I used to think MTV was targeting teens to early-mid 20s. Turns out 12 year olds have been the key demographic going back years. Then I realized I thought MTV was cool when I was like 11-12.

I think the Real World show (along with other 90s “young adult “ shows like friends and Mel rose place) really got the ball rolling for the new urban renewal /“gentrification” movement back then. Shows like this made it cool for people wanting to live an urban lifestyle with multiple roommates in a nice city loft apartment. Soon all the cool shops and restaurants would follow in certain hotspot urban neighborhoods around the country. Interesting to see how the big cities were starting to change during and after the 90s and still to the present day due to the increased demand for an Uber cool urban lifestyle. The alt community such as artists , gays and other creatives (which the real world mostly consisted of) were the initial trailblazers in transforming an urban community then followed by richer yuppy types that move in and make the real estate skyrocket whereas the original artists and working folk can’t live there anymore. I was rolling through my old neighborhood in Chicago and it was amazing how much it changed. Expensive new homes and apartments , high end baby strollers lol, joggers etc. It’s nice though to see new energy and life pumped into these neighborhoods. There’s pros and cons to the whole gentrification thing but overall it’s good to have lively cities again. Although they’ve been trying to stigmatize big cities in the media again even more now… but we keep it moving😎🌆
Unfortunately i haven't come across a single person that wants to live with multiple roommates in a city. Everybody loves their alone space these days... But maybe because I'm from the south
