Store-Bought Quilt Hack #4: Reversible Casserole Carrier (In just an hour!)

  • Welcome Shiny, Crafty people! Tim Totten here with sewing projects you can do yourself!
This fun project is a little bit more advanced than my first two store-bought quilt hacks, but sometimes it's fun to step up the skill level and see what stuff we can make with a basic store-bought quilt!
Using a store-bought quilt means that for just a few dollars, you can have a customized reversible casserole cover that matches your personal style AND protects your homemade concoctions on the way to a friend's home!
To make this fun reversible casserole carrier, you'll need the following:
1 Store-bought quilt (I used a king-size Walmart quilt that cost $29.95 and this is the second project we're getting out of it!)
    Scissors or rotary cutter
    Straight edge or cutting grid
Binding (from the quilt or store-bought)
Wooden Dowels (12" from Dollar General craft section worked for me!)
    Thread
    Velcro
    Iron
Fabric turning device like "That Purple Thang" or a blunt chopstick
    Sewing Machine
I had a lot of fun creating this design and even won FIRST IN CLASS at the county fair for home sewing!

I love the idea of using a store-bought quilt for these projects. Often there are coordinating collections in the storesso everything would go together. Much quicker than quilting it yourself!

I'm thinking that a large bag from that fabric with the dowel handles would make a great mobile home for crafting / sewing / knitting supplies. Would love instructions for something like that!

I found you during masks making, but just found this group of tutorials! The way you explain your thought of how and why you use the different tools or way to do things is very good! Thank you for the zoom outs and "well I need 4" for my hand"

Great tutorial! I craft a lot of small stuff from garage sale buys. Whenever I look at something, I see what it can be, not what it is. Such fun. Love the colors of the quilt.

I am making these for Christmas gifts. 1/2 inch double fold bias tape in a coordinating color made finishing the edges easy! I just used some of the leftover bias tape to cover the raw edge where the dowels. Thanks for the great tutorial!

Absolutely love this idea. You can use those skinny leftover pieces to make travel Kleenex holders.
Many years ago I used a cotton mattress cover as my batting for some baby projects.

A few bowl cozies would be nice to have from remnants of that quilt. So many cozies are a little small, so this would give you the opportunity to make them to fit your soup/cereal bowls.

    • @timothytotten9409
      @timothytotten9409  ปีที่แล้ว

That’s a great idea! I just want to be careful because inexpensive quilts tend to be made with polyester batting which is not very resistant to high heat. I’d need to make sure that whoever used it didn’t overheat their soup bowl and melt the batting! Lol

I would make the piece with the dowel wider so the casserole is completely covered and also strings or Velcro to hold the flaps secured. Love the idea. I bought a quilt but it was too pretty to cut so I used it on my bed

Great idea recycling the binding. Your method is VERY time consuming. Use a ripper with a ball on the short hook. Slide that ball on the inside and firmly hold the lower edge while you push it along. Done correctly it goes very quickly.

I am loving your store bought quilt hacks. I have tried and tried multiple times to free motion quilt...and let's just say it's not my forte'. Thank you for taking the time to explain things! Do you think this can be made out of a single cut piece of quilted bedding instead of two single pieces? I think it would look nice with the corners enclosed. I hope I am making sense!!
