one important lesson I've learned while doing it, is do not apply pressure. let the jigsaw move freely and slowly or else you'll get a non-perpendicular cut
I just learned that lesson the other night. One video I was watching said..." apply pressure " to the jigsaw. NO -- not good advice. I found that if applied just slight pressure or none,...just enough to keep the jigsaw against the guide board, and no more, it gave me the best cut. I totally agree with your post.
My landlord only allow us to use a drill and a jigsaw in our apartment, and here's me wanting so badly to get into woodworking. This video just solved the last problem i had to effectively start making things. I can now begin planing out my new workshop. I can't thank you enough for this.
Under 5mins, straight to the point... well appreciated. Thank you! I’m deciding on buying a jigsaw for DIY work, but I also planning on doing some cupboards myself.
I know this video is old but I am glad I found this. I only have a jigsaw and I am a complete beginner in woodworking so this definitely helps! Excited to start on my new project!
I just got into woodworking d/t COVID-19 and did not have a circular saw. Father-in-law gave my husband a bunch of tools a couple of years ago. We bought a miter saw but I can't rip plywood. I'm very excited to learns these tips and tricks! HomeDepot is great but sometimes their cuts are a lil off.
Thank you so much for this video!! I even replayed and paused to write things down because I'm making a pantry and while I have a circular saw, It's heavy and I'm a small woman and am afraid of it lol. This just alleviated my fear and now I can make my own straight cuts without worry! You totally rock!!
OMG! So glad I just found you! We're getting new carpeting in our older home that we've been steadily upgrading through the year's and we have 6 door's we have to trim. 3 of them are brand new Jeld-Wen hollow core door's that I just painted and we installed and when I heard the word's 'you have to cut them',...I thought I'd be sick lol! I just called my husband telling him I watched your video and we can totally do this and he's even going to buy a new saw etc just so we have no issue's at all so, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! I'm going to get my saw horse's now lol!!!!!!!
As others have mentioned, this content is epic! This was an excellent, direct, and helpful video. The tips are logical and have resulted in my cuts being much more accurate.
Very nice directions. Whenever I use a jigsaw and ruler to support one side of jigsaw foot, or a guide supporting both sides of jigsaw foot, I get inuppropriate results, the blade goes under angle. To summarize the video, using thick, wide (and sharp) blade, in one continuous pass (with moderate or weaker pressure) might be the winning combination. Still for long cuts always circular saw with guide jig, or table saw are proper tools. Very good video, thanks.
Thanks for this! I'm new diy wood projects and I'm intimated by circular saws so I got the jig for plywood and longer cuts. I needed a way to cut straight though and struggled ! This will help a bunch!
I made it !, I made it! thanks to you! I really made it! it was a straight cut !!! Regards from Mexico and thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge !! Bless you !
Hey man, I'm really glad you created this video. Thanks for your reply on your other video about circular saw.I haven't gave up on my jigsaw yet (though I spent ungodly amount of time looking at circ saw vids and how to use it). Months ago I bought a set of extra clean wood cut from Bosch and there's a big difference with the cut quality. I plan to use the factory edge of my once I purchase another playboard to act as straight edge for future jigsaw cuts. Finally, your way of getting the guide measurement is fantastic, thanks for the heads up. As always, appreciate your time and be well!
Excellent tips. Wish I had come across your vid before I finished my kitchen project. I have got a last piece of wood panel to sort, this will work magic. Thanks again. Great tip👍
Thanks. Good video. Please could you explain how I could cut a small wooden log in straight thin pieces to make wooden coasters? My jigsaw guide line is too far away from the blade. Thanks on advance
Brilliant video! It seems almost no one talks about cutting a straight line with a jigsaw. I have relied on my jigsaw for a long time for just about everything that needed to be cut because it’s not an intimidating power tool. I was afraid to use a circular saw but recently I got the mini circular saw from Dewalt and I love it. Now I’m always looking for things to saw 🤣 PS, new sub 🙂
Practically, I only have a jigsaw (and sabre saw) to make a long straight cut. Well, I am just a beginner, and was struggling to with a straight cut. I have learnt some good info, I'll try this next time.
If the errors show up in beginning and end, then along with adding extra length on the guide, use a board that is longer than needed and then time to size after the cut, getting rid of the beginning and end inch or so.
Nice and easy to understand tips! Do you also have a tip how to prevent the tilt of the blade? I think this happened in my projects due to the wrong blade (to flexible) or some harder pieces of wood in my work piece. I've also seen some video's about creating a track saw kind of solution for these kind of problems, but maybe there's just a simple trick how to prevent this behavior instead of creating al kinds of cutting stations.
Training Hands Academy Thanks! One last question. Sometimes my jigsaw is trying to move away from the guiding fence. Would applying a tiny bit of pressure towards the fence, in combination with a better saw, also help or are there any downsides when using this technique?
Yes, the jigsaw does sometimes pull away from the edge guide, so resisting that with a little force towards the guide is exactly right. You may also want to try setting the guide up on the other side of the jigsaw. Jigsaws sometimes like to pull to one side more than the other, so if you switch sides, the saw might pull itself towards the guide more fixing that problem. Try it out and see what happens. Hope that helps Arnout.
You are pushing the cut too hard. In theory (and with a nice sharp blade) you need little pressure - just enough to keep the blade in contact with the material in the direction you are cutting... the machine will sort of get "pulled along" - arguably the greater pressure should be in keeping the sole plate flat. Hope that makes sense.
Cutting a sink hole into a laminated table, what saw will do the job? The table has some bracing boards underneath, and I don't see any way to clamp a straight edge board. Afraid if cutting it with a jigsaw, may warp and break the saw?
I would have to see what you are doing exactly to give you a good answer... thinking jig saw is what's best. You can send me photos on IG. instagram.com/traininghandsacademy/
Does the watts of the circular saw need to be higher depending on the type of wood you are cutting? Similar to the angle grinder when cutting through stone?
agree 100%, except when you've chosen a wrong or blunt blade and it starts heating and smoking during the cut, you just have to abandon ship (and probably the ruined workpiece as well).
Thank you for the very nice video! I tried the trick and it works quite well but sometimes the measures are not perfect so even if you go in a straight line it is not perfectly straight and it is diagonal (imagine that you measured 4.1 cm on one side and you end up measuring 4.2 on the other one so you have a 0.1 cm error that makes your line not straight). Is there any tool that can help me in achieving 100% straight lines? Thanks :)
Yes, a table saw or if you can't afford that, a circular saw with a guide. This video show techniques for the circular saw and guides. th-cam.com/video/ILVCdEOhYBc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video. I have 2 quick-clamps as tight as I can in the same place as you but almost immediately after starting my cut the guide moves; any way to prevent that?
Hey Ryan! Yes, that is very common. Try putting less pressure against the clamp as you're cutting, and if you need to, use stronger clamps. Let me know how that goes.
Hello! A little downward pressure, but most of the pressure is against the guide. If your saw wants to pull away from the blade, try using it on the other side of the guide. Some saws like to pull to one side or the other.
