@@GeistView thank you! By headwind do you mean the wind facing at the drone? And by tailwind you mean so im faster on the way back? Sorry I'm super new to flying
Firstly, I wish the state or county would paint the whole exterior again. Then replace the windows that are missing. It would be a great homage to our history if that light was restored and ran by volunteer lightkeepers.
I have a mavic pro and I'm taking it there next week but you must have a much stronger and bigger one to have that much time doing video. Unless you did this by going back and forth and recharging. Great job!
These were taken with my Phantom 3Pro launched from Ecola Point. It's about 4min one way from Ecola park. The best launch point is from the Tillamook head trail from Indian Head beach. Go up the trail, don't use the 1st opening you see the lighthouse from (over the cables). Keep going about 100' farther up and there will me a larger opening. When you fly back be aware the wind hits the cliff face and shoots upwards, it will make the drone dance a little bit (hand catch is the safest). There are eagles in the area but never had a problem. If there are lots of birds over the rock keep your distance and don't disturb them same with the seals. I mostly fly out there with my P4P (my later Tilly video's) and get about 10min over the rock if launched from the trail. From Ecola, it's pretty much you get there its time to RTH. Fly out with a head wind. That way you have a tail to push you back.
If you have time to answer...In July I hope to fly out to the Light with a P4P for some video, but mostly still photography. Do you know of any restrictions in summer months due to birds? I am thinking of launching from Indian Beach--your recommendation? Also in what mode did you travel outbound and inbound? P or faster? There always birds out there. Just worse in the summer. If you are disturbing them you are too close. I don't fly from Indian Beach, I launch and land from the Tillamook head trail. As you walk up the trail you will see a small little notch where you "could" launch from but leaves very little for error. Keep waking you will come across a nice open spot just off the trail. The wind is mostly a cross wind as you pass half mile rock. If you do fly in a wind make sure its a head wind heading out, that way you get a push coming back. Launching from Ecola takes 4+ min just to get there. And you get maybe 5-6 min over the rock. From the place I suggested above it takes about 2+ min to get there and you have about 10-15 min over the rock (wind at the rock pending). Sorry for the late reply, if the wind is calm I can get about 10 min hover time at the rock. I head back when the system tells me its time to return (the drone calculates how much power to get there and how much it takes to make it home). I normally land with about 27/29% battery remaining.
Geist View Thank you. I'm considering doing this in April. My only fear is a headwind on the way back that the app won't calculate for, but will probably use sport mode on the way back. 10 min helps and will help me factor in stuff. I also have a P4P with a high capacity.
TheBlur81 I fly with just a slight headwind (just barley moves the grass) on the way out so I have a headwind on the way back. When you get to the rock, hover and check the level to see if it's windy at the rock. Have a plan before you fly out of what you want to record when you get there. If you get close use tripod mode. I use tap fly on the outbound and RTH back. Watch out for birds in April.
Geist View Thank you so much for the info. I definitely won't fly if there's any wind and always scared of birds... Your flying skills are second to none!
TheBlur81 Run your first battery out to get a sense of the wind and conditions at the rock. That way you have a general idea of what you are dealing with. Also gives you a idea of how many birds are in the area. I do all my flights out to the rock in Dec/Jan so no risk of disturbing a colony of birds. You can also do a launch from Tillamook head. There are several points on the trail where you can do a launch from. Just be aware of trees and you might need to do a hand launch or landing. You will have all kinds of hover time from the headland. Ecola takes about 5 minutes to get to the rock. If the wind is down be carefully of the ocean. Especially in the gap to the left (south) the waves will shoot up high from there. You will also need to wipe down your lens during battery swap because of the spray/ mist. The front door has a wind tunnel effect just be aware. Also if you are in front of the front door be aware there is part of the old railing right behind the drone. Don't back up without going up first. If you go behind the tower be aware you will loose signal. I had my RTH altitude set to 100 meters to be safe. You will have people come watch the screen. It can be a hassle. Especially if you are trying to do something and they want to see something else. If near the structure like I get make sure you are on tripod mode. So you get full 360 Protection and slows down the drone. There is a slight delay just be aware.
Tx for the Video - wonderful pictures of the remains. And yeah, sad to see the state of it now. I count FIVE possible oil tanks removed, plus a large tank (Water?) 3/4 buried remaining. Few chances for supplies, or to come & go, prepared for a LONG time without support.
Roger Voss Correct, the large tank to the North was for fresh water. The other (removed) tanks were for the fuel (fuel oil/ diesel) to power the generators.
Roger Voss Correct, the large tank to the North was for fresh water. The other (removed) tanks were for the fuel (fuel oil/ diesel) to power the generators.
The old pictures included really were useful for perspective on life there, from the trolley to save walking ALL the stairs to the lens to the hoist in use for supplies. Helped visualize what it was like when operating. Between the size and the remoteness, do you know if it was staffed by more than the single family common for smaller ones? Dad & kid on the trolley was a great pic. I was amazed at the flying, getting the entrance sign close enough to read in particular.

Roger Voss
Correct, the large tank to the North was for fresh water.

Did anyone else feel like something was going to come out of that dark doorway? :)
i read about it, this place is haunted by people whom pass away in the light house
If we can get permission, we'd love to take a few stills off this and publish the photos in Lighthouse Digest. Please e-mail us at Editor@LighthouseDigest.com
Tim Harrison Thank you for the consideration. Will be emailing today.
It can be yours for a mere $6.5 million according to Oregon Live!
Me and the owner are friends on FB
The concrete is deteriorating badly-looks like they mixed it with seawater. this thing will collapse soon.
Was not built with concrete. All the stone work came from a site near Portland Oregon.
Hi, my name is Jennifer from Koin 6 news. I am wondering if we could use some of your video of the lighthouse in a story on Tillie? We would courtesy you or your page in the video if that is something you are open to. You can email me at jennifer.dowling@koin.com to connect. Thanks for the nice views.
Jennifer Dowling Sure, I will be emailing you today.
I'm gonna need about tree-fiddy.
I just can't believe they were able to build this with how high those waves reach... now all it's good for is eroding more chemicals into our seawater, huh.
Bianca Aletti - What chemicals? It is just stone and iron, mostly. It isn’t toxic waste.
Has anyone ever attempted to try to walk this on foot ?
Thiz Person
Walk? Its on a rock sourounded by the Pacific.
Geist View yes, lol i see that. I meant has anyone tried walking on this rock. Take a boat and get off to walk on it

The lighthouse its self is private property. The rock it sits on is a bird sanctuary that is off limits to people.
Oh wow. Well thanks for the info !
Thanx for not putting music into this video. At the end of the day you're forcing somthing on someone when you do.
"Forcing" LOL!
If I don't put music in a video because sombody don't like music then they are forcing me, right?
But its cool...... there is that thing called 'mute'.
On a side note. Please remove all the music in your video's. I don't like being forced to watch video's with music. It's offensive.
Really cool! Such a fascinating place. Many yrs ago when I first got the then new Mavic, I thought about flying out there, but was sure I'd run out of power and lose my new investment. It looks like you had a lot of loiter time to really check things out. I had been building analog FPV race drones and was so used to the short ranges and flight times. th-cam.com/video/vvOkS9Jm36Y/w-d-xo.html
If you fly, fly from Tillamook Head overlook (take the trail south up from Indian Head beach. From Ecola Park it's over 2 miles one way.
Fly out with a headwind that way you have a tail on return. Be cautious of the seals and birds. Best time to fly is when there are no birds on Tilly nesting.
What a lovely lighthouse have always had a fascination with them, what a shame no one made an effort to keep up the maintenance on this one...looks creepy but with a bit of a fix up would look awesum....and hovercrafts could poss go up on the rock face down the bottom, doesn't look that crazy, gud old drone...
