      Quote above is actually pointing out next very important issue - there's pretty many people stating that they preserv, admire, worship (whatever) culture actually doing nothing. I'm not judgeing, just saying that if one likes few "viking" movies and have key ring with little "Thors hammare" it does not mean that he tries to keep alive viking culture. Kind of, what we call them in my homeland, "academic fuckers" - they talk much, seems like they even know much about it but actually they never try:) Slava!

    I’m an African American female who really loves learning about history and different cultures and it sickens me how people attack European culture and history. Yes, there were bad moments but Europeans aren’t the only ones to do bad things. Every group of people should be proud of their heritage and every group of people shouldn’t be forced to apologize for something that their ancestors did. Nice work, Peace.

    When I was in the Canadian Army, I had a couple of opportunities working with our NATO allies. I found that the Norwegian Soldiers were quite proud of their Viking heritage. They were top notch soldiers, and I would gladly stand beside them any day. Every culture has had evil things done to them, and had perpetrated evil upon others so none of us are innocent. What we need to do is learn from it and move on. Cancelling it will lead to forgetting it, and a people who do not know where they came from are lost.

      @Alt Voices Portal One of the best examples I've seen of this happened in Finland around 1000AD. Finland had, or has, a rich cultural history that dates back to the end of the ice age, or over 10k years... but good luck finding it after an attempt at genocide occurred around 900 to 1100AD, destroying records of history, disbanding their way of government, destroying their written word, and even some forms of architecture, but ultimately forcing their society fall under Vatican rule. Never heard of this before? I wonder why? Robert Sephur is an anthropologist who has done extensive research on the forced amnesia of many cultures, and his channel is worth listening to also. I know we sometimes disregard oral history over written text, but sometimes that's the only way to preserve it. I hope Bjorn keeps the channel going, he has my support, and my encouragement to keep the faith... we are listening.

Our culture, beliefs and choices work with nature which ultimately cannot be tested by the new way of thinking you can discredit or disprove anything you dont like. I am native indigenous from Alaska, my ancestors were semi-nomadic hunter/gatherers, and we were (and still are) people of the land. I love how you said at the beginning of the video that we belong to the land. You've spoken in your video of how your culture is being taken from you, we've seen it happen to us as well. We speak mainly English and we have faith brought from "white man" (I was raised by faith of the church and raised a part of the land as well). I feel saddened to see a lot of my people lose their connection to the land. When I tell stories of myself going off to walk on my own that gives rise to a spook feeling in others and I just tell them "you don't need to be afraid of the country, of the land. Just believe that you are a part of it, that you have a right to be there just like the animals do (and have respect for the land of course), you've nothing to fear". I love going off to walk in the wilderness on my own as well. Cheers, brother from another land and another ethnicity. Your land looks like it would be enchanting to walk amongst.

      And honestly, can we all not acknowledge that pillaging, raiding, war, etc were bad things and are good to be left in the past and at the same time appreciate what is the culture in itself ( the myths, the festivities, the symbols, the clothes,the food, art, etc)? People tend to mix bad things that were done in the past with actual culture, like, murder was never cultural you can still do the rituals that included a sacrifice changing the sacrifice for something symbolic, a change that was already done centuries ago because at some point they realized killing healthy people in rituals was not very productive and was bad.

      I wouldnt say they were the BEST. Other cultures before or after the Norse were incredible raiders/military tacticians. However this isnt to discredit vikingrs in any way. They were largely a rural society but their warriors' way of life and cunning drove them to successfully invade new lands. They did however have the luck of attacking during the dark ages, where their adversaries were weakened from civil war, intellectual decline, and illness. I have a newfound respect and love for Norse/vikingr culture but we have to acknowledge that the heathen army wouldve never made the ground they did in England if the romans had never left. If they had landed in a unified England(suppose England never fell apart during the dark ages), I doubt they wouldve gained anything but a homefront invasion and a Christian king.

    First of all, you don´t need to appologies for beeing a Norse. Me, I was a member of the german navy and we often sailed to northern shores. When ever we sailed into one of your fjords, may it be in Sweden or Norway. For me it was kind of comming home. It´s like the lands welcome a lost son. ( I can´t really explain that feeling. But it touches me deeply. Even now, when I see pictures or videos from this great landscapes it brings me to tears. Makes me kind of homesick.) These vikings, the Norse culture, had done a deep impact on Europe for hundreds of years. If your rejecting this facts you just reject your ancestry. They founded many cities, like Dublin f.e. settled around the world, they build more then they destroyed. Driven by honour, bravery and worship of their Gods. So this "vikings" and me got some things in common. We both were sailors and warriors ;-) (Me I´m a Larper now, sounds crazy. But it´s the only way allowed to become what I really am, just a Norseman.) So stay safe and healthy and be proud of what you are.

      @@niallebhann3631 I understand. My thinking is that 14th century was different from 11th too... so when we're talking about traditional culture it's the stuff that continues on through the generations in spite of the centuries giving way to more centuries. This is also why I think the 13th Century sagas are perfectly legitimate records of Viking culture, since the people _were still vikings_! :) Some people don't trust the 13th Century sagas, but I think they are going too far. For example, the 20th Century English author Tolkien I think did a pretty good job of writing his sagas in the Old Anglo-Saxon tradition. It's not "the same" but it's definitely within the tradition, and does a good job of presenting it for a modern audience.
      I'll add that Bjorn too is a perfectly legitimate representative of Viking culture for the modern age. He speaks the same language as the Vikings (it has changed but it is still fundamentally the same language), he lives in the same land and the same country (Norway) as his Viking ancestors. Basically, I think he's a perfectly legitimate representative of the tradition and I can't wait until his books are translated into English or French so I can read them!

Hostility is directed especially to any tradition that places importance on individual initiative and resourcefulness, as people who embrace such traditions are walking examples to others that the state is NOT necessary as a source of guidance.

      Sooo true. Wellsaid. Despite the fact that, yes, every global culture, or select members thereof, participated in some truly “barbaric/hideous acts”, we must seek to understand their actual contributions and remember to judge “barbarity’s” in the realistic context of what was “standard practice” of that time and place. We cannot childish-simply take the conditions from “isolated prosperity bubbles of modernity” and “simply transpose them by force” on preceding ages and places in our rabidly critical wackjob imaginations. “Sorry!!!”.

      Eich = Mittelhochdeutsch
      Eiche = Hochdeutsch today
      Aig, or Aik = Indogermanic
      Eik = Norwegian today

      The Question is why was the Oak holy?
      Before the Iceage (Fimbul Winters) we had in Northern- and Central Europe tropical Climate, so the Nature provided us with fruits the entire year, we was entirely fruitarians.
      After a huge Cataclysm for Ex a Pole Shift brought everything upside down and created the Icetime less fruits and winters came, so without the Acorn, Oaknut, Eichel we could not survive.
      Anyway as it got year by year colder we had to leave Northern- and Central Europe heading East and Southeast.

But what saddens me the most is that my parents never had any traditions to pass down and now as the mother of two boys with Scandinavian/viking heritage, it makes me so sad I have nothing to pass down to them about it. Every time i try to dig more into it or express how proud I am of my heritage, people always try and make me feel bad or just say to forget it. But I can’t. Hi, this is strange... I've had the same thought for years "You belong to this land" although I'm mostly Scots but was not brought up on the Scots patch but I know it's in my DNA. My Dad's father had reddish colour hair. Same thing, people, mountains and trees are the pull I think. Scots people are definitely different to the English in the south. I think there is something to it and these hidden "elites" know that and try to sever it, like you said Mr H. For decades, in my mind's eye looked over the water towards Scandinavia for some reason but never knew why. These "elites" behind it are envious, I agree and they always go after folk who are close to their ancestral lands still. Look at the Native Americans. Some Scots were moved as well about 150 years ago, in the land clearance so the rich could get richer. All for a quick cash in.
    I despise them all, all they have done is try to remove us from ourselves, bit by bit. They use that old tactic of saying we are migrants and not the original people. They are sharks. I appreciate the Norse folk and culture, they added their own to other lands as well, like Scotland and east Anglia in England. We have an east coast county called Norfolk (Nor-folk). Lots of towns and villages on the east coast with names that end with "ick" or "wich" like Harwich, Norwich, Walberswick. There's the Jorvik Viking museum in York as well. Look at Iceland. Tough, hardy folk.

    I just don't get it man. People mix race with culture, they believe that because you are white you have no culture. That somehow being white means that you share the same bloodline, same beliefs, same culture as other white people. By that same logic could I say that all Black people are of the same culture? That someone from South Africa is exactly like someone from Michigan. Or that a Korean person is the exact same as a Japanese person? They aren't alike, they are very much different and distinct from one another and to even say they are the same would be a disservice to their entire culture. The Norse culture has always interested me, and while I don't know my exact lineage or what I consist of culturally I still very much love the Norse Culture. Anyone who tries to rewrite history, discredit a culture or just try to obliterate it is evil. To deny our roots, our heritage, our forefathers is to spit in their face. Period.

      @@VentureHolly What do you mean their race is their culture? That's prejudice at best and racist at worst. That's what my whole argument was dismantling. Race DOES NOT equal culture. Culture is the beliefs and actions of a large social group or just a group of people in general. That doesn't limit it to only someone of a certain race, you don't have to be white to be Swedish, German or Norwegian. Would you tell a black person born and raised in Sweden that culturally he is the same as someone from South Africa? If race did equal culture then all Asians would be the same, all white people would be the same and all black people would be the same. It may be true that people can have similar roots, that does not mean they are similar in any other way. Libyans are not the same as Angolans and Nigerians are not the same as Zambians. Again, to say otherwise is a disservice to everything they believe in.

      35 years ago when I started my genealogy research I referred to myself as Native American Indian, Irish and German. Not necessarily % in that order. Now I've learned I am SOOOOOOOO much more. Native American Indian became Choctaw, Seminole and possibly Nansemond. Irish became Scottish, Irish, English, French... and German became German, Dutch, Polish/Russian... This is where I started realizing I'm a HUMAN, I'm a Mutt, a Heinz 57, a MIX. Hell now I refer to myself as SE Native American and Northern European. I'm not naive enough to think that my ancestry originated in the 1500's, the earliest person I have ID'd as an ancestor. That is just a start. I DON'T know where they migrated too and from over the years hence some speculation on Nansemond, Polish, Russian...etc. Place reference is all I have in some aspects but what society held that land at that moment of time I'm not certain.
      Looking at me genetically, I'm one of the largest members in my family at 6' 260#. Dad was 5'9" 240, barrel chested and his dad slightly smaller, caucasian by the way. All clear indicators of the Northern region of Europe. Mom's dad was red faced, south eastern USA and struggled to grow a hair on his face. ANYONE can see he is CLEARLY Native American.
      My point is each of us are a genealogical cocktail that is solely unique to ourselves. Even our own siblings have a variation that is dominant. Only possibility would be the result of a 3rd + generation of a twin twin parent. Closest I have is my grandmothers double first cousin. Sisters married brothers thus as close to siblings without being siblings that you can biologically get.
      Accept your uniqueness, your history, your heritage. Without ANY one member you would cease to exist and have NOTHING to grow off of!
