An absolutely superb concept, and you managed to design it wonderfully. From expanding the surrounding environment in a campaign, you can make the players feel unrestricted, and able to quickly explore the locations nearby. They can also feel more connected to the city, and the political intrigue ocurring above and beneath the city. So many characters can be utilized, but not in an overwhelming amount, to invigorate the player's social wonder, and learn many of the machinations ocurring in the city of Waterdeep, and the ecosystem/battlefield that ocur deep in Undermountain.
I would even go further and recommend two other books from second edition, and third edition. These are called Volo's Guide to Waterdeep, which is basically the enchiridion, but much bigger, and more of Volo's personality. The third edition book is called "Waterdeep, city of splendors", and it is a true historical document of the city. It gives you information that precedes the city itself, and details its creation. It's map is much more detailed than Dragon Heist, but that is because it is mailnly a lore book, but it still contains mini adventures and magical items. As a fun fact, did you know there is an ancient vampire in the city that lives in another dungeon that isn't Undermountain? There are so many different aspects of the city to explore, the only limits are within your imagination.
Jake, in my mind one should never conform himself/ herself to what they thought about something at a point in their lives. I fully agree with your video, and even encourage other Dungeon Masters running Waterdeep dragon heist to consider the benefits of including Dungeon of the mad mage. Well, that was an enormous tangent. Thank you kindly for the video. It meant a lot.

As a suggestion of future topics that could be fun to discuss, maybe you could talk a little about how you handle the calender/seasons of Waterdeep. Stuff like how weather might effect the party, what to do for some of the different holidays at the back of the book and how the feel and function of the city of Waterdeep changes with the seasons. I feel like it's supposed to be pretty central to the module given how much it nods to it but i don't feel like the book describes it very well.

The book kind of pretends that the season doesn't exist until chapter 4, totally agree with you there. I'll keep the suggestion in mind, thanks!

I recently added N'ghathrod from mad mage to my dragonheist campaign, he's escaped the undermountain and become something of a celebrity

Don't take my words in this video as gospel, but perhaps use them to build your own opinion after reading into some of this stuff and perhaps watching some actual play of the campaign, but glad you'll keep it in mind!

Maybe I am just in the wrong circles, but thank you for doing this this is like the only video I've seen connecting the two and they are definitely supposed to be connected. I'm about to start mad mage (super intimidated) we just finished DH and as I'm reading thru, there's a ton of ways to connect them and since they didn't go up against Xan or Breg they can both tie into multiple levels of under mount. It's pretty cool

I left a longer comment on the Xanathar video, but I'm regretting not incorporating more of Dragon Heist at the start of my DotMM game. Though I've made some broad strokes on my own I think I will take wholesale chunks of DH and attach them to the ends of some of the loose threads. If you get a chance to check out my other comment I have a more specific question there, but a piece of what I was asking is basically this video.

I'm near the end of Dragon Heist and i want to know if confronting Xanathar in this campaing has a big effect on the Mad Mage story structure

I don't believe that confronting the Xanathar themselves will have a gigantic impact, but the guild is definitely involved in Mad Mage in some pretty big ways if your party get involved in the politics down there

As a player who plays in paid online games is eventually going to DM because that's the only way I'll get it in real life on my schedule, I've thought about running the two modules. After having been in dragon heist, I honestly was pretty disappointed as a player who min maxed for social encounters (I made a fierna tiefling mask of many faces genie warlock with Actor and pact of the chain). The DM really didn't seem very comfortable with my impersonating anyone. The city code also severely punishes such behavior. I was afraid to get in trouble in a game with that build. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be like that or if the DM just is passive aggressive and didn't know how to handle it and preferred to just keep me on the rails.
I'm m about to start mad mage with a similar char but less specialized for social encounters.
Do you think voice of the chain master is worth it for mad mage? I feel like the 100 feet is limiting, but if mad mage is all danger and the 100 feet is enough, would be nice to know before I go that way for this module.
