My best friend in my 20s went to see them without me, then told me about it later because he was getting back at me for having a girlfriend. I still think he got the better end of that one. Anyway, he just invited himself backstage and spoke to Mark Burgess. He asked why he changed the lyrics of Second Skin on the (name escapes me) live album. Did the girl who inspired it betray you? Burgess just laughed and made a dismissive gesture, which was all the confirmation he needed. And if I'd just repressed my hormones for a few months, I might've seen this with my own eyes.

I came of age early, and yet also late. I decided which bands I loved in the 80s when I was a kid, but I couldn't buy their music till I was a teen in the 90s. So my music collection was 10 years behind. I turned an ambilivalent eye away from grunge and lovingly towards postpunk, which was absolutely the right call, then and now. I didn't discover these guys until around 2001 or so. But I would've loved them when Script of the Bridge came out. Yes, I was 4, but I was very discerning then and I knew what I liked. One of my most prized records today is the 2 LP version of Script, and you can have it when you pry from my cold, dead hand! 😆

love hearing them in rehearsal getting pissed off at each other and themselves. not to be mean but it sounds like a typical rehearsal moment. favorite band of that Post Punk/Gothic whatever genre. Met Mark a few times in Cali. really decent person. he even takes selfies with people. They really should have got a better shot at the US Market. Sorry about their Manager dying. like Joy Division but it was their manager instead (thankfully) the front man. not that I am glad their manager Tony passed away. wish things didn't fall apart. Hope to see you in Nor Cal again, Mark when hopefully thing get back to normal after Covee 2

Back in the mid 1980's through to 1992, Tower records here in the United States had a free magazine named "Tower Pulse" and near the front page were the "Desert Island Discs", where the general public would send in their votes by paper mail for which ten official recordings one would chose if stranded on an island for the rest of their lives. One blessed soul stated that "If you like Simple Minds & U2, you'll love The Chameleons!" I had not heard of them and this person listed their album "Script of the Bridge" as one of the top Desert Island Discs for them. This is in the time of no internet, so I took a chance and bought an English import CD of Script of the Bridge and I cannot explain what a revelation it was to listen to that album the first couple times......wow. They performed live at the Moore Theater here in Seattle within a year, and went to the concert and before the show, conversing with a guy next to me, told him I have Script of the Bridge on CD and he leaned over and told his friend that I have that album on CD and they were taken aback with raised eyebrows,. By the way, our local band Pure Joy opened, quite good and The Chameleons were so very good.

But that's the thing with his vocal style, it's 'standingonthetipofyertoesfordearlife' way of delivery. Contrast him with say Steve Kilbey of the church, both bands are very similar with dual lead guitarist, totally unique drummers and singing bassist. Only difference is Kilbey sings with a cool detached Bowie vibe & Burgess is singing for dear life from the depths of his soul. Both are great..
