For the nerds: Part of what determines the spark plug gap is the cylinder pressure at ignition. When air is compressed it becomes more resistant to current flow. The cylinder pressures can vary widely between different engine designs, so that's why you need to check what the engine maker set it to instead of relying on the pre-gap distance set by the maker of the plug.

Maurice Searcy made a good note about spark plug gap on my last video, so I decided to make a video about spark plug gapping. I'd love to hear your comments on whether or not you gap your spark plugs before installing them into your engine, and can you really tell the difference? Please share your thoughts in the comments below :)

yes, gap is essential for firing consistency.
Simply make sure you dont apply any pressure to the center electrode pin... only torque the ground electrode alone.
(FYI: I found the spark to more consistent with a double platinum plug than with the hair-thin central irridium plug - It seems as if a larger spark surface offers more possible paths to strike ground... as opposition to a single path.)
Long story short: less random misfires! (I do know the high-voltage narrative about easier to ionise a path with a needle tip... crap!)
