A Train Derailment (Day 2), Rerailing All The Cars & A Trespasser Too!

- Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad ELS 502 came up from Green Bay, WI to help out as I catch a trespasser and didn't know it until he walked right up to the crew, out came the F-Bombs telling him to leave.. It was an interesting battle as they worked to get all the trucks back onto the tracks. As they'd get one railcar back on, another would come off the tracks. In the end, the train was removed, and work could begin to repair this damage railroad track near the Iron Mountain, MI cemetery.

I think the FRA needs to come and inspect them tracks
They won't care as much because they are probably a class 3 or smaller. They know they don't take care of things.
I think you need a real job.
You need to stop with Matt. That guy has some sort of mental problem. Ignore him.
At this point EVERY time I see Matt my camera will be running, in case he wants to make something up.. I'm not changing my ways because of the way HE feels.
3:27 '65 Camino...with
a '67 Vette behind it...!!!
Looks good from here...
502 is due for some cylinder packs, or a rebuilt turbo.
You have a great channel. Just subscribed. Keep up your great work!
Hi Jason, love your vids. I don't understand how this railroad can operate on such bad rails and ties. Do they ever invest anything in the tracks before they run on ground? Keep 'em comin' Jason.
Probably the cost of renting the locomotives and fuel. They can get good used ribbon rail from other railroads, anything is better than this.
good train derailment video
CCRX 6700 That’s Railroading being a shorter UN-connected rail line would show you how to run a short line railroad!!!😂 😂😂 But rerailing cars on the cheep is a good show.
I would say that this line needs to be re-stoned, recribed and retied completely in order to get this RR into shape.
Don't they have any walkie-talkies to communicate with the engineer instead of yelling?
Most likely one MOW guy has a radio, or the conductor's out with them, and the guys are yelling to that person, not to the engineer.
Matt seems like a big whimp. Cry baby if you ask me, he can't even face you to talk man to man.
Be cool if you Film your VIDEOS with a Flying Drone 😊😊From a SPONSERS 😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Horh Tech? Is that a typo? Should it be Horn Tech?
They want to hire Dave from ccrx 6700 to replace the bad tyes (sleepers inthe UK), ballast and do some tamping for them, this might remove the wibbly wobbly rail road.
Dave sure does know a thing or two! I love his videos!
Jason, Love when you are able to show some of the behind the scenes of railroading. Thank You.
Must be wonderful for the guy that yells a lot thinking you are in charge and most likely you are part of the problem. sometimes it may be easier to uncouple, drag the cars ahead for 100 ft, just rebuild the mess in between and go back and get another 100 ft cleaned up. Use the old ties to build a camp fire and fix hot dogs. Probably cheaper too. :)
Hats off to those guys working there ass off getting the train back on the track. If I was there, in Michigan I would buy them all a beer. It's kind of sad that they do not have the equipment like the big rail companies do, to make they jobs a lot easier and faster to get done. Nice job filming Jason.
If they keep having de-railments LP in Segola may cancel their agreements and start trucking their product out, thanks Jason, looking forward to your next video
Nice footage Jason, very interesting, however, it must be very frustrating having people watching their every move and posting on youtube. I know I wouldn't like someone filming me while doing my job. Good job by the railroad employees getting the cars back on the track.
Frustrating when you get a set of wheels back on the rail and another set jumps off . Sure makes for a long day or night . Great video makes me remember why I'm retired .
I read a perspective of the RR last year and the railroad should have positive expansion future. I am just surprised as to how poor the infrastructure is.
With what they're hauling, plus car storage fees, either E&LS isn't making a lot of money, or the company can't be bothered to improve things. And if E&LS is operating on a shoestring budget, could they qualify for state funding to fix the track?
Jason, they should just abandon the E&LS, it makes Penn Central look good!
Awesome video sir. Im a railroad kid myself. My dad worked for Conrail until the merger and then CSX for a total of 36 years. He was a track foreman.
Many times back in the day at IRM we had to get out the bread loaf or wye plate to put cars back on that wouldn't play nice. Funny how better track condition makes that happen less. Spread rails means not enough good ties to hold the track in guage. Cool on site coverage, liked it much. Thanks Jason!
Seems like Matt is pulling that shit trying to provoke you. Dude had some serious problems. Does he do that to anybody else? If not it could be harassment, and you have it all documented.
They are cursing a blue streak !😂
Thank you for bring us the rest of the story, Jason! I'm always curious about this side of the railway. It's especially interesting to see how a shortline handles a situation like this, not having a lot of options to re-route their trains or a lot of big equipment to fix a situation like this quickly.
👍👍interesting video Jason! Always wondered what they did for a derailment, now I know. Certainly Friday the 13th for ELS. 🚂🚂
I’m very interested in the train horn . Friend just installed it on his truck and loves it
You need to get a drone so you can show this stuff better.
Interesting video Jason! Takes me back 20 odd years to see rerailing going on. I had plenty of rerailing jobs with the breakdown crew. Lots of crawling around under trains putting tiebars on to hold the gauge while we used the ramps to rerailing them. Strange how it's usually raining or snowing when you get the call out! Never seemed to happen on nice sunny summer days! Glad I'm retired and don't have those jobs anymore but have to admit that I enjoyed every minute of it and would do the same again If I had my time over again.
As soon as I saw them go over the rail grabber and back on to the ground again, I couldn't help but laugh a bit. Years of working derailments has taught me three things. 1) always uncouple and shore up the stock rail ahead of the PD even if just with gauge rods 2) never rerail against the PD when derailment is on a shove move 3) if the trucks have crossed over, you better call a crane because I have seen many a foolish man work hours trying against the laws of physics to no avail
At least it's free hope it's not a cheap one and rust away
Hey there Jason.
It has been a while since I watched your channel and am glad I am back. Always enjoy your refreshing and direct narrative. No namby pamby stuff.
Keep up your good works!
Good ol Matty he can't even bare to look at you Jason 😂 By the way good video getting the trian back on track no pun intended then you see a trespasser😂 those rail ties getting replaced is needed
Absolutly along with replacing the stick track.
Thanks for taking thehe time to show us this process. Fascinating.
popular place for a derail, eh? Only found this channel yesterday, watched about 3 videos and this is #2 in that spot.
At what point does it become less expensive to fix the problem rather than having the crews out there all day? 20 derails?
These guys are thinking, at least it’s not January
17:04 that is a rerailer.
hi tommie here! boy they really had a problem with that train wheels kept falling off they get them on they fall off again but their up and running good video
Good live action Jason!
Wow, is Matt Camera Shy, His hand covering the side of his face? Jason go back on this video to 2: 38 Mark, hhhuuuummmmm...... Is Matt flipping you the Flying Bird, lol?
This is the result of a lack of roadbed, rail, and railroad tie maintenance.
I've been a fan of your channel for a few years and being from the great lakes (Ontario) I like watching trains and comparing our weather ect... anyway, Im not sure that railroads financial situation, probably not good however with that said, they definitely need to spend some money on there infrastructure. I'm always amazed that those trains can stay on the tracks... Rock n Roll railway... 😂✌️
Penn Central 2.0 we work out our engines until they die ELS lol and the equipment as well 😁
This is clearly a case of these rails will never be replaced with new one's ever at $40 ,000 astick that's not installed figure it out......
I thought the retailer were used in pairs not one side. No wonder they have such a hard time?
Boy do they need a bunch of roadbed work done... The places where cars wobble show that support there really needs tamping. Rotted ties allowing the track to try to be "wide gauge" is a huge problem...If they don't have a track gang, they need to rent one. (Sort of like what the Cumberland Mine does when they have a 2 week mine closure for vacations..)-- One of the companies is named Amtrac or something like that (NOT the passenger rail folk) who arrive with tampers, tie removal and replacement, spike installation and so on equipment.. and then do a mile or 5 in a fairly short period of time.
This is not a company that cares about maintenance.but speeds are pretty slow and they arent carrying any haz mat so I guess they dont care.
Looks like a job for RJ Corman, lol. Gotta wonder how much $ they lose in revenue by not keeping up with track maintenance. Nice video and nice air horns too!
When I'm glad to see that they're back on the track and rolling back down. 🚂👍
Why bother talking to Matt? It clearly won't chang3 anything. Why does he or his dad even care what you do?
Don't tattle on the old guy with the limp.
He busted himself. lol
Nark
LMFAO.. And? @@Airman_Fu
This is nothing. On the W&LE we had a great re-rail crew that put on 10 loaded hightop gondolas filled with scrap. All still tied together. Man that was a great day eapecially when the Vice President of transportation said it wouldn't be done because the rail rolled in a curve! Love it when the management is made wrong.
This is as exciting as watching paint dry !
This RR doesn't handle much freight. I suspect the owner, whoever they are, has other more profitable lines, and this one gets nothing from the mother company for maintenance. I tried to get our Senator interested, but without the company applying for funds, nothing will happen. So, the saga of ELS will continue. It probably produces little profit, so doesn't get any improvements.
I know it takes money but got dam why don't they lay new track & ties , will definetly save them plenty money and time in the long run
What is their track maintenance program? Do they put any ties in the track besides after derailments?
They don't care about track maintenance they don't care to spend money on it.
Excellent video. Been a fan for several years. Stay awesome. It's too bad Matt still won't talk, but at liest he didn't run away from ya
I may not know much...but get them Mega Haulers back on!!!
Hey Jason, this is an awesome video. I don’t know if you realize what you have here, but this could be your viral of the year. Do you realize that none of the other TH-cam videographers or Facebook for that matter do not have anything like this? This is a technique video on how to re-rail cars in the smart economical way. Most major shortlines would spend thousands of dollars hiring a third-party to come out and do this. You have an instructional video here you might want to edit it by ending and showing what a come along is and what a frog is and how they work. This was a fantastic video. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
I bet Jawtooth would agree…
In a high velocity lane, that may be vital. Here not as much.
Every shortline knows what butterfly frogs are. There are times you can use them and times you can't. In this situation, with the wheels close to the rail, and able to climb the frogs, you can use them. Other times, you can't. If the wheels are too far away from the rail, or if the rail's rolled, you can't rerail in this fashion. Also, these guys are completely incompetent. I never saw a single tape measure out to check gauge. The wheels keep falling off because the gauge is wide and they just need to pull in in further and they wouldn't have this problem.
They arent really that hard to rerail.... They use what they call "Burllingtons" . And the reason why they come on and off is because of Wide Gauge. . They should cut the Train right before the wide guage and put some Gauge rods in there to bring it together to the right gauge. Also when they are bringing the track together that Car that says defect card does have a Bad Order card in there. should go to the next fix point.
The FRA says that gauge bars are no substitute for good ties.
I understand ... but it would got them on the road quicker....then once the cars are clear replace ties or rail. if ya notice that Hi-Railer had a piece of rail on it.@@erie910
Looks like Matt was enjoying a cigarette when he drove by. Nice.
Like I said the ties are so bad the rails are spreading apart the track is in desperate need of repair they make temporary bars to hold the track spacing. Fun to watch great video thanks Jason
I have seen those WC Mega Log Hauler cars in Fort Frances, Ontario quite a few times.
I see those cars are actually called "MegaLogHauler". Painted right on them.
@ 30:50 I never question what you do, you see more than us, I'm in Charlevoix at the moment , but I got to tell ya. no I don't. sorry I'm old .
Nah- just those pesky MEGA-LOG Haulers actin' up again!
People dont understand how tight of a budget these small railroads run on. Im sure they would LOVE to have new tracks, but the truth is, repairing all those tracks would bankrupt the company. Big railroads must run 100 cars every mile, just to break even!
Not surprised there’s a derailment on that railway those tracks are horrible, to be honest
Over the years of watching your channel I am really surprised at how hostel people are in that area I hope it's just a few on that railroad which I still don't understand but I have never seen actions like these guys pull all the time
And a happy 14th! Eclipse day!
What a good video, couldn't take my eyes off of it
Hey Jason !! They are running this RR like the ""OL"" FRAM commercials """ Pay me now or pay me later "" as would make sense to do the track maintenance B/4 a derailment & they should be glad those were mty cars !!
Their slogan was, "Pay a little now, or pay a lot later". Yep, you are right.
That track needs some serious rehabilitation to it
Can’t wait to see when you install the horn zone
Hope it´s not steel rerailers. They weight a ton !!
Just joking here. Hey, Jason, when your wife passes before train, somethings wrong here. Should review ypur priority.... no in reality
it´s good to see a couple taking care of each other ❤
Thanks for the show.
Mega Log Hauler! How is your life bud?
At around the 20:00 mark, I concluded - such is the self-evident lack of upkeep/maintenance of the track, that this is a rail operator which in knowing "...the price of everything..." must surely learn a lesson that this doesn't imply least cost. -- A very interesting and informative video, by the way, Jason, thank you for posting!
Just a matter of time until ELS track maintenance draws a big OSHA fine, cause FRA and NTSB won't do anything.
Meh, probably excepted track. No regulations. It can be as bad as you want.
Anyone think the tracks are the problem?
What a joke for every one they rerail another one derails.
Great job
Matt's driving the same model car as I do.
Even the color and wheels are identical! Lol
Don't hold that against me.😂
I dont understand why they dont use a derailer to put wheels back on track all they have to do is reverse the derailer
Isn’t that what the frog is for?
Cool can't wait to hear a 14L on TH-cam. Lots of track repair!
Keep up the fine reporting, Jason! You'd think/presume that the RR's insurance rep just scratches his/her head. The cost of labor, materials, and time-to-client must be amazing. The cost for an undercutter, tamper etc. must be less than the accumulated cost to work on each derailment. The RR's cost accountant must be having nightmares!
They don't need an undercutter, they need new rail ( preferable ribbon rail) and a good tamper with ballast.
Methinks the soft spots are full of soil and a mere tamping with new ballast is more of a bandaid than a fix. It appears that in the wet the soil pumps something terrible. There are most certainly areas that are ok, but the line near Jason's driveway where the cars rock to and fro even at the slowest of speeds (derailments in the snow episode)...that whole line needs rework/ties/welded (110 Lb. at a minimum) by Hulcher, Gorman, or Herzog......the insurance must be ghastly. Wonder what the profit margin is for the RR? I'd not want to be an FRA official riding in the cab of a loco on this Class III RR without Dramamine or a sick bag.... The ROW is full of debris, as well...not my idea of a good public image or safety, but maybe it's a Black Friday every day for the employees? I think a Sperry Geometry Car's electronics would overheat in one mile.🤣🤣🤣🤣 @@kerryrock9248
@@paulkalff6408 I completely agree. I worked for a railroad that it was 10 and 20 mph restrictions for miles. The first time I went down these rails I swore the crew needed helmets because of the rocking. They eventually purchased used ribbon rail from Amtrak and started working on things. Maybe the owner needs to start getting Govt. assistance and grants. That's what our owner did. They all lie to get free money.
Good points on the ability of staff to maintain welded sticks.... Should have typed Corman, not Gorman. Next week I'm heading to Long Beach and thought I'd cut over at Gorman on Tejon Pass...back out to my old haunt as a squid at China Lake...The folks at Uncle Pete here in Fremont, CA just leave crap all over the place...pick up the old rail? Nahhhh. You made it out of the RR biz ok! Grew up 1/4 mile from the Sac Northern in Lafayette, CA...great granddad was roundhouse super at Port Costa in the late 1800's..love those choo choos...now off to Venice, FL, and G Scale..such fun! Andale!@@kerryrock9248
@@kerryrock9248No, they need ties. These cars are derailing due to wide gauge. You can run 10 MPH on any rail if the gauge is good.
👍#49🇺🇲🤳🚂🚂🏃💨❤️
No Freddie!
Good vdeo
Seems Track Maintenance would be a cost effective effort…More Revenue lost with Derailments and Damaged Cargo…Think a Weekly/Monthly Hi-Rail Crew could keep up with Repairs…
A little Ballast goes a long way
New car? I don't recall you ever driving a yellow one! Pretty scary if you freeze the video @0:40!. I don't see a truck in your fleet for that Air horn! 😁😁
Those tracks are older than the town, I bet. 😁❤️🇺🇸
Some of them railroad guys are grumps.
They don't like rerailing a train
The consequences of non-existent track maintenance . . .
I think that's Larry, Moe, and Curly trying to rerail those cars...
So Jason, how does this make within the last month 4 or 5 derailments for them?
R these workers from the railroad or are they hired by the railroad?
From your previous videos this year I formed the opinion that ELS neede to spens a lot of dollars on track renewal - possibly with cwr, so that track speeds could be raised somewhat, to everyone's benefit! Maybe ELS stands for Easy, Loose and Slow!!
This video has everything! Trespassing, busted rails, another guy calling the cops, spooky cemetery.......now all we need is panhandlers.
Getting close to Halloween, too
Talk about being held together with chewing gum and baling wire. Certainly there has to be federal dollars out there for track improvements. Seeing their track structure it amazes me the ELS doesn’t have more derailments then they do.
