    The first layer of fiberglass gets laminated on the inside of the hull and slowly it's starting to transform.
    We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on TH-cam. While we are still sailing, our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

    Based on my experience in boat building, I highly, highly recommend you prime all the cedar and let it fully dry before you fiberglass to it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen bulkheads sprung from the glass when they came under stress that would not have happened had the wood been primed with epoxy or resin. It’s not that much more work to prime everything and then you will have absolute peace of mind. Just my two cents.

    • @LG-ct8tw
      @LG-ct8tw 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

      Agree. the unsaturated cedar will soak epoxy from the first layer of fiberglass living a dry Wood to fiber interface. There is no need to wait for full cure, just roll it on wait for 10 ,15 minutes re-wet dried up areas, and proceed with lamination.

      I absolutely agree with your assessment it will pull the epoxy out of the fiberglass leaving a weak bond.

    • @pinnacle1717
      @pinnacle1717 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Have to agree with all these comments. Definitely worthwhile to fully prime the timber before the first fibreglass layer.
      It’s the first & fundamental bonding between the 2 very different materials & will be structurally superior. Much less chance of separation.
      Only a few hours extra work, you’d be mad not to do it. You will never get a 2nd chance to do it.
      Also want to acknowledge the incredible craftsmanship & care you are both taking with your beautiful project.

    Have you considered using carbon fiber for your chainplates. Instead of relying on bolts to hold the rig, the chainplates are bonded to the fiberglass...all the cools kids are doing that now! Amazing work on the boar, great progress!

    The build is looking really good and very interesting to watch 👍
    As Johan mentioned in the video (just highlighting here for any others who might have missed it).
    Regarding temperature I would be careful of laminating when you have a steep rising temperature curve. This can cause air in the wood to expand out leaving air bubbles in the laminate (I believe sailing UMA may have had this issue a couple of videos ago with some of their laminations).
    For DIY projects (when having a large temperature curve) I would try and arrange the work, where possible, such that the lamination can be done in the afternoon/evening (falling temps) and prep work in the morning (As Johan is doing)
    Where a whole day of lamination is needed for the bigger jobs I would try to wet out/seal of the wood the previous afternoon first to reduce any air being pushed out during lamination, this also allows the contraction of any air to suck in the resin deeper into the wood. (I think of this as the poor mans vacuum bag 😄)

    Fantastic build and lovely channel. Thank you for sharing!
    With the steel keel, if you go with two rudders on skegs, you wouldn't have to worry about anchoring too shallow and could dry out on low tides to work on the hull.

    Love you guys.
    Jag skulle gärna vilja komma och hjälpa er en två dagar. Jag är båtbyggar och fiberglass tekniker men har inte jobbat med det i över 20 år nu. Men har min kunskap kvar🤗
    Jag verkligen gillar ert arbete och älskar er vilja och energi att göra det ni gör.
    Jag mina bröder och min pabba byggde ihop en segelbåt för många år sedan. Det tog oss 8 år att få den som vi ville🙂
    Ett hobby projekt. Jag jobbade med båten hela tiden alla dagar med ändringar och skador men vår båt är av stål och byggd på Brus Roberts ritning 38 foot som vi ändrade lite å och gjorde till var vi ville. Den slutade som 40 foot kostum build segelbåt🙂
    Dess värre har båten stått på land på Island sedan jag flyttade därifrån för 22 år sedan😭
    Saknar båten mycket och vill ha den hitt men det kostar såklart så jag har en till en liten 21 foot Dufour från 70 en fantastisk segelbåt här i Stockholm ute på Muskö hållet i en liten hamn som heter Holmbru båthamn.
    Det här er en igen uppfattning om mig🙂 jag är 63 år och älskar båtlivet som ni och därför och rör min uppskattning av är vill jag gärna komma och lägga mitt till för att utveckla er dröm.

    Johan To assist you in your temperture humidity issue ..Your haul is basically a bowl ..If you tarp off the stern/ block it off
    You can place a portable free standing Air conditioner in the haul....Cold air is heavy and you will create a layer of cool dry air in the hual area ...the more you cover the area on top the better the environment for glassing ..You do not need to seal the haul off just a bit
    Give it a try you will speed up the process....
    considerably ...
    Here is a sample unit to look up This will dehum as well as cool down the area...

    I am wondering if keel through holes should be hardpoint locations that can be bored now and sealed with chopped random fiber mat over the end grain. I think you can buy formed carbon tube, the right diameters would make it possible to bond a length to the bores and trim the height later after the interior hull laminations.
