their physical health does. Its why characters who get wounded despite expending almost no energy do lose energy in the process, again such as Gohan losing 50% from his arm being broken by Cell, however it was more like 20% , and he was too depressive.
I feel like people really overlook how one sided Gohan vs Cell here was Not only was he way weaker, but as mentioned by Mondo, he never pushed himself against strong fighters either. In the original story, Cell fought several Z Fighters and androids, some of which were stronger than him (Piccolo, Android 16, Vegeta etc) And most importantly, a lot of those fights taught him to utilize his abilities (such as learning to regenerate from Piccolo) So not only did this Future Cell not know how to utilize his abilities better, but he lacks experience in fighting equal or stronger opponents. Seriously, imo if Cell never had the struggles he did in the original story and somehow got the Androids without problem, he'd probably lose way faster.
Not to mention he’s way weaker than the present timeline cell. Not only were the androids stronger in the present timeline than the future one. But also cell probably didn’t absorb as many people due to the androids killing everyone. He probably wasn’t even strong enough to fight the androids like he did in the present timeline and most likely got 18 by surprise ambushing or a solar flair. So he lacked how to utilize his skills and ability’s, lacked experience, and lacked the power. This cell was garroted to lose to Gohan.
When I read this comic from another media,there is a power level of each one of this characters after tge fight is over,is sated that this cell is as strong as the one in the cell games before he self destruct,so he only lacked experience,not strength

Fun fact, that was Toriyama's original plan, to make Gohan become the main protagonist in the series in Goku's place. Sadly, Gohan wasn't as popular amongst fans at the time, so Toriyama brought Goku back instead.

Seeing Future Gohan back to life you can't help but to have tears thank you for goving us this story. Even though Vegeta comes off as an asshole here I do like the bonding that Gohan and Vegeta has. Them sitting together and communicating in a way, Vegeta and Gohan are like brothers. And Gohan's theme when battling Janemba 🔥🔥🔥

1:04:47 just add one extra zero to all their Power Levels and it's all good because canonically Vegeta's Power Level in Frieza Saga was greater than Frieza's Second form and Piccolo's Frieza Saga Power Level and also rivalled Frieza's Third form. So yeah Tien with Kaioken x20 with a Power Level of 180,000,000(when you add the extra zero) would swat and defeat Frieza easily. Same goes for Krillin and Yamcha. Vegeta and Chiaotzu are the only ones who would face difficulties against Mecha-Frieza.
I'd swear Porunga required Namekian native language to grant wishes, even if he's been upgraded, I'd imagine they would leave that as a safeguard against evil people

43:45 the following scene hits hard to me. I lost my mother back in May and we were super close. Seeing Gohan's excitement in this scene about going to see his mom hits way harder after loosing mine. Though it's fictional fiction, seeing Gohan get to see his Mom after being wished back gives me a piece of closure I needed for my mom's passing. And the cool thing is... My mom would entirely understand why 🥲
