Mate, it feels good to have a new unit sitting under the hood. Don’t stress about getting the cheapest, they are cheap for a reason. Those diodes are fried and as you say, bearings and brushes are shot. Well done fella.
Doing an awesome job with the 80. Always get satisfaction when fixing or upgrading things and seeing how much better the vehicle is after you have done the work. Can’t wait to see what you have installed for your next lot of upgrades 😃
hope you've got deep pockets Patrick this is just the start of your money expenses lots more on up grades and breakages for mudding and off roading.....your doing a good job on the spanners. ....saves on mechanic repair bills and a good learning experience........on the Landcruiser 80 series ....fellow ex Landcruiser owner my self..and 4wd driver
Silicone spray everything! vonnectors guts of the alternator etc. Unfortunately itll stuff up again after a water crossing or bog hole that u cant avoid. Grab a sealed unit. Do it right do it once. Far cheaper in the long run. Excellent vid bro. Love the channel
The alternator that you took off was the original Toyota one. The pivot holes in the aluminium wore oval in mine, I have pushed in bushers to fix this problem.
I went wheeling with some friends not long after I bought my Land Rover discovery series one, they all went through massive bog holes and I decided not to. They all gave me hell because I was “too scared to get my car dirty” apparently. On the way home two cars had their alternators fail on them and I had the last laugh!
found ur channel a couple of weeks ago. 2 young blokes going 4x4ing in basic vehicles without the outlandish budgets still going to the same places n having fun, with mates. ur stickers seem to be balling along, next step has to be caps. sub as well.
it looked pretty rs, its pretty common for alts to fail after getting seriously wet.the brushes swell when wet and stick. i used to just have a spare and swap them out, the brushes do dry out. 270 instead of 500, nice 1. at least they don't have vac pumps on the back like the older ones, think they used to cost 1g.
JAS and the other FOB electricals are used by mechanics because they're cheap, and last until the liability period ends. If you're after something to deal with all the abuse, it's worth paying the extra. Do a side-by-side comparison and you'll see it's night and day in terms of build quality and materials used.
I bought the same brand alternator as a replacement for mine and it lasted a year and then I went in mud and the bearings started to be noisy and the rectifier is Corroded but I pulled it apart and replaced the bearings and it still works!
It's all a pain in the arse when shit goes wrong. But for young blokes like you lot, it's the golden opportunity to practice your diagnosis and repair skills👍👍👍 BTW, while I get merch is expensive for you guys to get into, I really don't need another sticker. If you can get a few alternatives out there, I'd be interested. I want a warm hoodie and like the Snatch camo ones...probably will get one from them, but if you offered one, too, I would get one on the days I have a spare $60-70 I'd rather not spend on beer 😉😉
Yeah, another reason why not to drive through things you do not know what is in there.. there could have been sticks or things that could have gone through your radiator also.. so think of that.. I have bent the seat slider arm inwards a little bit so that it doesn't catch on my boots. I have been looking at altrernator prices and thats a good price.. some others are $360 and most are $595 from Bursons and places like that and allfourx4, where I get most of my stuff from online they deliver in the post quite quickly but they are in Newcastle and I'm in Melb.
Now if that was a Land Rover, everyone would be screaming ‘unreliable’. Maybe you can fashion up a splash guard to deflect mud away in future. Top work anyway. Good to see you’re handy with tools. 👍🏻🙏🏽😷🦘
Well the alternator would have had to been replaced in the near future anyway, so better it happened on a local trip than if you were 100s of km from home.
Are you guys interested in going for a drive soon? I've got an LS swapped Patrol and don't live far from you. Might be fun to do a Kinglake run or something similar.
JAS owned by Burson group. Both Australian owned. , a Group supplier, 51% of the new company, with holding the remainder, the companies said in a joint statement. They said they aim to establish the company in April 2020 with a capitalization of 50 million yen ($458,968) and about 500 employees
The only thing that annoys me about your videos.. when you're talking to the camera you're looking at yourself, not the camera! lol other than that, spot on!
$270 for a new alternator is a bargain mate. Those cheaper Chinese JAS ones are normally around $350. And yes a good quality Japanese Denso and the likes are closer to $600. See how long it lasts lol I have a cheap one too. 1 year warranty. Hmm
Geez the old spinny boi was cactus.😵 AU$270 sounds like a steal for a alternator. November last year I asked for a price on a Terrain tamer alternator for a HZJ76 and the price was about AU$ 984, 66. Keep in mind this wasn't in Australia. I was looking for a upgraded alternator over the stock one.
That's the cheap Chinese version... if you look at the cable it's an adapter. The original is round socket not oval.. Ps do not overtighten the belts or they will start jumping the pully.
I think you made the right choice getting a new alternator, rather than trying to fix the old one. I also think you guys are past the age of doing stupid things in the bush, glad you used common sense and pulled the pin when you did. Look after the 80 and you'll get a lot of fun from it.
Thanks for the warning Patrick but nothings gonna stop me smashing a mud hole 😂

For my 1HDT 80 I replaced with a 120amp Terrain Tamer on and I paid $320 direct off their website. It was delivered that same day as well.
Lovin the builds lately guys. Can’t click fast enough. Much love from a fellow Aussie 👊
Thanks Mate!! really means alot you saying that! cheers :)
The inner bit where the brushes run against is called a slip ring

Awsome job, did you need to extend the diff breathers for the trip?
That's why I always put a bit of dielectric grease on or in my major electrical component connections. Really can save you some headaches.
Yet another great video can’t wait till you guys hit the tracks again👍👍
Thanks mate :)

Dude, Discovery 1 got high mounted Alternator... its bassicale free from that issues :P I own one so i knew.
Great work doing this by yourself and looking at the alternator properly before buying a new one straight up, great video

Quick fix! Nice to see the repair video sooner than later

Do these guys a favour, watch a few ads and don’t click skip 👌🏻👌🏻
Oh what a feeling
"Empty pockets"
Have fun
😂😂😅😅
Great little show guys! Keep'em coming.

I'm rebuilding my factory Toyota alternator these holidays and keep it as a spare. I just can't bring myself to throw it out. Thank you for this video
The old paj is sitting there lonely wanting to thrash the mud holes hahaha loving this build though 🙌

That alternator will be fine! Another awesome episode guys
Another great video. Keep them coming, I look forward to watching them when the come out.
Patrick, you can add one more battery onto your hdj81 land cruiser.
Only alternator damage! Not bad, I see every BMW stopped after went through deep water ! Computa must have fried! Better cars without PC inside!
I’m glad it’s not just my boots that get caught on the seat
Great show. Very bad place for alternator positioning.
Have you got plans to fit a winch? Would you of gone a 140amp alternator?
Very informative, thank you for posting.
No worries! thanks for watching!

but that Toyota is a 20 year old car
right on bud, good job.

Great stuff mate...
Keep up the good work...

Patrol always save the day. Can you rig something like splash guard around the bottom of the alternator ?
Awesome video mate was waiting for another update on the 80
was the alternator making like a ticking rattling sound when you were away ?
Thanks mate, that was very helpful for me..
Mate, do you have a snorkel on the 80? id advise getting one for future mud holes!
You brought a lemon mate lol. Should of stuck with the Paj ;)
U can also take it out of the bottom......good if youve got a second battery in that corner anyway
I didn't realize how low the alternator was in 80 is there a relocation bracket you can get to bring it up higher ?
Also if you have no charge your 80 will still run it just won’t charge the battery
so cute in the high vis
Should of got a patrol 😂 nice rig mate Keep up the great videos
great video fellas. Love ya content. 👍🍺🇦🇺❤
Thanks Mate!!
My 1hdt used to do this just hit the alternator with a hammer and she'd come good 🤙
It's an 80series they love the mud you just weren't driving it hard enough
I'm glad the 80 is back up and running, hopefully the toyota isn't like an it's a bit shitty and when you fix 1 thing you'll break 2 others
Where are the Denso units made?
That is fine, you are young and have plenty of time to learn.
I love this channel. I hate mud with a passion! hahah hope it all went well, starting video now :D
Stupidest place to mount alternator in 4wd... :P Relocate it or replace to fully sealed one with water cooling.
The only thing that annoys me about your videos.. when you're talking to the camera you're looking at yourself, not the camera! lol other than that, spot on!

good stuff boys keep it up
Lot to say for people who say you’ve gotta pay to play. Well done mate! Knock on wood and look after the old girl.👍
Thanks rich!
The best way to deal with Mud is to watch other people enjoy themselves especially when you drive past them afterwards!
Now you need to go back to the same mudhole and try again.... it's only $200-300 bucks entry fee each time :)
Another great video 👍🏽!!!!!!!
Looks like it needed to be replaced pretty soon anyway. Thanks for the vid.
You have complicated it a lot. Simply take FR wheel off and have it done in 30min sitting :D
You wouldn'tve had this issue in the Paj!
Liam lent you the keys! Not the bloody car!! There is also a sealed alternator (water cooled) for them...expensive I bet.
Could’ve rebuilt it, easy fix, but just check the diodes before you put it back in
Great video lads
Geez the old spinny boi was cactus.😵

Good stuff👍
Gotta go for another 4wd trip to redeem the 80
I have done about 30 of them over the years them and starter motors if this is a big deal for you better stick to the black stuff
great video boys.
Thanks Hamish! really appreciate it ! :)
where is dans GQ ?
Eltham bursons?
The Patrol steering box needs adjusting - way too much freeplay.
That's the cheap Chinese version... if you look at the cable it's an adapter. The original is round socket not oval..
Ps do not overtighten the belts or they will start jumping the pully.
Liam's Nissan = Toyota Recovery Vehicle..👊
If it has 4 wheels or tits it costs money mate!
Nah brah u just send it and pray lol
HAHAHAHAHHAHA just got up to the boot part, that would piss me off so bad
Starter will probably next.
i love the videos but having an ad every minute is a bit excessive
5 min in and kinda put off with the amount of ads
Problem with ya muffler is most lightly the bearing bro, common problem on these
Video title: Why you don’t mow your lawn with a lawn mower!!
Gone thru 2 ac compressors and 2 alternators in my 11 years of ownership of my gu patrol. Not worth the expense if u can avoid it.
Where's James at?
$270 for an alt is cheeeeeeeep
Even the jas ones are 500 for what I normally work on
I beat you to the video logan haha
seems like your muffler bearings are on the way out.
I think you made the right choice getting a new alternator, rather than trying to fix the old one. I also think you guys are past the age of doing stupid things in the bush, glad you used common sense and pulled the pin when you did. Look after the 80 and you'll get a lot of fun from it.
early as this time
Most Jas alternators are rebranded denso/Bosch gear. OEX are the real shit ones
Should of brought a patrol mate 😉
😂🤫🤫
@@AussieArvos ahahaha when you going 4wding again mate
If lessons were cheap and easy.... than we probably wouldn't learn anything from them. Unfortunately 😅
There was 4 adverts in this 10 minute video. Was a tad bit much
The are fun until the bills piling up
