It's a great album, but Boxer is the one. Slow Show, Brainy, Mistaken for Strangers and Fake Empire were a big leap on from Alligator. High Violet was my introduction, and its excellence made me run out and buy the previous two. Alligator, for me, didn't have the impact of Boxer. Another cracking review.
Thanks! Ha, see, for me it was the opposite: discovering 'Alligator' first, then feeling underwhelmed by 'Boxer'. It still doesn't satisfy me as much, but it quickly grew on me and it's got many of my absolute favourites on it ('Mistaken For Strangers' and 'Ada' in particular). That's a common theme with me and The National: I often need time with their albums before I take to them. But then, that's the case with a lot of my favourite albums. I do enjoy finally falling for an album after it's made you "work for it" 😄.
@@2020Sound It's a fact that the order in which you discover a band's albums plays a part in which becomes your favourite. Have you listened to El Vy, Matt's side project ? Some good stuff there.
I have! Someone bought their album for me a few years ago. Absolutely loved the single 'Return To The Moon'. Really interesting to hear his voice in such a different context. Loving the solo stuff I've heard from him, too.

I like the first half of Boxer, but I mostly find this band very boring.
