I just purchased a 30x30 garage from big building direct and I was researching on insulating it and came across your video, I’ve seen guys put furring strips up and using adhesive and double sided tape and all kinds of things I would have to say I love the way you are doing this with pressure fitting. It’s clean and the table saw is giving you a nice square cut and I will be doing the same thing! Thank you for this video. You wouldn’t have to have an updated video on how your garage feels after install would you?
Reason he is doing that it to have an air gap so the metal doesn't hold moisture. If it's directly on the metal like this guy it's possible to trap moisture in and the air can't run through the seems to dry it out and over time can cause it to rust out.
On the side walls the small additional foam pieces should be at floor level. That way heat loss from the seam is less and easier to install. Instead of being on a ladder.
I used the same tape as you did on my joints and to the metal studs and it has held since 2009! Life happened and just getting around to the ceiling and was wondering how to fix it, thanks for the video!
Your method of strapping for the ceiling panels was probably easier than mine. I got rolls of the metal pipe hanger strapping for plumbing and ran long runs, front to back. As for tape, nothing stuck to mine. I tried foil tape, and it would fall off within a day. I used the "pressure fit" method as well. I'm in North Florida, and it's been hot here lately. But I'm sure it would be hotter in the garage without the insulation. I ran all my wiring with MC cables, that I ran before insulating. I would go through the siding grooves to get behind the "studs", with metal boxes every other stud around the garage. Wanted to make sure I had plenty of outlets to minimize needing extension chords. :)
We are getting ready to build a 26x40x10 steel building. What dimension size did you go with for footer and small support wall? Finished project looks really nice.
Trick with the foil tape if you get hvac all weather tape it will stick much better and if you put a strip of duct tape first it will even stick better . Or just silicone in between the joints
@@EileenK-o7d At first I used a few self tapping screws ,then fasten siding over the foam board using longerfasteners...now I just use a few squirts of liquid nail or silicone.... It holds the foamboard to the studs/post to overlay with the siding....the fasteners hold the foam board and siding....if done right you basically have a big air-tight cooler.
I really wish I could go with a regular garage door like yours. I need the roll up door if I want to install a lift. Otherwise I can't open the door when my truck is on the lift.
Thanks for making this video! I decided to go with foam board as well for my 24x31 metal building. I wasn't sure how to go about installing it in the ceiling. Do you think the way you did it provides enough air gap?
@Steveoman1964 Thanks for replying! I have been buying the 1" board from HD or Lowe's because that's all they had available without ordering bulk. I just started with the walls because I originally thought I would spray foam the ceiling but decided against it for several reasons. HD just started carrying 2" in store so I'm going to start buying a little at a time and start the ceiling..
@@Steveoman1964 How would you know if you have enough space under the board? We're getting ready to install some of this insulation in our garage. Thanks
Great vid! Im having the same size shop built and wondering if it gets cold where you are? I'm in SE Idaho and it gets down to 10 degrees to subzero with snow and ice so its cold here in the winters. Does the foam do a good job?
the radiant barrier foil works best with an air gap like he has on the ceiling with the hat channel. Allows the roof to breathe to control moisture and reflects back the heat and cold much better.
A lot of shop-vacs cant keep up with the output of the saw. Might have to check if the hose gets clogged, if not the foam gets hot and melts to everything.
When they install the bubble wrap when installing building they put the foil towards the outer panels to stop heat penetration to keep your building cooler on the inside.
@@Steveoman1964 We'll only be doing the garage ceiling, which is stick built wood. We're in a hot and cold area in Calif, so we're having an exhaust fan installed for summer heat. Do we still need the 3/4" gap on the ceiling?
I'm currently doing the same with my shop. The wall studs are 5' on center, I noticed that you are trimming your sheets to fit your studs. I'm having to cut additional stripes to fill my void as my sheeting is 4'×8'. Do they make sheeting in a 5' × 8'. If so where can they be purchased? Thanks

The tape iam using is very sticky and has lasted over one year

Sorry for the delayed reply
I have a 24 by 50 and the footer is the same , i used a 2 by 4 around the footer for the steel Never lets water in
Great cost savings. Looks good. Can you update on how the temperature inside is

If you're going to heat the space wouldn't it be better to have the foil side facing inside the garage to reflect the heat?
Hi yes you may have a point but iam thinking of the heat in the summer as well
Great video , Does the foils side need to be face to the outside ?
Depends on your weather situation
Couldn't you overlay the foam board with the sheathing on the outside of the metal studs? Working great on mine.
Still working on the ceiling
@@Steveoman1964 works on ceiling and roofs. The heat won't transfer with the metal then....
How did you secure it?

you basically have a big air-tight cooler.
Have you heard of Green Star panels?
Have , very expensive here in Ohio
Did you seal the gaps at the corners and roof eaves? How about above the roll-up garage door?
Yes using spray foam from a can in corners Thanks

That's awesome. I am not done putting it up yet. Yes iam in Ohio and it gets very cold
hello, i am looking around for a metal building, how was your experience with the building company?
Not to bad just make sure you know exactly what you want , do your research
Is this going to take care of any condensation?
This will and already has stopped any condensation
the radiant barrier foil works best with an air gap like he has on the ceiling with the hat channel. Allows the roof to breathe to control moisture and reflects back the heat and cold much better.
What thickness are you using ?
Hi 2 inch
I would hook my shop vac to the dust port on the table saw to control the mess.
Thanks I will for sure

@@jordantheallmightythat’s not even remotely close to accurate.
@@bfirefighter3 you're saying that you should never check to see if the saw gets clogged? Or that the shop vac can handle the saw output?
Why not hang the foamboard between the frame and siding....?
It's 2 in thick
@@Steveoman1964 even better.....
Wider corner trimmed...😉
So the air gap prevents condensation right? How’d you pressure fit and leave gap?
The way it's built has a ¾ in perlin and the foam board sits on that
I read the foil part goes in the inside to act as a element for heater and AC like conductor. ?
Not sure keeps the heat out aswell need to dig into it more

Does this foam board stop condition problems
Yes sir
Where did you purchase the metal straps from?
Home Depot
I just had the same type of building put up 24x35ft and am doing the same thing
Awesome and good luck
How many sheets did the 24x35 take? I would like to find some without the R-Tech branding written all over it.
where did you buy the foam? Home Depot wants $35 a sheet and goes down to $30.56 a sheet when you buy 10 or more where I live
I bought it at Home depot in Ontario Ohio other Home depot stores had different pricing Go fugue
@@Steveoman1964 I live in Washington state. I just ended up going inch and a half for $18 after bulk discount.
Looking for some that sold locally that does not have the ugly writing on the exposed (non foil) side.
Awesome good luck
how much of a tempature drop can you expect by doing this?
Iam not sure stay tuned
Have you noticed any sagging or fall down since?
Yes if it's not strapped it wants to wiggle out
Do you have to leave space behind each board if the wall was flat?
no i only left space on the roof

I would have laid them flat on a clean floor so they don't get any memory bends in them from leaning against a wall
Are you going to end up using a vapor barrier?
No i dont think so its just a barn really
I would try house wrap tape. I have some and you better put it where you want it the first time!! 🤣🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Thanks I will
I wish I could have done mine that way my roof joists or legs are 4ft 10in wide inside to inside. I have to cut ever section lol. Nice work though.
Should have gotten a couple other quotes 🥴 30x70x14 with closed cell is 4200
Not bad
Not where I live. I got a quote for 2” of closed cell foam for my 20x20x9 metal building and it was 5600!
not sure i'd trust someone with that low of a price. 5000 from multiple quotes for 24 x 35 x 9 here
The letters r upside-down lol
This wont prevent sweating !

Hi no I dont think they make it 5 foot , use tape that will stick , you'll be fine
Use Zip tape, its freahing sticky and also used for that specifically.
Awesome thanks
I thought foil side faces out not against the metal
Dosen't really matter
