He deserves to be there, but this is more about fit then it is about how good or deserving he is. Screen navigation and perimeter footspeed is basically the one weakness that team USA has with Jrue Holiday being the exception. Derrick White helps deal with that. Jaylen Brown is more of a strong ball pressure switch defender so they might have chosen White over him for that reason. Also Derrick White is more of a professional role player that doesn't need the ball, can hit spot up threes and an amazing rate, set screens, while also not needing the ball much. So it makes sense as a fit for the team

100. I just don’t like that he didn’t give d white props before wondering why he wasn’t selected too. Just opened up narratives that don’t need to be there. Reminds me of when JT had a workout with KD during the JB/KD trade rumors…. He absolutely should be pissed. They got 3 of his teammates on there when he won fmvp and ecfmvp. Not to mention that his whole career he has been disrespected and always living in tatums shadow even though he has arguably been better. The argument about filling a role to pick white would make sense if they picked him at the start but they replaced a stat in kawhi who is a forward and does different things with a guard when you have jaylen who is the same player as kawhi if not better sitting there and won fmvp. Its all good, this is just gonna make him even hungrier to get another fmvp next year. Keep the hate coming.

As a Jazz fan I felt like we were trying to covey the pick for the 2024 draft till the deadline. I was very disappointed that we pulled the plug mid season. Pulling in collins was a huge mistake. He is a fine player but is he in any version of the long term plan? No way! It hurt both Kessler and Hendricks development. 3 years into this rebuild and I don’t feel like we are on track for anything. Pick a lane Danny!

the established media is glossing over the failure of team USA, grant hill, and nike in preparing for this obvious reputational risk when they formally selected white two days ago. is it really a coincidence the two highest profile NBA players who've called out nike for fake activism were left off the roster (one of them being the closest approximation of kawhi leonard in the league)?
maybe, but now it doesn't even matter. damage was done regardless when hill was asked about it last night and proved clearly unable to give any specific rationale for white's better fit for the team, international play, or specific trend or matchup. none. there was also no explicit dismissal of the notion that team USA sponsors have any influence on roster decisions at all. if you're the mouthpiece for team USA, that allegation should've warranted a fierce rebuttal - you're being called a pawn! funny enough, the only time he DID mention sponsors it was endearingly saying "we're proud of our sponsors". pawn behavior at the minimum. incompetent & unqualified spokesperson for team USA at worst (even nike should be upset by his failure to deflect).
this conveys incompetence on two levels: 1) hill wasn't able to grasp the obvious confusion of backfilling kawhi with white in the moment while speaking to the press as the team's mouthpiece and 2) him, team USA, and nike clearly didn't take this potential reputational risk seriously and devote any effort towards proactive planning in the event that this exact scenario transpired. it's doubly embarrassing given it's jaylen freaking brown we're talking about - a guy who WILL call you out.
the clip of woj saying white is a likely alternate a month ago is meaningless now because the issue isn't just limited to the actual selection process anymore but also how poorly the situation was managed and prepared for. now they've ensued even more doubt in the public and ticked off the league's newest household player who also happens to be extremely vocal about his beliefs. all due to hill's train wreck of a response.

There is literally no other player that can play the 3 and the 4 llol good luck, team USA now has 6 guards (curry, booker, ANT, jrue, haliburton, and white) and 3 bigs (Embiid, AD, Bam). If kd is not playing, the team only has 2 wings that can play the 3/4 and jaylen brown is one of the best wings in the NBA rn. Jaylen Brown is a better fit solely based on the position of need for Team USA. It just makes no sense to add a guard on the roster when you already have 5 guards and you only have 2 healthy small forwards on the roster. P.S. Jaylen Brown played small forward for the NBA champions this season.

This 2025 Draft class is soo loaded, even beyond Cooper Flagg. At least 5 guys from next year's class would've gone #1 overall this year if they had been eligible (even as 18-year-olds that haven't even stepped on the floor as freshmen yet). You've got Cooper Flagg giving Team USA the business, VJ Edgecombe tore it up in the Olympic qualifiers for the Bahamas, Nolan Traore from France, Ace Bailey, and Dylan Harper. That's without mentioning other guys, like Khaman Maluach from South Sudan who's a super raw talent, but a crazy athletic 7'2 center. That's why teams are going to be more willing to tank next year; there are at least 5-6 players that have star-level potential in the NBA.

This is where I disagree with most analysts. Every trade doesn’t always have to be with the thought of being a championship team. Lauri to Warriors makes them a better team and gives them a better chance with a solid young core still intact. Warriors need to make the trade
Exactly. Only one team can win every year. Sometimes it’s about adding pieces while you plan over the course of years. Maybe the player will be a future trade piece, maybe they will stay long-term. Regardless, not every team can make a trade and be a contender, that’s not realistic.

I realized how bleak the Utah Jazz's future is during that first Summer League game vs Memphis... Specifically when BOTH Walker Kessler & Kyle Filipowski failed to box out Zach Edey on that game-tying tip-in to send the game to OT. The reason they haven't traded Lauri Markkanen yet; is because him & Collin Sexton are the only players they have with any value. Seriously, they've taken 6 1st Round picks in the past 3 years and the only one that looks like a potential NBA starter is Keyonte George
If Derrick White was getting added to the team, that argument would make sense. But to REPLACE Kawhi, Jaylen Brown is pretty much the same style of player. I didn't enjoy that piece of commentary.

The Warriors dynasty started to derail after after Wiseman pick. I had a bad feeling about it, especially after he couldn't stop crying after being drafted, but most of the hardcore Warriors fans have been obsessed about getting a star center since the 90's, and I think they partially pressured management to draft him instead of LeMelo Ball (personally I wanted them to take Okongwu or trade down for him).

Cp3, Vassel, Castle, Markennan, Wemby is quite the starting 5. Still not a playoff team due to overwhelming youth. But they could probably get to 35 wins with that. Then they need to either hope Castle turns into the PG once CP3 retires or find another one.
