I spent my late teens and early twenties listening to Natalie Merchant and the 10,000 Maniacs. Now, having just entered in my 50's, I still love her music. I had the opportunity to see her perform in person in 1993 while I was a student at the University of Rhode Island. Her voice, her intellect, her passion for music was, and is, intoxicating. I hope to see her perform again. My thanks to her for sharing her gift with us, the public/her fans. Thank you Natalie Merchant.

Wonderful and from my favourite album of all time. Every song is a story that beautifully unfolds. They are gifts and are just perfect.

For me this song and Natalie Merchant are part of my history. On the evening of Thursday 9th November, 1989 I saw 10,000 Maniacs play at the Wolverhampton (England) Civic Hall . Around 1030 pm Natalie announced "that this was a momentous evening" . I said "what does she mean ", and the person next to me said "the Berlin Wall has fallen" I went home and watched the amazing scenes from Berlin on my TV .
That gig was magical featuring mostly songs from what I consider Natalie's (and the band of course) greatest album "in my tribe" . Verdi cries is the final track on that coruscating album , and it was the final encore that magical evening.
That gig was one of my all time favourites . The support band The Indigo Girls were almost as good as 10,000 Maniacs and also played killer tracks like "kid fears"

It was an event I think that caught much of the world off guard...in a good way.

All those lucky souls in attendance got to see Natalie Merchant perform at Greek Theater that night. I wish I could've been there.

The great care and intention with which she performs this classic favorite...
I live within walking distance to this theatre and I am so, so sad I missed this. It's my favorite song of hers. Tears pouring down my cheeks as I listen to it now...
Thank you so much @West Coast Wally for posting this~

Her inner beauty is on full display here. I love the audience member who is so moved to achingly say, “Uh!” after “The man in 119”. And Natalie’s grace here, the strings, the piano, the band, and the impression that summer made on her to write this perfect song, she has made me want to be The Man in 119.

i own Tigerlilly on cassette, Retrospective, & her modern Tigerlilly sessions on cd. her voice remains timeless and her grayness only accentuates her beauty.

Natalie is one of the most powerful women on this planet earth. I have named my precious daughter, my princess, my blood Natalie Anne in her honor. (Her Japanese name is Himari). If and when the day ever arrives I am lucky enough to meet her a 5th time and have her sign the birth certificate I WILL JUST DIE!!!! Yep, that is her and I April 8, 1999 shaking hands after I presented her a full bouquet of a dozen steel roses I made for her. My son was born 11 years to that very day in 2010. Natalie Anne Merchant for life! Oh yeah, she signed my NAM4LYF and MAANIAC license plates too!!!! Thanks so much for this video.

It's not a personal attack on you..or the artist. It tells the algorithm to not suggest it again.
It is perfectly fine...and *reasonable* that people have different tastes in music than you and I have. The sky is not falling here.
There are so many truly egregious and heinous things in this world, and preferring thrash metal or country or trance or hip hop to this gorgeous song is simply NOT one of them.

No doubt whatsoever that her greatest years (her prime) were with 10k Maniacs, when she and Robert Buck (RIP) were in it.

I mean I can't dance like she can or write like she can or sing like she can... Pretty sure everyone still loved me, just because Natalie made sure they did. I love you everyone..

Joshua, I feel the same way, beautiful tone and quality, but some of those words are hard to understand, I remember reading the lyrics w the 10,000 M albums, and saying , really? , is that what she ‘ s saying ? She does have an overbite, I don’t know if that’s her technique, or she just can’t pronounce her r’s clearly. I can’t stand what she ‘s wearing here, makes her look old, she ‘s only 55. I loved the 10,000 Maniacs !!

Please find another female artist (performing today) that has endured over 30 years of regular performances and record after record. Yet, you wish to go after her perceived flaws instead of highlighting her greatness. And Who Cares what she's wearing?

You can still go follow the 10k maniacs. Just go google it and nothing to see here, for you...

The words are on the note to the VH-1 Live in 2005 (here on TH-cam). Someone once wrote she dresses like a librarian and dances like a hippie. But so what. (Anton)

You said that on another clip from this gig. She sounds wonderful. Be grateful that she is still performing live and sounding so good. Stop judging on appearances. There are not many artists out there with her talent and those that do will have a hell of a hard time getting their music heard, particularly in the post Covid-era where lots of small music venues are unlikely to re-open.
