    One small detail I really like is that when they sing "I can't stand losin' " multiple times during the chorus, it emphazises that he cares more about the concept of him losing than the actual person he's lost.

    Early on, The Police had that Punk and Reggae mix, it's their best stuff, even though their later stuff was great, their earlier music was more powerful and better, especially that punk sound.

    • @toomuchinformation

      I loved the energy around it. As Sting began to assert himself and punk music fizzled out, that energy was lost. A lot of it came from Stewart Copeland as well.
      That's why I can't get into Sting's solo work; it just sounds so anodyne to me. I can hear the artistry, but it leaves me cold.

      Such a clever lyric...

    • @PlutoDarknight
      @PlutoDarknight 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@costanzo6770 It's an interesting song in structure. The lyrics leave little open to interpretation, he loves the girl he's singing about but the girl dumped him. He tried to call her, he sent her letters and his favourite LPs as a chance to get her back but she's not answering the calls, she returned the letters to sender but also sent the LPs back but all scratched so he can't enjoy them himself anymore. He doesn't dare approach her because his brother (being 6'10 as an exaggeration to say he's big and buff) would just snap his skull in two. In the end he considers suicide his only option, both because he doesn't want to continue on without her anymore, but also to leave a mark on her, showing that it was her fault that drove him to end his life.
      The woman he loves is a spiteful bitch who throws him away while he's a prideful, somewhat arrogant asshole who goes as far as ending his own life to ruin hers since he can't have what he wants, what he believes should be his. Note how the chorus also constantly repeats "I can't stand losing" moreso than specifically "I can't stand losing *you*".

    I guess it's the most obvious thing ever, but I love how the chorus says "I can't stand losing" like he literally can't take a no for an answer or he is just a sore loser, but then adds the "you" to pretend like it's a "romantic" thing or he is talking about he doesn't want to be without her.
    Then the last verse makes more sense, he is threatening to kill himself not only because of a heartbreak, but as his last resort to "win" because he literally "Can't stand losing".

      Especially prevalent in the drumming - listen out for the hi-hat and rimshots during instrumental parts of their songs, especially this one.
      Some of the drumming is very reminiscent of Everett Morton, Jamaican born drummer for The (English) Beat, a Two-Tone ska band, who's first single (Tears Of A Clown/Ranking Full Stop) was released in 1979.
      Listen to their debut 1980 album "Just Can't Stop It" - mainly "Mirror In The Bathroom" to hear Morton's drums in full effect.

    They are all great in this band.. but damn Copeland's drumming is really something out of this world... it's not often that you hear such creative grooves on really big hits. Everytime I listen to the Police I think how Copeland is amazing.
