    I have a family of downy’s and been watching the parents bring them to the feeder. Yesterday we lost one of the male fledglings to a window strike. So sad. Thanks for talking about the window decals

      We lose so many birds to window strikes each year. So sad.

    When I lived in Northern Ohio I stepped out of the house one evening to see something I had never seen and have not since . The sky over our fields was full of Nighthawks, easily a hundred birds if not more. It was late summer or early fall and I would guess they were on the move for the season

      That is exactly what was happening. I remember being at one of my son’s soccer games years ago and seeing a flock like that on the move. Impressive sight.

    Thank you for the science! So when a bird is squiggling down in the nest they aren't just getting comfy for themselves there's a reason. I would have never known that had you not mentioned it. Thank you.

      I’m glad that helped understand them a little bit more.

      Thanks for that update. We are trying to keep up. Has it been wet this spring? Maybe more wildflowers available to them.

    Here in Northeast Ohio, I think the hummingbird decline might have to do with the cold we got that wilted many of our flowers early. We put out the feeder, and they visit. But our Hibiscus have not bloomed yet. And our honeysuckle is drawing them. They really like the Hibiscus, though.

      p.s. We always have cicadas, and we always have hummingbirds.

      Hummingbirds, rubythroats, are increasing 1.23 % per year throughout their range. Some local and regional absences are because in weather before 50°F their are in torpor. Once it warms, they leap-frog migrate north of the 40° latitude line.😅

    I had zero hummingbirds bit now that the babies are born I have never seen so many. I saw at least 20 of them today. They show up one or two at a time and come back every 10-15 minutes.

    I have about 10 hummingbird feeders and a few summers ago I would see three or four at a time. This summer it's extremely hot and I saw one today. And I saw one last week but there is a drastic decline here in Monmouth county New Jersey. I think the hummingbirds will increase in August when they migrate. I suspect they are all nesting and having babies now.

    In Wilmington, NC, we have many cicadas. U saw ine gumnungbird veing chased vy a huge hornet last week. Thats the first and last time I saw a hummingbird. We also dint have any butterfies. We always have butterflies. We webt to thr vrach yesterday on Sunday and there were si many dragonflies. I have had a bluebird best un Aoril. The vaby birds were almost ready to fledge when the mommy disappeared. U checked the vix and there was a rat sbaje un our nesting box. I was so disappointed. 😢 In the thurd week of June we had a bluebird family lay eggs. U gadnt seeb the mommy or daddyfor fiur days, si I checked the box yesterday on Sunday. It gad veen iver 21 days in incubation. Unfortunately when U ioebed the box the eggs fell out and broke open. Tge eggs were fully developed abd ready to hatch. I am devastated😢 Why have the parents abandoned the nest?

    Had a few questions about our bluebird nest, in the tree stump, but was too late. They went for a second brood, but I'm afraid the shelf mushroom (over the nest) is falling apart. Don't know if I should try to put an awning over it? Also, is it beneficial to put the meal worms close to their nest, or will that attract predators/other birds that might get too close to their nest?

      @MarksBackyardBirds  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn’t worry about an awning. She will brood them if it rains. I don’t like the mealworms too close to the nest for the reasons you stated. Mine are about 20-25 ft away.

    The eggs you buy in the supermarket. Are these eggs that were not fertilized?

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They have been fertilized but not incubated.
